To keep the kids off school due to the heat? I'm in Oz.

I'm British, this is all new to me. Other parents don't seem to keep theirs off....well not in our school! Some schools close when it gets over 38 but it was 41(105!) today and I swear to God I almost passed out walking home.

I don't drive...can't drive...so we walk to and from school. it's fine in the morning but 3.00pm is the hottest part of the day and it's a mile long walk on unshaded streets.

I felt a fool today. There was no traffic at all...nobody on foot...everyone drives in air condtiioned cars and there was no sign of anyone.

I've nobody to ask for a lift...my DH is working away till Friday or he would have finished work early.

I know I can't do that walk again. I couldn't breath and towards the end, a woman came out of her house and asked me if I had far to go and was I ok...SO kind of her.

DD was hot but not that bothered by it...she's tougher than me obviously! I did drink a lot and we had hats.

Accendo as I said earlier, I can't learn to drive. I'm epileptic.

Anyway, we have to go outside to get to Bunnings on a Sunday morning. Why would we stay inside and avoid worshipping at the altar of the great sausage sizzle? Shock

PenelopeFlintstone · 09/02/2017 08:37

I live further west than Sydney and, truth be told, people are hiding inside a lot in the aircon. It's hotter than Sydney though (but less humid too so I prefer it). I reckon 37 and upwards people start to retreat.

echt · 09/02/2017 09:00

I no longer watch TV news so haven't been clocking the Au weather. Bugger, me, it's hot.

In Melbourne not so much.

OP, really ,don't keep your child out of school. I'm guessing, or haven't RTFT, that you're new to Oz. Well worth putting out feelers at school, saying you can't drive but would appreciate a lift on occasions. Difficult I know, because it implies giving out personal info but your DC should be in school.

SuperBeagle · 09/02/2017 09:03

I go outside when it's blisteringly hot. And then immediately regret it bc it's miserable and my feet are slipping around in my thongs.

But things have gotta get done, people! Like getting that Sunday morning sausage sizzle at Bunnings Wink

IAmNotAWitch · 09/02/2017 09:09

Again, LOL that we don't go outdoors for months.

Its a bit hot at the moment. We have just had summer holidays, the vast majority of days we were at the beach/at friends houses for bbqs, kids went camping (I don't camp).

We are outside a good 80% of the time we are not at work or school. I am outside right now, on the deck with an after dinner glass of icy cold verdelho and the kids are in the pool.

It's pretty rough Grin

SuperBeagle · 09/02/2017 09:22

Party at Witch's!!! Grin

TheClaws · 09/02/2017 09:35

Also, LOL at the idea that we DO go outside heaps when it's over 40c or so. I don't know anyone who does. No, sorry, I do, but she's the type to post Facebook pics of her legs and bikini-ed bottom half, lying down on the beach, as red as a lobster. It's awful going to to Bunnings as they just have those useless fans. This weekend power outages could be occurring because of the massive aircon load - from people staying inside.

Verity23 · 09/02/2017 10:11

The kids at my DS's school have been loving the 40+ days because the principal gets the hose out and sprays them all Grin.
I'm glad you found a lift OP and the school will do their best to keep the kids cool during the day.

nolongersurprised · 09/02/2017 11:01

While people definitely do go outside at this time of the year in Australia you don't see many people wandering the streets in the mid day sun. Lots of people running before the run fully rises but no one during the day. The people walking around in the heat of the day with their shirts off are usually tourists Smile

The kids are outside but usually in some form of water, as am I.

The part I hate the most relates to the humidity. I've done the dry heat option and it's the drippy, moist heat that's hideous. Plus, everything goes in the fridge, including bread and fruit and cake.

TheStoic · 09/02/2017 11:09

Love the thought of Australia only having one hill. Grin

I love getting outside in the heat on days like this, but I appreciate I'm not normal in that regard.

IAmNotAWitch · 10/02/2017 02:33

Yep, only mad dogs and English men go out in the midday sun.

I have gone to ground now. But was up and about this morning until around 11ish.

Tonight we have a party at a friends, will be hot but again kids in pool and beer is cold.

It would be really bloody stupid to go out into the sun in the middle of the day when it is 40+ degrees, but there are still lots of hours where it isn't the middle of the day.

My youngest has after school club this afternoon (I am supposed to be studying). They are having a wet sponge/hose fights and will have ice blocks. That will be from about 4pm, I expect they will keep them in for school lunch time, but maybe not because many of the play areas have deep shade provided either by trees or awnings.

We are used to the heat, life doesn't stop.

SuperBeagle · 10/02/2017 02:40

Well I'm hoping it cools down somewhat by 8pm because I'm seeing Guns N' Roses tonight and I signed up for Slash, not heatstroke.

Grin
IAmNotAWitch · 10/02/2017 02:46

OOoooh I thought about GunsnRoses, but I was so worried that they would be OLD and if they were OLD then that must mean I am OLD and I am not ready for that.

Also, am lazy.

IAmNotAWitch · 10/02/2017 02:46

Google says 31c at 8pm.

You will be fine!

SuperBeagle · 10/02/2017 03:11

Witch They look young compared to the Stones, who still smashed it when I was them a couple of years ago. ALTHOUGH Axl is looking pretty rough. Wouldn't go there, tbh.

31 degrees is... Well, thank fuck we're not braving crammed public transport is all I can say. Grin

TheDowagerCuntess · 10/02/2017 04:06

Went to GnR last week - in the wind and bloody rain! Left for the concert in boots, polo neck and puffa jacket - in feckin' February! 🙄🙄

They were great - it was an amazing night, but my God, does Axl look blousy and middle aged compared to days of old! DH missed the concert, so I had to google some 90s vs these days images. Boggling!

SuperBeagle · 10/02/2017 05:28

Dowager Yaaaasss, finally I hear a recent review (not written by some bloke in some article). Shame about the weather. It seems we can't win?!

Considering how fab he looked when they started in '87-ish, he looks farkin' shite now. I'll try to ignore that. Grin

MrsPeelyWaly · 10/02/2017 05:35

Only 41 degrees? It gets to over 50 here in Doha grin

Its the same where I live but lets face it unless it was to go from the car park into a building we really wouldn't be out walking in those temps.

Florrieboo · 10/02/2017 05:51

It's 40 degrees at 5pm here in Sydney and we have no wine or beer. I am distraught.
