Is it worth even asking headteacher for time off?

My youngest son is 5 and never been on holiday. We have days out in the summer and camp out in nan's garden but he's never been away.

We simply can't afford it. DH is on disability and thibgs are always tight. Time just passes and we never seem to be able to save.

My mum has very kindly offered to pay for a holiday for us. Her friend own a caravan on a site near a popular holiday spit and has said she will pay for it (upto a limit)

Unfortunately the holiday in school holiday dates are double the limit she set so we have little option but to have time off school.

It would be our first holiday in 6 years.

We would miss 5 school days. Children are all primary age. Not SAT time.

Kids all have very good attendance and excellent school reports.

Headteacher is a bit of a stickler though.

Is it worth even asking or should I say we all have some gastrointestinal monstrosity?

Like Strictly1, we wouldn't authorise but our school/LA wouldn't fine.

Check your LA's policy - here in Hampshire they only fine if you take off 10 sessions. Each day is divided into two sessions (morning & afternoon) and is worked out by registration, so we've been unofficially advised that those with good attendance should come in on the morning & register, then be taken out about 11am for the rest of the week so that you only miss 9 sessions which leaves it up to the HT's discretion.

Your case seems more arguable due to your partner's disabilities.

Also quite a few Councils have put fining people on hold (even if it's the official policy still) while the guy from the Isle of Wight's case goes to the High Court.

Also when was your son five? He only has to legally be in school full time from the term after his fifth birthday.

We took our dc out for 7 days leading up to Christmas to go on holiday. I sent a letter in with our form telling them why we wanted to go, where we were going and who with.

DS is in year 9 but his school authorised it.
Dd is in year 6 and although it wasn't authorised we were not fined.

Hopefully yours will be accepted, so even thorough it will not be authorised you may not get fined.

I wouldn't ask as they won't authorise a term time holiday. I would let his teacher/the office know you are going though as you don't want your child to feel pressured to lie about it (and anxious if they slip up).
I doubt you'd be fined. I think most LA's have been quietly dropping the fines since that guy won his case in the supreme court.
