to ban Horrid Henry?

I have 3 sons who love watching Horrid Henry. But I hate Horrid Henry. I think he's a horrible little brat of a boy who speaks horribly to his parents, does all manner of horrible things, but always seems to come out on top. One of my kids in particular has started speaking like Horrid Henry and it drives me crazy.

WIBU to stop them watching it just because I don't like it? I know I'm the parent and it's ultimately up to me to decide what they can and can't watch, but am I over-reacting and Horrid Henry is all just harmless fun? And their TV watching usually goes in phones, they obsessively watch something for a wile then switch to something else. So should I just ride out the Horrid Henry phase? It's going to be truly Horrid in our house for a while if I get rid of it.

His parents are right wet twats. Horrible to him and nice to awful Peter. We don't watch it anymore as my then 4 DD called me a 'stupid woooooorm!' In an awful voice.

Kitsandkids · 05/02/2017 18:43

Mine weren't allowed to watch it until they were Year 3ish. Until then I thought they weren't mature enough to realise it was just a programme and he was not a boy to emulate!

They have recently started watching Power Rangers and I'm considering banning that as my youngest (just turned 8) no longer seems able to walk down the street without practising ninja kicks and 'hi-ya!' type shouts!

Stopandlook · 05/02/2017 19:05

I had to ban it for a while because my 4 year old (watched with her older sibling) shouted 'smelly nappy baby!' at another child and make them cry... Now they are older they understand it more...

StarryIllusion · 05/02/2017 19:23

Peppa Pig is banned in this house. Horrible little brat. Soon as DS started talking back like her, I banned it. YANBU in the slightest.

onceyoupop · 05/02/2017 19:46

Totally agree, when our son was into HH a few years back (around 7 or 8) also started speaking in that horribly disrespectful way, so we also banned it until he was a bit older. Same with Tracey Beaker!

AllTheLight · 05/02/2017 19:52

The thing I like about the HH books is that they promote equality between the mum and dad. Dad is equally involved in childcare (eg making packed lunches) and the doctor character is female. Few children's books do this.

missyB1 · 05/02/2017 19:53

Horrid Henry books and cartoon have been banned in our house. The books are appallingly written, the cartoon is the biggest pile of shite and anyway I cant stand the whole idea of it, one nasty brat and one spoilt brat, and crap parents.

PoundingTheStreets · 05/02/2017 19:54

onceyoupop - I did the same with Tracey Beaker. Same with most of the content offered on Nickelodeaon - horrible brattish children who shout all the time and speak to others with absolutely no respect.

I only allowed rubbish like that when I was sure my children were able to see it for what it was and not consider it cool to ape in any way.

CoolCarrie · 05/02/2017 19:58

Just William books and TV series , old and new, are brilliant and much better than HH ( which is just a badly written rip off of JW anyway)

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/02/2017 20:00

Henry is probably better than the other characters and I occasionally feel quite sorry for him. Now, Norman from Fireman Sam is a little shit and has earned the nickname Naughty Norman in our house. And he has an awful bloody voice. We ended up limiting DS's exposure to Power Rangers as he just got too hyped up and thought he was invincible. He's 6.

allowlsthinkalot · 05/02/2017 20:09

I banned HH. Making unpleasant and selfish behaviour out to be funny. Introducing the idea that school and fruit and sport are things to be ridiculed, not enjoyed.

I wasn't worried about copying. I didn't like the messages in the book. It is so far the only banned book in this house. Never seen the tv series thank goodness.

tedmundo · 05/02/2017 20:20

Both the books and tv show were banned in this house.
The dcs were banned from choosing HH books for their free reading books. There was ALWAYS something better to read.

trixymalixy · 05/02/2017 20:34

It's awful. I hid all the books much better things to read or watch.

Barbie222 · 05/02/2017 21:28

No, I never encouraged it - neither books nor TV. It's an unhealthy set up! Makes me feel uncomfortable.

Barbie222 · 05/02/2017 21:30

Quite like Peppa Pig though. The best is Bing. Flop handles everything perfectly....

Pippa12 · 05/02/2017 21:30

Banned in this house! Awful programme!

CantstandmLMs · 05/02/2017 21:31

I'm a Nanny and HH was banned for my ex charge when he was 7 or 8 (now 15!) as his behaviour and treatment of his siblings started to replicate that of Henry's. What an awful show!

Aeroflotgirl · 06/02/2017 07:59

The thing is, HH is quite aggressive and rude, mabey if he tried a bit harder to be polite and helpful his parents would be better. Peter is very sickly sweet, and is a pain in the butt, I can see how he is quite sneaky too. I much prefer Dennis the Menace.

Aeroflotgirl · 06/02/2017 08:11

Horrid Henry, is not nice for the sake of it, its if he wants something, or for his gain.

CantstandmLMs · 06/02/2017 08:12

I caught the last 15/20 mins of the horrid Henry movie on TV not long ago (was curious!) and Henry seemed really sweet! He won a game show to save his school from closure. I'm sure the rest of the film he was horrid lol.

Ram2012 · 15/11/2018 09:38

Hi All. Does Horrid Henry books contain the word hate as my child think so? Thanks
