To think the GPS diagnosis of my DD is wrong?

Rightontheschnozz · 09/02/2017 20:09

So DD is 6. She came home yesterday at normal time from school. TA said she had been a bit teary (upset) as was complaining of tooth ache. Got home that transpired to be a headache. Refused calpol but lay down with cold flannel. Didn't want tea.

Got up this morning fine, bit tired, complained of a tummy ache but nothing else. Offerd calpol again n she took it.

Go collect her from school and she's really warm, lethargic and making a funny noise with her mouth. I ask her why and she says she has a funny taste. (Couldn't see tonsils to check for tonsillitis)

Call gp surgery and they get her in (my GP surgery is brilliant)

He does all checks, looks at tonsils. Has a temp of 39deg. Breathing ok. HR consistent with temp. Listens to chest and seems ok then he taps her chest and back and then says "oh, sounds like pnumonia (SP) prescribed amoxcillin and advised to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen. Keep and eye on her etc.

We get home, I dose her up with all relevant meds, she has tea and a drink. Manages most of it. Temp check before she went to bed and it's gone right down to 37.. oral temp, 35 armpit.

Now I mean, obviously the pain releif is making her feel better. But she's pretty much asymptomatic now.

AIBU to think it's surely not pneumonia? She's not got a cough or anything. The only symptom she's had is temp and headache..

She isn't in school. I took her after school as teacher said she wasn't feeling herself. Thanks for the replies. Handy to know. I've personally only had experience of chest infections.

Keep a close eye on her OP ds ended up in hospital seriously ill with pneumonia and sepsis when the day preciously he was in work and under the weather. Ds deteriorated so quickly it frightened me to death. Your dd needs fluid, rest, antibiotics and pain relief. It's a pity she will miss her last day but can't be helped.

Rightontheschnozz · 09/02/2017 21:24

I took her to docs as she sent lethargic and was complaining of a funny taste in her mouth so thought she may have tonsillitis. Since we got back home she perked right up. But I'll be keeping her home anyway n calling doc back as per request.

Well pneumonia is generally used to describe a chest in infection that can be seen on X ray, from what I can hear on listening to and tapping the chest I will often make an educated guess instead of exposing someone to radiation that's not strictly needed. If you think of it as a bad chest infection doe that make it seem clearer? The source of infection isn't always apparent from the symptoms which is where examination comes in. If she doesn't improve or gets worse go back to gp

Rightontheschnozz · 09/02/2017 21:35

Bettyspants - yes that seems much less dramatic. Thankyou. I saw another poster mention the fact that it isn't contagious? Is that correct?

OP posts:
AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 09/02/2017 21:42

It's not contagious, but is very serious - please don't send her to school tomorrow, you need to keep an eye on her because she could deteriorate extremely quickly.

Rightontheschnozz · 09/02/2017 21:45

Thankyou. No I'm definitely not sending her in to school. I've already arranged with another mum to collect her stuff for me. We are going to have a duvet day and snuggles. Well as many snuggles as my 18mo will allow us to have haha

Ah poor love.

We had the opposite, so many symptoms and fobbed off with 'it's a post nasal drip and his lungs are clear'.

Only for him to start struggling for breath and blue lighted in, X-ray showing the infection sitting clearly in husband lungs.

Hope she gets better soon.

CalorieCreditEqualsCake · 09/02/2017 21:48

In husbands lungs. 😀

In HIS lungs.

GabsAlot · 09/02/2017 22:09

sorry op misread that-hope she feels better soon

Dd1 had pneumonia at 8yo.
She did 3 performances and a swimming party over the weekend, saying nothing more than her shoulder hurt a little.
On Monday morning by 9:30 she'd been diagnosed with severe pneumonia: her stats were do bad the doctor couldn't believe she'd been able to walk up the road (5 minutes) to see him.
She was on three lots of antibiotics for a fortnight, lost a huge amount of weight (she was lighter than she had been 3 years previously) and was seeing the doctor 1-2 times daily including him often nipping in to check her at the end of surgery.

She hadn't had a cough at all until the antibiotics started to work. the doctor said to encourage her to cough to help get rid of it. She actually appeared more ill after 3-4 days of antibiotics.

Rightontheschnozz · 10/02/2017 07:19

Thankyou for all your helpful replies. She was up at midnight asking for water and went back to bed. She was starting to cough a bit then. She's still asleep now. Definite duvet day required.

