Genuine concern here... grandmother is regisrered partially sighted and getting worse. She qualifys for a guide dog... I'm sure the particulars would be explained to her should she decide to go ahead but... who picks up its poop if the owner cannot see?! Both out and about and within the home?

I do have genuine problems in life but this one has puzzled both our simple minds

If only all dogs could be trained to poo on command - then we wouldn't have to put up with poo smears all over the pavements and grass and those horrible poo bags that get left hanging on tree branches for someone else to take away...

Ahh good point.

RTKangaMummy · 05/02/2017 16:23

Ella I am sure that all dogs could be trained in this way from a Yorkshire terrier to a spaniel to a Newfoundland Smile

I think it is just that most people can't be bothered to put in the effort and hard work when they are puppies

It really does work and makes going out much easier also makes them cleaner in the house or if you are visiting friends/relatives etc

OP if your grandmother is able to have part of her garden fenced off near her back door I am sure it will be fine SmileSmileSmile

In our new house we have a specific door that goes directly from utility room to the dog spending area

You can still get to the garden from the French doors so different area is set aside for dogs

OP if she is able to have a GD I am sure it will give her back her independence SmileSmileSmile

Good luck to her SmileSmileSmile

RTKangaMummy there's a name from the past! Well written description of the 'busy' training, I used to puppy walk to for the GDBA.

I use a similar system for potty training children, it works!

I have a Guide dog , who when working ( with harness)
Does not Poo or Pee.

But she is on a High diet which includes loads of Vegetables,
( These Frozen vegetables are perfect for topping up Labradors meals)

When we are out she does have a habit of having a Poo.
And unless my wife is out with me , I can miss seeing her as she could be on free time running free.

Yesterday while out I was out with my guide , I was berated verbally
By a member of the Public , even thou I was carrying her harness he seemed oblivious to the situation.

My guide dog loves her free time and always comes back when I blow her
Whistle.
But these situations are beyond my control
I would like to hear people’s comments on this.

A friend of mine is a dog behaviourist and taught me to teach our idiot spaniel to only poop and pee when she's told to. It sounds crazy but hand on heart it works. I think Guide Dogs are trained from when they're very young, so it's embedded very deeply.

However, as a fellow dog owner I've always got poop bags in my pockets and bags so if I saw a Guide Dog take a poop I'd do the right thing and scoop it up.

Confession. I once had a go at someone for letting their dog poo on the pavement. Of all places it was a section where roadworks narrowed the pavement. As I was behind him I didn't realise till the man turned around it was a guide dog. The harness should have been a clue to me! He didn't have a bag and nor did I, so it was left there.

Anyone who can't spot the guide dog harness , on the dog or being carried, should consider if they need their own dog.

And sighted dog owners who don't pick up or leave bags hanging in trees - you deserve it rubbed in your hair. You had a choice about getting a dog and owning a dog means 15 years of picking up excreta.

Guide dog owners pick it up. Bag over hand, know where the dog’s rear end is, sweep hand in arc until you find it.

A friend of mine is a guide dog owner with no sight. On a walk recently the dog did a poo and I half heartedly offered to pick it up, but was relieved when friend did it much more efficiently than me.

I see a guide dog regularly. It goes outside the office on the way in- it is told to go next to a post and it does. The owner uses the post to find the poo- but mostly a security guard or passer by does it.

A relative of mine has a Guide Dog; they pick up the dog's poo.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/01/2018 18:01

I worked for blind services and I had several clients with guide dogs. The dogs are trained to alert their owner as to wear the poop is so the owner can pick it up.

TheHappyRedDragon · 14/01/2018 18:13

This is really interesting. Good question, OP.

Gdowner2018 · 27/04/2018 20:42

I have just finished my guide dog training and these dogs are trained spot on when using the busy and big busy. How ever we have been tought to pick up if and when a big busy occurs. We follow down the dogs back to the rear and the poo will be in that area. How ever if they do get caught short they are trained to use the gutter so this makes the job easier. Sian my gd has not fell short as yet but we are trained to lead by example a lot of time and money all from sponsors go in these dogs. We are so great full to be able to have a opportunity to live life again it’s a small task to be asked. We carry poo bags and hand wash at all time just in case this does happen. But rest assured we do all we can to do our bit. Even if there is a exception for us. We wouldn’t like to step in it. There for we would always do our best to assure you didn’t.
Hope it helps. And ur grandmother gets her gd 🤞 I know her training will be spot on. And a big thumbs up to you puppy trainers you do a great job. Sian n me x
