To think it is so much more expensive to eat healthily?

So I've been trying to eat healthily and generally portion control/calorie count for about 3 weeks. Lost about 9lb so far so it does seem to be working a bit.

However, I have noticed that my food bill has increased SO much since I've been doing it! I'm not buying anything super expensive, just increased my fruit and veg intake a lot and eating less stuff that is cheap but filling such as bread and pasta.

Aibu to find it quite disheartening that it is so much more expensive to eat healthy? I'm just about to start a new job and am going to be very broke until I get paid (in March) so I'm going to have to live very frugally and I really don't want to put back all the weight I've lost back on, ideally I want to lose more! I already batch cook, buy frozen veg (cheaper), shop at Aldi for cheap fruit & veg etc but it is still so expensive Sad

I agree. It's all the fresh fruit and veg top ups that cost me a lot.

AndNowItsSeven · 01/02/2017 17:04

Yes I have found the same, I can't make fresh soup because I can't chop etc so have been buying WW soup. I really like them but they are so expensive.

Owllady · 01/02/2017 17:04

I find it cheaper to buy fruit and veg. I bought a bunch of banana in Tesco yesterday for 50p
Also try lidl/aldi/Morrison's

Iloveswears · 01/02/2017 17:05

Yep, it is.

vshah140113 · 01/02/2017 17:05

Yes definitely

Owllady · 01/02/2017 17:06

And now it's seven, how about making one from frozen veg that is already chopped? You can even buy frozen soup mixes. Or a sready chopped soup mix in the veg section?

smilingsarahb · 01/02/2017 17:08

Oh god ...someone is going to mention lentils very soon

formerbabe · 01/02/2017 17:09

Yes it is. I know a good way to lose weight is lean protein and veg. Good quality meat, chicken or fish is expensive. Pasta and other carbs fill you up for a much lower cost.

Lentils

And chick peas!

Owllady · 01/02/2017 17:11

I can't stand lentils :o

nancy75 · 01/02/2017 17:11

It depends on what fruit you buy, stuff like bananas are quite cheap, problem is I don't like them so end up spending a fortune on raspberries, peaches and cherries! I don't find veg too bad but the fruit does cost a lot

FearTheLiving · 01/02/2017 17:12

I've always found the opposite. Fruit and veg is cheaper a and you get more meals out of it than buying junk food. For the cost of a frozen pizza, I can buy almost a weeks worth of veg.

nancy75 · 01/02/2017 17:12

Lentils & chick peas will never darken my door

confusedandemployed · 01/02/2017 17:12

There are ways to make it cheaper but, in general, I'd agree.

Buy frozen veg (ready chopped if you need to), eat more pulses, pork steaks are a good option as is Turkey. We go through tons of lentils and chickpeas. Fruit wise stick to apples, bananas, oranges. Berries and soft fruit can be expensive - but having said that almost all supermarkets have special offers on some things. Tesco are currently flogging kiwi fruit round our way.

AndShesGone · 01/02/2017 17:13

It's very expensive. An apple is the same price as a whole packet of biscuits.

It's really difficult to eat healthy and cheap as you need a store cupboard full of tasty additions to make lentils taste fabulous in my opinion. And I like lentils.

HelenaDove · 01/02/2017 17:14

Agree To maintain a 10 stone loss is bloody expensive.

Owllady · 01/02/2017 17:14

How expensive are these frozen pizzas? :o

Also markets are good. You buy a whole bowl for £1. There is also a van with eggs, yogurts, cheese etc all near expiry....

SharkiraSharkira · 01/02/2017 17:15

Fresh fruit and veg is definately the most expensive bit. For obvious reasons it doesn't last long so I end up shopping more often than I normally would - before I would probably fill up the freezer and there wouldn't be a lot I'd need to top up on but now I'm shopping twice a week, spending more and probably ending up with less volume of food.

I'm fine with chopping so I'll buy stuff in whatever the cheapest form is which is generally frozen - I don't really like most canned veg (with a few exceptions) as I find it normally soggy and horrible, and canned fruit is usually in syrup (which I hate).

How can I shop cheaper but still lose weight?

aldi and lidl are your friend they do super six veg and fruits each week go in each shop and buy the super six that gives you twelve fruit or veg each week and would cost around seven pounds ,

SerialReJoiner · 01/02/2017 17:16

Nah, I disagree, but we dont eat meat and I literally love a lentil dish. Cheap, filling, healthy, "good quality protein". What's not to love!

Check out Dr McDougall's way of eating - very very cheap and healthy.

BarbarianMum · 01/02/2017 17:16

I think YABU - if you are prepared to eat a fairly monotonous diet of onions, carrots, potatoes, cabbage, pasta, beans, cheap cuts of meat etc (as opposed to a fairly monotonous diet of frozen pizza, pies and cheap ready meals) then healthy eating can be very cheap. If you want lots of salad, fruits, steak, quinoa, goji berries, salmon etc then it is expensive. You can also eat expensively and unhealthily.

Soubriquet · 01/02/2017 17:17

A weeks worth of veg for the price of a pizza? Yeah right

The cheapest pizza is around £1

No way can you buy a weeks worth of fruit and veg for £1

ButterflyOfFreedom · 01/02/2017 17:17

I was having this conversation with DH the other day. We now shop at Aldi and realise that actually some fruit & veg is an absolute bargain! Last week I got a broccoli for 19p, a banana for 11p & a kilogram of carrots for 39p!!
You can easily make some cheap meals like pasta sauce (ie. a tin of tomatoes, an onion, a pepper) on some pasta. That would work out about £1 and feed 2 adults & 2 toddlers.
