Buying fags is a nightmare at the moment.

I know, I know. But it is. They're all changing over to the same sludge green packaging.

Which means all the shops are winding down their stock so they never have the cigs I want. None of the staff anywhere know what the new packaged ones are.

The fags I bought yesterday have turned out to be 'crush ball' ones which means if you squeeze the filter they turn menthol. Boak.

It's almost enough to make me quit.

Bugger. That's probably the point.

Whinge whinge whinge. AIBU?

I think the government are determined that everyone quits, what they will do about the loss of revenue will be interesting to witness. Try e cigarettes at least you can buy them online and get the same thing every time.

TheNewMrsGeraldButler · 04/02/2017 13:23

I personally hate smoking but think it's ridiculous if they're trying to change packaging etc. Grown adults can make their own choices. I enjoy a glass of wine when not upduffed and would not be impressed if they started changing the packaging to make it less appealing. I buy wine because I'm an adult, choose to, and enjoy it. Same should be with cigarettes.

SalemSaberhagen · 04/02/2017 13:24

Some of the pictures are just ridiculous. The impotent man curled up in a ball made me Grin. And the one of the man blowing smile in the child's face whilst she pushes his neck away!

They've stopped selling tens now too.

user1477282676 · 04/02/2017 13:25

Get yourself a vape. I gave up when I moved to Oz and all the packs had hideous pics of death and disease on them. Plus people look at you like Shock if they see you with a fag.

Then they ask you if they can have one. Grin
Seriously....vaping is AMAZING.

QueSera · 04/02/2017 13:26

What I hate is that with companies no longer able to label 'lighter' cigs, I can't figure out if I'm buying the heavy-duty ones or the lighter ones - I'm probably smoking the worse ones just because I've no idea what's what, some don't have ANY info on packs about tar, nicotine levels etc. So the anti-smoking brigade have probably left me intaking more tar/nicotine/etc than I want to be grrrrr

user1477282676 · 04/02/2017 13:26

Gerald the pics in Oz made me give up! I just couldn;t do it any more....one image shows a man in the prime of his life and then next to it, him dying of cancer. Hideous.

Chloe84 · 04/02/2017 13:28

I'm more concerned about tobacco companies targeting marketing at children in developing countries.

EastMidsMummy · 04/02/2017 13:30

The loss of revenue will be compensated for by the reduction on the massive drain on the NHS.

TheSnowFairy · 04/02/2017 13:31

I got told they're stopping selling 10's from May, am hoping that's enough for me to give up 🚭

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/02/2017 13:32

I really am quite traumatised (well, a bit) by some of the pictures - the guy with the throat tumour and the lung autopsy ones...they are just horrible (they still do the one with the throat hole, by the way). I just SELL them! I don't smoke and have never smoked but I bet I see way more of these horrific pictures than any people who DO smoke.

Tempted to sue for trauma...but won't.

elodie2000 · 04/02/2017 13:35

Ok, so smoking isn't good for you so I do get it. I agree with making them as unappealing as possible I haven't smoked for a long time and don't know many people who still do... But, alcohol is the killer in my own experience and along with cigarettes should be sold in plain bottles or cans with dirty green labels & massive photos of the awful effects the addiction or misuse of alcohol has on physical & mental health and society in general.

MrsJayy · 04/02/2017 13:36

The Packaging is to be changed by May the local shop know what i smoke but the other day i went elsewhere the woman was flapping about with the flaps trying to find the right ones with all the flapping and black packets I think it is time to stop.

elodie2000 · 04/02/2017 13:37

The loss of revenue will be compensated for by the reduction on the massive drain on the NHS
Hmm Ok.

user1477282676 · 04/02/2017 13:37

Elodie I'm completely with you. The way smoking is demonized FAR outweighs drinking. It's socially acceptable to drink to excess but have a fag and MY GOD! You're TERRIBLE!

YouHadMeAtCake · 04/02/2017 13:39

Great time to quit then! I did it many years ago. Go on, you'll feel great!

FannyWisdom · 04/02/2017 13:40

I don't follow the fag trends.

When I smoke I have JPs lungbleaders I attempted to buy 10, only 20s and to add insult to injury they were lambert and Butler in some shitty box that you need a masons handshake to open.

Luckily I had some amber leaf for a rolly while I worked out how to get in em.

juneau · 04/02/2017 13:40

My FIL, a life-long smoker, died last week of metastatic oesophageal cancer (it had spread to his lungs). He'd been ill for less than two years, but OMG he suffered. The treatment is horrible and he died gasping for breath, a tumour wrapped around his windpipe. If that's the kind of end you're hoping for, go head. Personally, I'd seize the opportunity to quit. I wouldn't wish my FIL's suffering on anyone.

elodie2000 · 04/02/2017 13:42

user Both are bad - I smoked for years and it's disgusting I know BUT it's alcohol that has destroyed the lives of many (too bloody many) people I know and have known.
They should sell it in bottles with labels similar to Tesco value brand! Grin.

YouHadMeAtCake · 04/02/2017 13:43

Omg I just googled the price of cigarettes in the UK Shock

Olympiathequeen · 04/02/2017 13:43

I remember nursing patients dying of lung cancer. As a very young nurse it did seem to me that they were being slowly suffocated and it must be agony.

If I had been a smoker it would have put me off. Take the opportunity to quit!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 04/02/2017 13:44

I'm not affected by the pictures. Smoking is bad for you, I get it. But my beautiful DH died of cancer which was nothing to do with smoking. I've brought my DC up alone since he died, but my old age is likely to be very lonely. Living to my 80s doesn't have any appeal.

The revenue from tobacco is very much more than the costs of smoking to the NHS. On top of that the premature deaths of smokers save the Treasury shed loads in pensions. So they want to put us off but they're unlikely to ban them. There's a hell of a lot of smuggling too, which I guess is the main reason behind the new packaging.

MinesaBottle · 04/02/2017 13:45

I haven't seen any of the new packs yet, have they just started coming out? They can't be as bad as the ones in Malaysia - pics of miscarriages and people with half a face - but I can't imagine they'll be easy to ignore Sad

HMF1 · 04/02/2017 13:47

There is a diiference between smoking & alcohol consumption & I am making this point only in response to some of the comments on here. You can harm other people's health as a direct consequence of the act of smoking in their presence however you cannot harm another persons health by simply drinking alcohol in their presence. I think there are huge differences in the public health consequences & therefore I think it is reasonable to regulate smoking before considering any further regulation on the sale of alcohol. When I started working I woked in an open plan office with many smokers who could smoke all day & some did. I came home every night reeking of smoke it was unpleasant to say the least.

SauvignonBlanche · 04/02/2017 13:53

It's almost enough to make me quit Great! Grin

I remember moaning about 20 years ago when I could no longer smoke in the staff room (in a hospital ward!). We rarely got breaks off the ward and the idea of hiding in cupboards or toilets encouraged me to quit and I'm delighted it did.

I could be dead by now, I watched my DM die from lung cancer, I wouldn't want to put my DCs through that. Sad

user1477282676 · 04/02/2017 13:56

HMF but the fact is that alcoholics affect the health and well beings of their loved ones daily.
