DH thinks im being silly RE: Slowcooker

Ok.. Im aware this is a very small issue but I just wanted someone else's views on this. DH has bought a slow cooker and to be fair cooks amazing things in it. He usually leaves it on all day while we are at work which I don't have an issue with. However, Last night he prepared food at 10pm and planned to leave it on till 6am (when he gets up) . I didn't feel comfortable with this , I usually turn everything off before bed and also don't like the thought of us all being asleep upstairs when something's cooking downstairs. Can I have your thoughts? I may genuinely be being silly. we haven't argued about it or anything.

I'm not sure I would want to wake up to the smell of curry. I can't see any real risk apart from curdling your stomach first thing!

Can I ask....why is anything I've cooked in our slow cooker disgusting? I'm a good cook...but I tried to make a basic stew and it was watery and tasteless!

I put in what I usually put in...it was horrible. When I make a lamb stew, I like it very plain and very old fashioned but thick and so forth. I just use stock cubes with vegetables and meat...on the stove top, cooked slowly, this always thickens nicely etc.

In the slow cooker it was awful!

There's your problem. If you cook something a totally different way, you can't expect to use the same recipes. Get recipes specifically for a slow cooker.

Narky but it's so simple and the basics are the same...cooking some stuff very slowly.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 07/02/2017 12:32

But it isn't the same, as you have clearly discovered from the results you have had. If it was exactly the same you wouldn't have a problem, would you?

Coralfish · 07/02/2017 12:32

I use a timer plug on the slow cooker so it will automatically turn off after so many hours in case something happens in the day and I don't get home. Not what you were asking, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway!

I don't mind leaving things on over night as we have smoke alarms throughout the house.

I don't leave things like tumble dryers or washing machines on when we are out as we have a house cat who wouldn't be able to escape if there was a fire.

For a start you need far less water in a SC. As pp said, get a recipe specially for slow cookers. Think like this - you don't get a BBQ taste when you grill something, so why do you expect a SC meal to taste like a stove top one?

CoolCarrie · 07/02/2017 12:40

I never use the dishwasher, washing machine or tumble dryer over night, especially after the problems with the tumble dryers in the UK, but slow cookers are fine, and very handy.

Cel982 · 07/02/2017 12:45

Fluid doesn't reduce in a slow cooker, user, so you need to use much less of it, and/or use a thickening agent near the end to get a decent gravy.

OP, slow cookers are so safe that I really don't think it's any more riskier than having a radiator on overnight. Washing machines etc. are much more of a danger.

RainbowChasing · 07/02/2017 12:48

Funnily enough my dh and I had the exact same conversation a few days ago. I wanted to cook over night and he didn't like the idea. In the end I did cook overnight and it was fine, except for strong smell of chicken casserole when we got up in the morning which was odd. YANBU but neither is he.

Started the thread and immediately thought of the we trust the fridge sketch.Grin.
Nothing in this house is ever turned off. Blush.
Sky even stays on when we go on holiday. What's the point of Sky if you can't Sky+ everything.

xStefx · 07/02/2017 13:04

Yes I always get a telling off when Dh has set something to record and then ive gone and turned the sky off...

Love the Macintyre clip too :-)

If you are a light sleeper do not cook anything overnight! The smell always wakes me up (and in the case of our bread maker just makes me hungry at 4 am!)

It's about the same as leaving a low-energy lightbulb on.

You really should stop doing that then, its really disrespectful to other people in the house.