My dd had pneumonia which was diagnosed after I took her to the as I could a whistle on her chest. I couldn't believe it as no other symptoms really.
He sent her to the hospital for an X-ray that evening and you could see it. I was horrified to see how bad it looked but with a lot of tlc for a week she was fine. And anti biotics.

kissmethere · 10/02/2017 08:39

Ooh a duvet day will be perfect today. Hope she gets well soon Flowers

Rightontheschnozz · 10/02/2017 09:21

Yes. Picked the perfect day to not have to go anywhere! Nice and snuggly. Quick question.. she's been invited to a birthday party which is tomorrow. We RSVPD a while ago (softplay party) if she feels fine in herself, will I be ok to take her or would it not be wise? The mum will of already paid for her place and food etc so would hate to have to turn her down, but obviously will if necessary. Her health comes first.

SilenceOfThePrams · 10/02/2017 09:32

She might well start to cough more as the antibiotics get to work - sometimes what the doctor can hear with the stethoscope is a solid lump of infection. No real coughing with that as it's just sitting there building up. So then as the meds get to work on the infection, it does break up and she'll start to cough. You can encourage her to spit it out rather than swallow (won't harm her to swallow, might make her feel sick though), and a bit of moving around, jumping, sitting up, etc. will help to loosen things up.

Watch out if she seems to be working very hard to breathe - if her nostrils flare, if there's a bit of a recess under her neck when she breathes in, also If she gets very very tired, or starts getting bluish lips or fingernails - all signs she might need a bit more help.

But hot drinks, regular meds, and plenty of cuddles should do the job nicely!

Sirzy · 10/02/2017 09:35

I wouldn't risk going to soft play while she is ill already, they can be breeding grounds and you don't want to add anything else while vilnerable.

Also from experience with me and ds you will probably find she tires easily for a while so I would get as much rest as possible rather than running around at soft play

Rightontheschnozz · 10/02/2017 09:53

Silenceoftheprams- excellent UN. Love it. Thankyou for your advice. X

Sirzy- thank you. I'll keep her away.

No party! No way!

Honestly my daughter was jumping on a trampoline and was in the high dependancy unit 6 hours later. It's extremely serious!
Please keep an eye on her, it's not something that clears up in a day or two. My daughter did not grow for one full year after she recovered.

Wishing you both all the best.

user1485984489 · 10/02/2017 10:28

I had Pneumonia a few months ago. I didn't have a cough either but severe chest pain, like someone had kicked me behind my boob (if that makes sense). Talked to GP and she said they can hear it because the lungs make a 'cracking sound' when you breathe. Had Amoxicillin too (7 days) then went back and had this extended for another week as still had chest pain. Please don't send her to school until she is better! Pneumonia is serious.

Shannith · 10/02/2017 11:38

I had pneumonia last year. Two weeks of coughing but I'm a smoker so blamed myself. Everyone else in the office had a cough, just not as jacking as mine.

Woke up and did not feel right at all. Shaking and being sick on the train.

Got into the office and within an hour had a full on temperature induced fit. Temp was 39.8.

Blue lighted to hospital and had so many iVs in at one point I lost count.

And I'm a 40 year old woman who really ought to be a bit more sensible

Keep taking to the GP. If he thinks it's pneumonia take it seriously x

honeylulu · 10/02/2017 12:05

I thought it worth saying that when I or my children have started a course of antibiotics there is often a sudden upturn in how well you feel and it's easy to think "oh I'm better now, illness is over".
But twice when I've thought this (bronchitis) and stopped the antibiotics thinking I no longer needed them I relapsed and was iller than before, within just a few hours.
She may seem "better" but she is probably still ill and recovering ams the antibiotics are doing their job.

Phillipa12 · 10/02/2017 12:46

Like a previous poster my dd was jumping on a trampoline 4 hrs before being blue lighted to hospital with pneumonia, she had no symptoms what so ever, whilst in hospital and responding well to drugs she developed sepsis, again no symptoms untill it was to late to save her life. Pneumonia is very dangerous, take care of her and lots of rest.

user1485984489 · 10/02/2017 15:28

@Shannith I was a smoker too - I used getting pneumonia as a reason to quit. Well, that and the fact I felt so ill I couldn't face a cigarette. 16 weeks off the evil cigs today! If I can do it, you can :-)

user1485984489 · 10/02/2017 15:35

@Phillipa12, that is so sad, so sorry for your loss.
