To ask anyone who wishes to retain personal EU membership to sign this petition

Rainbunny · 02/02/2017 17:55

MEP Guy Verhofstadt has spoken about the idea of giving personal EU membership to UK citizens who wish to remain connected to the EU. It has a small likelihood of happening but if everyone who wants it speaks out the chance can only get better.

If like me you are sad to be separated from our closest neighbours and allies while our PM makes a Faustian bargain with the Trump, it's more important than ever to speak up. I also encourage people to message Guy Verhofstadt on his facebook page.

Signed* better to have options than non at all and even if it isn't solely for the UK citizens benefit it's good idea to offer back door for those that didn't ask for the front one to be closed.

Fingers crossed

Fitzsimmons · 04/02/2017 09:51

Signed. Don't know why leave voters are so against this idea. No one is forcing them to apply for it.

CaptainBrickbeard · 04/02/2017 09:55

Signed! I can't articulate my fury at Leave voters, at Cameron, May, Corbyn and every other fucking dickhead that is intent on dragging the country into catastrophe so really any glimmer of opportunity to escape even a tiny bit of the political and economic suicide of Brexit sounds great to me!

scaryteacher · 04/02/2017 09:56

I live in an EU country Kalinka and I voted leave.

scared Verhofstadt is an arch federalist, and he is not looking after your interests, but trying to undermine a result that was not to his liking. Had remain won, would I have been offered the opportunity to renounce my 'EU citizenship' that I don't want, (and that doesn't exist as the EU is a treaty organisation, and not a State with the power to confer citizenship on anyone)? Doubt it.

I guess its true, even turkeys sometimes vote for Christmas.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 04/02/2017 10:00

I'm not sure why people are signing in order to enrage leave voters? Why does it matter to me. Is there a reason?

Livelovebehappy · 04/02/2017 10:03

Stupid, but, hey, if it brings a little bit of joy to the people against Brexit, then go for it. There are going to be so many petitions out there soon that it's going to make all petitions lose their worth. If we are going down this route, why not have another petition for those who want Corbyn as their prime minister instead of May? Now do you see what a stupid idea the petition is?

Willyoujustbequiet · 04/02/2017 10:05

By all means sign but I think you're deluded of you believe this stands a cat in hells chance.

scaredoffallout · 04/02/2017 10:14

This is what I mean - why do people who are against this idea even bother to open the thread? Why should anyone who is a leaver and/or who doesn't agree with this, care about it one way or another?

TheElementsSong · 04/02/2017 10:21

This is what I mean - why do people who are against this idea even bother to open the thread? Why should anyone who is a leaver and/or who doesn't agree with this, care about it one way or another?

Because they care so little that they have to tell everyone their opinion on how little they care, which ultimately is because everyone is supposed to care very much about said opinion?

^^ Confused

TheElementsSong · 04/02/2017 10:30

Or...

It's like those posters who show up on a TV thread to sneer at trashy drama, or a decorating thread about paint colour to sneer about first world problems. Or any poster who rushes to post their uniquely timeless pearls of wisdom without reading to the end of the thread first - especially if they even say "haven't RTFT..." Grin

Livelovebehappy · 04/02/2017 10:30

Scared of fallout; the same way anyone opens a thread on an AIBU forum. You open it to say YABU or to say YANBU. Isn't that the way it works??

Fitzsimmons · 04/02/2017 10:33

I think it's a case of "I don't want it so no one else can have it either."

TheNiffler · 04/02/2017 10:35

Signed. I really don't want to lose my EU rights, I'm gutted at Brexit :(

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/02/2017 10:41

I think people also need to be writing to their MP's especially those that supported Remain and in particular those who opposed the government this week

We are leaving I am one of the 48% that voted to remain I am not seeing anything productive which should be coming from the opposition on how brexit could be no proposals just a few statements banded about

Rainbunny · 05/02/2017 19:36

Just checked back in and I'm glad a few more pps have signed it . As to the naysayer- leave voter comments. I'll just share a personal story that I remember when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges.

My great-great grandfather was a vicar in Berkshire around the turn of the 19th century. He was a very decent and popular man by all accounts, he was also a prolific diary writer and most of us, his descendants have had the opportunity to read his diaries. I got to read some of them as a teenager and the subject that always sticks in my mind the most were his opinions on the women's suffrage movement. He was absolutely appalled by it, the idea of women having the vote seemed against all God's intentions, he was certain that it wouldn't possibly be successful and would just cause upset and family upheaval because he firmly believed that women were not equipped to be able to handle a duty like voting, we couldn't intellectually understand the issues and our temperaments were not suited for such unnecessary responsibilities. He thought the members of the WSPU (Women's Social & Political Union) were dangerous fanatics... Throughout his diaries and in his remarks on the movement is the one consistent theme- women's suffrage could never possibly succeed. I imagine many (men and women maybe) shared his views on suffrage back then. So yes, this petition may seem ridiculous and subject to sneering by leave voters but I choose to have hope!
