To ask is West Hampstead in London a rough scary place to live like Tottenham?

Went to view a flat there yesterday, on the ground floor at the front of the building so at a higher risk for robberies.

The whole area just didn't feel that nice, I was expecting it to feel much nicer but it reminded me of Tottenham. Am I just jumping to conclusions? Is it a safe part of the city?

I am definitely not a snob. I am a peasant with a touch of anxiety, who values a quiet life.

I used to live v close to there. It's a nice area, though the closer you go to Finchley Road the nicer it gets.

I couldn't say for sure what it's like now but the medical centre on (or v near) Sumatra road used to be very good. Possible to get appointments and the GPs and nurses were super, super nice. That's hard to find these days!

I lived in Kilburn for 2 years and loved it. West Hampstead is posher than Kilburn! Not rough at all (by London standards). West Hampstead is where we'd go for dinner/drinks if we wanted to go a bit upmarket. There and Queens Park.

GloriousGoosebumps · 05/02/2017 17:24

Ah well if you're currently living in Hampstead then I suspect your problem with West Hampstead is that it isn't Hampstead rather than that it is rough. The problem of not being able to afford to buy in the area you rent in is frequently seen in Location Location Location and you could probably do with a lecture from Phil and Kirsty! That aside, have you looked in Belsize Park which is immediately adjacent to Hampstead?

EssentialHummus · 05/02/2017 17:29

I agree about looking in Belsize Park. Dartmouth Park (the neighbourhood adjoining Parliament Hill Fields) is also worth a shout - cheaper as it falls into a less prestigious postcode.

Tottenham

My three bed Victorian house in Tottenham costs the same as a flat where you are looking and I find it lovely and super friendly here. However, if you are of a more nervous disposition I think you should be ok in Wampstead!

wanderingsole · 05/02/2017 17:56

I'm looking in the entire surrounding area. Only renting not buying! Have to leave my current place after some years here. This area feels like home but that's the way the cookie has crumbled, so I have to embrace someplace new.

Hahahaha!

Sorry, I don't mean to be mean. West Hampstead really isn't rough, or at least no rougher than almost anywhere else in London.

I lived there for ages, honestly, it's fine.

LaurieMarlow · 05/02/2017 18:24

West Hampstead is a great compromise location for those priced out of Hampstead. Perhaps try and find somewhere that's closer to Hampstead/further away from Kilburn? Fortune green road is a good middle ground or the 'Greek roads' in and around there.

West Hampstead is just a bit livelier/more 'normal' than Hampstead. But it's still very chi chi by London standards. Lots of nice restaurants/bars, a Waitrose, a Cook, the fancy Butchers, plus easy access to the O2 in Finchley Rd is great and in any event, you're walking distance to Hampstead.

I would highly recommend it.

How about East Finchley which is very nice. Also Highgate.

tangerino · 05/02/2017 18:41

Highgate? Marginally cheaper than Hampstead and definitely not rough at all- it's lovely.

JonSnowsWhore · 05/02/2017 18:42

I'm feeling offended for my beloved Tottenham! Hi nearly neighbours on this thread Smile

JigglyTuff · 05/02/2017 18:45

If you want Hampstead Village at non-Hampstead prices, then Belsize Park (although it's not a lot cheaper), South End Green or Highgate.

You could go south or west too - Ealing, Richmond, Wimbledon, Putney, Parson's Green.

Hello Mumsnet

Would anyone be able to recommend a good reliable cleaner for the West Hampstead area? Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

I live in Tottenham in a quiet street. It is lovely.
