To not tip...?

Not sure what to do. Going to Toni and Guy for my first haircut in over two years tomorrow, it's going to cost £50 as it's with a style director stylist. Do I also then leave a tip? I'm inclined to say no as £50 is a lot for me for a haircut (but no one can cut my hair as good as her so going elsewhere is pointless) and I assume being a style director for Toni and Guy she'll already be on a decent salary so not absolutely reliant on tips....? So AIBU to not tip?

I think everyone I know tips their hairdresser, unless they're teenagers. I would definitely tip, OP.

The £50 isn't going in to the hairdresser's pocket. Most of it will be going to Toni & Guy. What the hairdresser gets of that £50 will be taxed. You would be surprised just how much tips are appreciated and relied upon by staff you really wouldn't think it of.

At my last hair app, the business owner cut my hair. She charged me £40 odd quid. I still tipped her £10 because she fit me in at short notice the week before Christmas, at the time that was completely convenient for me. She knows I moved nearly 100 miles and still use her when I get around to getting my hair cut and it's difficult to get in to her. I know that the week before Christmas is the busiest for most service industries. The reason she made an effort for me is probably partly down to the fact that I always tip her & the shampoo girl.

I offer a service and the people that tip will always get preferential treatment (i.e. if i only had one app left in the week before Xmas, the one that tips is getting it. If i have a cancellation and have a waiting list, the one that tips is getting it). Why would I give perks to someone who can't even show their appreciation with £1?

It's mean not to tip imo. And despite what people think, non-tippers are noted and won't get the same level of access/above & beyond as someone that does tip.

If the service is brilliant - over and above what you expect for the price - then consider leaving a tip. But don't tip just "because" - tips are for people who exceed your expectations and go beyond what their job requires, they should not be seen as a way to top up someone's income because the employer doesn't pay them enough. (If you're concerned that the employer doesn't pay them enough, give your business to an employer who does!)

I don't know anyone who tips a hairdresser or beautician. I tried to tip a hairdresser once because I'd read that it was absolutely the norm. She looked at me like I wasn't quite sane and said 'no, it's only £x'.

The only staff that I think it is the norm to tip are waiting staff.

Ceaser1981 · 10/02/2017 15:31

I would only tip a small local hairdresser as they charge less. It large salons i pay by card and dont tip

ImperialBlether · 10/02/2017 17:20

So you had your hair done by a stylist who didn't know what a tip was, treaclesoda?!

treaclesoda · 10/02/2017 17:34

Not that she didn't know what a tip was. I'm 100% sure she knew what a tip was. Just that she couldn't understand why I'd be trying to tip her.

treaclesoda · 10/02/2017 17:36

I got the impression she found it insulting or something Confused

RainbowsAndUnicorn · 10/02/2017 18:34

I don't tip my hairdresser, the cost is stated so I pay that just like in a supermarket or any other service. It's not like they go above and beyond their job description.

Tend to thank people that do make a difference so club leaders etc who do things for free.
