You shouldn't get a chef kitchen-y stuff for his birthday, right?

Dp is good friends with a chef. It is his thirtieth birthday next week and DP wants to get him something kitchen-y. This person does like cooking a lot, and talks about techniques/cannot bear to watch someone else chop an onion (not kidding, he's actually taken the knife from my hand when I am cooking for him and his partner.)

However - I sort of think we shouldn't get him something kitchen-y. He also likes a certain type of single malt, which is quite expensive, so he doesn't normally get it. For a thirtieth we could splash out on a bottle. DP thinks that other folk will have thought of this though.

So, whisky, or like, kitchen stuff? Thank you

Whiskey without a doubt.

Hulababy · 04/02/2017 18:14

Depends on what he is like. I have asked for and received kitchen stuff in the past for gifts. It can be a nice gift depending on the person, esp if something a bit more fancy or something he wouldn't just go out and buy himself.

PencilsInSpace · 04/02/2017 18:14

Get the whisky. Anything kitchen-y is likely to be something he already has (and probably a better one) or something he knows he won't use.

If he ends up with two bottles of whisky it's not the end of the world Grin

SheSparkles · 04/02/2017 18:14

Whisky. Proper chefy kitchen stuff is really specialist, the malt would be a real treat

Hayels · 04/02/2017 18:14

If he's a chef and enjoys cooking, chances are he'll have every type of kitchen gadget he wants/needs
I'd go with the whisky- he won't mind if he gets more than one.
Or a third option could be a hamper of good quality foodstuffs?

Scaffleen · 04/02/2017 18:17

My husband is a chef and I would never buy him kitchen stuff! He's extremely fussy. If you know exactly what he likes then get it but it's so hit and miss. I'm sure he would love the whiskey.

travellinghopefully12 · 04/02/2017 18:21

Thank you. I am thinking whisky, and will show DP this thread to bring home the point. He thought kitchen-y stuff worth £40 would last, while whisky will be gone in six months, but so what, I think friend will like the whisky more, and frankly, if we're spending that much I want to get something he likes.

I'd be very careful about giving kitchen stuff to any friend, let alone a chef, unless I knew their kitchen well, and that they'd want what I was thinking of. Obviously if they'd suggested something, that's different. Go for the whiskey!

PotatoMcKale · 04/02/2017 18:28

As a teenager I worked in a kitchen making the side salads for a chef who was locally known as being the best in our (rather small!) area. Someone bought him a pasta maker and cookbook one Christmas and I had to endure an entire Boxing Day listening to him rant furiously about the insult.

Definitely buy the whiskey. Or even socks. Anything but kitchen stuff!

harderandharder2breathe · 04/02/2017 18:31

Whiskey

Agree that a chef will have good quality kitchen stuff already

TheHobbitMum · 04/02/2017 18:35

Coming from a family of chefs do not buy chef items! He will smile, say thank you, then never use it again! He'll have every item he needs for his kitchen. Buy the Malt 👍

TheJiminyConjecture · 04/02/2017 18:39

Ask Dp is friend was a cleaner would he buy him a mop? Surely it's the same principle

GeekyWombat · 04/02/2017 19:11

Whisky. He's a chef. He's got everything he needs already.

user892 · 04/02/2017 19:18

Whiskey - buying him cooking equip is pretty patronising and likely to be wrong.

Ilovecaindingle · 04/02/2017 19:20

My ds is a chef and loves getting chef stuff!! Look on the professional chefs sites for some fab things!!

museumum · 04/02/2017 19:22

Not sure what you get a chef for £40 - have you seen the price of chefs knives!!???
