To look forward to surgery under GA?

Am awaiting Doctor's appointment but am pretty convinced after extensive research (Dr Google) that this will lead to a referral and the need for surgery.
The surgeon will probably be the one that did an original op on the site. He's lovely, such a nice guy so I'm looking forward to seeing him again. I also understand that it will probably involve an overnight stay in hospital, so a decent night's kip away from the children and the chance to read m book, watch some telly and do some knitting in peace. And now cooking to do for bastard ingrates.
So AIBU, or even just plain weird to be quite excite at the prospect?

I wish I could have suspended the time between the injection and actually going right under- that moment where everything is floaty and fuzzy is lovely !

OneWithTheForce · 03/02/2017 22:44

Are you kidding, three kids and a husband I don't get a break that easily!

What? Surely having a husband should mean it should be possible for you to have a break? You make it sound like your husband is a reason you don't get a break? I'm a lone parent and I can find time to read a book and knit.

DJBaggySmalls · 03/02/2017 22:44

I'm so cheerful after sedation. No anxiety, not a care in the world. I'll happily chat to anyone.
Unfortunately I talk utter bollocks but you cant have everything.

Bearfrills · 03/02/2017 22:45

I haven't had a GA since I was a baby so no memory to use for reference but I'm in next week for a caesarean section and - much as I love DH and the DC - I'm looking forward to quiet time in the hospital with the new baby, my meals cooked for me, no one shouting "mam .... mam .... MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM" and lovely little nana naps in the afternoon. They're going to have to call security to remove me from that ward.

PacificDogwod · 03/02/2017 22:45

Take ear plugs and an eye mask to hospital.
Good book, knitting, chocolate (for after) - sorted.

I reacted pretty badly to the only GA I've ever had but I definitely have little day dreams of that mythical sort of illness

DramaAlpaca · 03/02/2017 22:45

I loved having a GA, had some really good dreams when I was under & woke up fresh as a daisy. Much better than sedation, that was horrendous & I was really weepy the next day.

Notjustuser1458393875 · 03/02/2017 22:46

Stupid phone. That mythical sort of illness that doesn't make me feel dreadful but requires a few days of strict bed rest.

ALemonyPea · 03/02/2017 22:51

I'm having major surgery in two weeks, won't be much good for at least three weeks afterwards. I can't wait!

DMCWelshCakes · 03/02/2017 22:51

I bloody love a nice general anaesthetic. The last one I had was in a private hospital so I had a room to myself. Was great.

I was lucky that it was wisdom teeth extraction so nothing massively difficult or worrying.

MoreProseccoNow · 03/02/2017 22:53

I had my gallbladder out a couple of years ago. Best rest I've had in ages; was off work for 3/4 weeks. Sheer bliss.

megletthesecond · 03/02/2017 22:59

GA's and get sedation have been my only breaks in 8 years of single parenthood. They worry me but I try and see the upside of getting a decent rest.

'Brain being infused with champagne' yes annan , that.

SSYMONDS · 03/02/2017 23:00

I've been under GA twice since I had kids and both times it's felt like a genuine luxury. I actually fantasise about needing one again- and the codine

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 03/02/2017 23:00

GA I tend to react badly to. But I must be the only person I know who really enjoyed having a wisdom tooth out. I am a wuss when it comes to dentists so paid extra for gas and air. Bloomin' marvellous stuff. Sober to five pints gone in a few sniffs, happily "drunk" throughout, straight back to sober afterwards with no hangover.

expatinscotland · 03/02/2017 23:01

My mother had her gallbladder out last Summer and it ended up being more complicated (she has a stone in her duodenum, for starters) so she was out for 3 hours. She was hilarious! I drove my dad and I home and we got some takeaway. She rang me from her room around 8pm and asked why she had to stay overnight (my dad had already told her and so had the surgeon). So I told her again. Then she rang around 10pm and asked the same thing. I told her and told her I was going to bed. We went over there to pick her up and take her home the next day and she had no recollection of ringing me at all.

hollinhurst84 · 03/02/2017 23:02

I had one and got discharged within an hour Sad no naps for me!

GREATAUNT1 · 03/02/2017 23:02

I quite enjoy hospital too, as you get everyone's attention, tea, & toast in bed, & I feel soooooo relaxed after the GA.

expatinscotland · 03/02/2017 23:04

First time I had gas and air I was in labour. Said, 'This is some good shit!' The midwife laughed. Thing is, I'm not sure if it's supposed to last longer or it didn't because I used to smoke a lot of marijuana when I was in my 20s, but it wore off too fast. GA is the dawg's.

Heychickadee · 03/02/2017 23:05

I like the feeling of going off to sleep, but I'm a post-anaesthetic spewer Hmm

megletthesecond · 03/02/2017 23:05

And the magazines. Fairly recent copies of Hello and Now magazine. Maybe a fashion glossy or travel mag.

WayfaringStranger · 03/02/2017 23:12

Some years ago, I had my wisdom teeth out under GA in a private London hospital. For reasons unknown to me, they administered vast amounts of fentanyl post-op and I was feeling fucking amazing. I wasn't high, just in a very happy mood. I was so excited when a charming woman came around and asked what I would like to eat. The chef, she said, was a top restaurant chef and would make me something soft. Honestly, who knew scrambled eggs could be so amazing?! I had the best day. Grin

buttbutt · 03/02/2017 23:15

You are sooo NBU. A colleague recently had a week in hospital. I was proper jealous. A whole bed, with nobody clambering in. Meals, cooked by someone else and eaten in the bed! And the drugs! Someone should market it as the ultimate break for frazzled parents.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 03/02/2017 23:16

Wayfaring - I doubt it was the chef. Post c-section and off my face on pethidine straight into the dural cavity round my spinal column (that shit is amazing), I fell on a dried out, curled up at the edges NHS cheese sandwich like it was manna from heaven.

HashiAsLarry · 03/02/2017 23:17

I had an op recently and they led me to believe it would be under local. When I got there they announced it was general. It was great, I had a lovely relaxing sleep I wouldn't normally get plus a successful op that was very needed. YANBU at all.

YWBU if you were purposely seeking an operation for this though. But you aren't.

Badhairday1001 · 03/02/2017 23:19

Totally with you on this one.
