To take a 6yo to see RENT

She loves all musicals she's seen the live on broadway version. Would it be a total parenting fail?

As someone who took their 5 year old to Les Mis and then had her singing all the hits about prostitutes and STDs on the tube, I have to say YANBU. As long as you are happy to take her out the second she is not enjoying and is disturbing others yours fine. Unsuitable bits will go over her head anyway.

When my son was young he loved musicals. Took him to see Chicago when he was 6.

He told his teacher that he could find 'Joseph' in his Children's bible but couldn't find 'Chicago'!! She thought it was hilarious!

Sex, swearing, STD's, drug use, suicide and violence aren't appropriate for a 6 yo. Hth.

Rent is fab.
She won't get the sex, drugs and STD references,so I guess it's down to how you feel about swearing. It isn't one of my bug issues.

Also she's seen it already if you read the OP bumsex, just on film.

Maybe take her to see the new Trainspotting first - see how she gets on.

I honestly don't know. I've seen the production I assume you're talking about - the 20th Anniversary Cast - and it is not to be missed, it is absolutely fantastic, but I'm just not convinced it's right. There's a big difference between watching the live on Broadway version when she's at home and there's probably a dozen different things around to distract her and it's all a bit distanced - they don't hold back during La Vie Boheme, and there's a few things I'd be worried about a six year old repeating afterwards.

Plus she may get stuck next to someone like me who sobbed my way through it, twice

Will the theatre let you take her in? I'd imagine they've got rules in place about no under-10s, possibly even under-14s in the case of RENT.

What about seeing Wicked. I thought it was fabulous amd am hoping to take DD to see it soon.

I'd love to take her to see other shows but we are stuck in Scotland saw Wicked & Matilda this year in London. Rent is my favourite musical of all time I NEED to see it!! She'd love it theatre says nothing about age limit.

Rent really isn't suitable for a 6 year old.

If your 6 year old has already seen it surely this is a bit shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted?

I love Rent, but a show about AIDS and IV drug use probably isn't the most sensible choice for a small child, however that's a mistake you've already made, it seems.

I've been taking dd2 (and dd1) to various productions of Rent since she was around 8. She's grown up with the soundtrack always on in the car and most, if not all of the references went over her head.

She's 14 next week and we're off to see the 20th anniversary show at the weekend and can't wait. It's just a brilliant show. We will be crying, laughing and mooing!

6 feels a bit young though but that would make me a huge hypocrite because I've taken both mine from a young age.

I took DS2 to see it in December. It was fab But he is a 19 year old..albeit one with autism and LDs that make him abut 10-12 developmentally. He is obsessed with musicals and loves RENT.

But I wouldn't take a 6 yr old. Ok some of it went over his head...but I still wouldn't take a 6 yr old. Joseph, Matilda, maybe Evita or even Grease.. but no not RENT.

It says 13+ for this production on the Wales Millennium Centre site.

I hate musicals but actually enjoyed Rent. However it is for adults, just like lots of films and TV programmes scheduled for after the watershed or with appropriate ratings. Childhood is such a tiny portion of life, being an adult and all it entails can be a bit shit and in my opinion not something anyone should hurry into. Disney exists for a reason. Most sane adults hate it but parenthood is all about selfless acts. I really want to see TS2 but the reality is the last film I saw was Sing and I am unlikely to see anything that has an age rating above a 12 for several years.

Take her to Avenue Q instead.
