So I was in Waitroise shopping and as I have a my waitroise card can get a free tea or coffee. So I paid for my shopping and was given my cup to take to the self service machine. The queue was long so the lady on customer services told us there was another machine at the deli counter
I arrived at the deli counter and the person serving started to make the tea.
A deli counter customer arrived and she left my tea to go and serve the customer. It wasn't a quick transaction so I started to get edgy as my car park ticket was about to run out.
So she than left deli counter customer to finish off my tea. She than apologized and pointed out she had only one pair of hands. I said that she should have finished serving me as I was 1St.
So I was I be reasonable to say this or was I rude as I wasn't actually paying for the tea.

Ah but if you had bought a bottle of water you would have had to queue to pay.

I would get your tea first next time, and go to the serve yourself and make it to the required temperature and colour. Grin

Having a tea/coffee machine on the deli is a bit bonkers.

Maudlinmaud · 09/02/2017 14:14

Did she wash her hands? Shock

Catlady1976 · 09/02/2017 14:14

They normally ask if you want the tea bag left it. I normally say no but other customers who prefer a stronger brew may keep it in.
The other members of staff being other people on the deli counter when I have been previously.

Wow some people on here are horrible!! I would have said the exact thing you said. You were not rude you were honest!! At the end of the day you are a customer and you bought your shopping and are entitled to the same service as everyone else.

Had the lady at the deli counter wanted something quick then it would have been okay but once the server knew it was more than a quick transaction she should have finished your tea first!!

Catlady1976 · 09/02/2017 14:15

I meant buy a bottle of water with the rest of my shopping.

SomethingBorrowed · 09/02/2017 14:15

Good point. I might have interrupted, but I know I can be seen as rude sometimes (cultural diff maybe, I'm French, we complain a lot).

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 09/02/2017 14:16

I'm amazed this mattered so much to you to first make the comment to the member of staff, having already received your free tea at this point therefore there could be no time saved for you at this point and secondly to come and post on here still sounding, to my ears (eyes) anyway, somewhat irritated.

hearyoume · 09/02/2017 14:16

Yanbu. She was already dealing with you and should have finished. I don't even think ywbu to call her on it.

Catlady1976 · 09/02/2017 14:18

When I say edgy I meant looking at watch to check time.
Thinking about it apology was probably the wrong word. Probably more of an explanation. She did apologize to the other customer saying something like sorry I need to finish off making this tea.

OP posts:
SomethingBorrowed · 09/02/2017 14:19

everything I don't understand your point when you say "having already received your free tea at this point therefore there could be no time saved for you" if I follow the same logic, if someone stomps on my foot I shouldn't say anything because it won't make the pain go away.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2017 14:21

Oh I didn't realise you had been to the deli counter for your free drink before, I though this was the first time as the lady on customer services told you about it. I guess everyone makes a cuppa differently.

Catlady1976 · 09/02/2017 14:21

I mentioned before receiving the tea. But yes I suppose I posted because I doubted myself a bit and was interested in other people's opinions.

OP posts:
Catlady1976 · 09/02/2017 14:26

Yes sorry I should have said that the customer service lady said that the machine was extra slow today due to a maintenance issue. Hence the queue.

Waltermittythesequel · 09/02/2017 14:27

Was a free cup of tea really that important?

How much is tea? £2?

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 09/02/2017 14:31

To me, SomethingBorrowed, physical pain is somewhat different to the mild inconvenience of a couple of minutes. I realise not everyone will agree with me though, just offering my opinion.

Kiroro · 09/02/2017 14:41

She should have finished serving you first. You were not BU to call her out on it.

I thought my sister was writing this! She is THE nicest person ever and the deli counter woman at waitrse was fucking horrible to her a few weeks ago... as she was at the till the woman came over and said "my manager saw and said I have to apologies and you're to have the deli items for free". Boom.

Waitrose isn't what it is any more. A late teen/early twenties girl was taking the piss out of my (very, very slight) northern accent the other week. I only just managed to restrain myself from telling her to fuck off.

Catlady1976 · 09/02/2017 14:44

I just like to get one. As a treat with one of their yummy cookies when I visit that town. Today it felt fairly essential as I missed breakfast.
Yes I could have brought something else buy why would I when this is what I fancied and it is virtually free?

OP posts:
Catlady1976 · 09/02/2017 14:49

It weird because I normally love shopping at Waitroise not just for the free cuppa and newspapers. The staff are normally really friendly and accommodating.
The checkout lady today was lovely.

OP posts:
YouHadMeAtCake · 09/02/2017 14:52

Why should the OP choose a different drink? Deli woman was serving her first, she stopped and served someone else. That IS rude and is not on. If it happened with a free cup of tea or a paid item from the deli, regardless, you serve in order of who comes first. Some of you obviously put up with bad service happily. Hmm

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2017 14:57

I still think the deli lady was letting the tea brew.

If so she could have said 'Can I just serve this lady while your tea brews?'. Giving you the opportunity to say absolutely not you want your drink immediately.

Catlady1976 · 09/02/2017 15:03

Yes it was the wandering off without explanation that annoyed me the most.

OP posts:
Catlady1976 · 09/02/2017 15:08

I suppose I could get my tea first but I would than have to queue twice at checkouts as you have scan your card at the till to get your cup.

OP posts:
oldenoughtoknow · 09/02/2017 15:14

Can't understand all those people who queue to get a coffee in a paper cup, just because it's free.

LittlePaintBox · 09/02/2017 15:16

The way you tell it, she apologised, so it was maybe a bit ungracious to tell her off after that.

SomethingBorrowed · 09/02/2017 15:20

"Can't understand all those people who queue to get a coffee in a paper cup, just because it's free"
there are also queues at Starbucks, were a coffee in a paper cup costs you £3-5 Grin
