It happens in the fruit and veg section and in the fridge section.

The reduced stuff gets put out later on at night and its like everyone loses their mind. Elbows go flying, people start swearing. I saw an old man push into a woman with his trolley for some grapes. The poor worker putting the stuff out has a deep, harrowing look in their eyes as they try to throw the stuff down and get away!

It is insane. 10/10 would recommend. Grin

gaelicgirl100 If it was just about people struggling to feed their family on a budget it would make more sense. But a huge tray of grey/green diced lamb that costs £7.29, versus £7.50 for a nice fresh one from the main shelf isn't budget breaking. Or crates of fancy branded biscuit bars with 20p off when you could buy the store brand for half the price anyway.

Sometimes I've gone at the end of the day and seen all the 5p bread put out. The homeless people come in and buy that which is great, but bargains of that level are rare and not what the crowds are forming for.

MrsJayy · 01/02/2017 10:36

Yes we live in a uni town and the students are like a scene from the walking dead when they see the whoops trolly go down the aisle the come out of nowhere and jostle for reduced coleslaw.

Evilstepmum01 · 01/02/2017 10:36

I know its not funny but I'm laughing at the wheelchair being moved, the old wifey saying 'youre not local' and horrified at asda worker!
WTF people, its only food! We find Lidl much more civilised! Tho our local Tesco isnt too bad. There is one lady who picks up stuff from the reduced section, takes it to the fag/customer service desk and then tries to barter the price down further!
I'm quick, I slink in between the trollies and massed hordes, look at whats available and politely go excuse me, pick up and slink back out!!

sobeyondthehills · 01/02/2017 10:37

My tescos is a massive one, and the managers have obviously thought this through.

They reduce throughout the day and put things in different places.

You never know when its going to come.

RhodaBull · 01/02/2017 10:38

I wish they'd just leave the stickered stuff on the right shelves, then it's a nice surprise to come across a bargain.

The Waitrose reductions are generally really mean. That Charlie Bigbum stuff which costs upwards of £5.50 reduced by 30p. But still there are meanies poring all over it.

I think bargain hunting is a state of mind, not a state of pocket. Some neighbours are both consultants of the medical kind and I saw her barging in the reduced.

7SunshineSeven7 · 01/02/2017 10:40

HappyFlappy Must have missed that one while I was struggling to get through the hordes! Grin

I'm in a uni town too but its mainly older people who are fighting for the stuff. I feel like saying ''I hope you're happy with your wilted cabbage, I'll just take a full priced steak and put it on my eye to help with the swelling!''.

Sainsbury leave stickeredstuff on the shelf it is much more civilised and you get a surprise bargain

ImperialBlether · 01/02/2017 10:42

Just to warn anyone who's thinking of pulling a fast one - I knew a woman who changed stickers on reduced items and ended up refusing a caution - "I'm innocent!" - and had to pay £750 in files and solicitors' costs.

7SunshineSeven7 · 01/02/2017 10:42

They reduce throughout the day and put things in different places.

You never know when its going to come.

I like to think they put it out and announce over the speaker ''Lets get ready to rumble!'' As people chase down the bargains like on Supermarket Sweep Grin

I hate it when people put full priced stuff there so you pick it up and think, ''Oh my god, this is reduced!'' And its not. Angry

the Tesco express where I am reduce loads of stuff down to pennies at a certain time, I once go a punnet of rasperries for 10p and a whole iceberg lettuce for 5p, some sundried tomatoes and mozzarella for about 31p so it can be worth it but it's not worth being crushed in a sandwich of people so if it's clear I have a browse but otherwise I steer clear.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/02/2017 10:46

I'd spend £12.49 in the reduced section for an organic goose, if I happened to spot it. In fact, residing currently in our freezer is a goose that dh found in the reduced section for frozen food in Sainsburys - it cost the vast sum of £15, but as they normally retail for around £50-£60, that is a good saving - and we will have it for a celebratory dinner sometime.

I have to say I have never seen any fighting over the reduced sections at the supermarkets I go to and they are all in some fairly rough areas. We've seen fights in the supermarket or in the car park - but it never seemed to be over produce (I think, in both cases, alcohol was the main factor). It enlivened our shopping trips, though.

"Let's get ready to rumble"Grin

alwaysthepessimist · 01/02/2017 10:48

seriously?! I have never witnessed this but ours is 24 hours so when would I go to watch?

whatsthepointofmorgan · 01/02/2017 10:49

If you think Tesco is bad you should see the greedy gits in M & S food halls at stickering time.
Usually it's older men who are the worst. I think they see it as a badge of honour to see how many items they can get reduced.

It's when people stockpile things in their trollies that annoys me.
To you really need 25 marked down, eat by the end of today strawberry trifles? It's greedy and not letting anybody else have a look-in.
If something is drastically reduced, I think the checkout people should refuse to put the items through if the person has more than 10 of the same items in their trolley or baskets.

HappyFlappy · 01/02/2017 10:49

And as others have pointed out, the bargains are rarely worth having.

Only1scoop · 01/02/2017 10:49

Or maybe theme from Chariots of Fire for the more ....Covert but Mercenary Bargain diver.

TurquoiseDress · 01/02/2017 10:50

YES!

I have seen this a lot in my local Tesco- there are the customers who follow the poor employee around with the trolley of soon-to-be-reduced goods.

Then they start to pounce before they've barely had a chance to put things out on the shelf.

I love checking out the reduced shelf/corner but I am much more subtle about it and would never dream of barging or pushing people out the way to get to see what is there!

handslikecowstits · 01/02/2017 10:50

More like the chariot scene in Ben Hur.

Babyroobs · 01/02/2017 10:51

in our local Tesco's we have one woman who is there every night determined to get the bargains. She knows what time they are reduced, so she fills her trolley with stuff from the bargain bin that has been partially reduced so that no-one else can get them. Then when the staff member comes along to do the final reductions down to silly prices ( like 30p for a tray of mince) she comes back to the person doing the reducing and hands the items over to be reduced further. Bloody cheek. People have complained but I think she is friends with people that work there and the staff just let her get away with it. If anyone challenges her about it,she will offer stuff from her basket, she clearly knows she is benig very unfair.

Chippednailvarnishing · 01/02/2017 10:51

My local M&S put the reduced stuff on the lowest shelf on the display where it normally sits.
If you want cheap stuff you have to shuffle around like quasimodo whilst pushing a trolley. It's for the determined only.

TurquoiseDress · 01/02/2017 10:52

Have to say that sometimes you get some really good stuff in the reduced section e.g. tuna steaks- yummy!

Often, it's just stuff that looks a bit dodgy

Also I have seen similar behaviour in our local M&S, not just confined to Tesco and similar!

People seem to have no shame and push past others, gather up as much of the reduced stuff as possible.

handslikecowstits · 01/02/2017 10:52

My opinion on this is the same as my opinion on the Boxing Day sales - can't be bothered.

Oh, and I once bought a yellow sticker product from a 'higher end' supermarket and ended up with food poisoning. Just sayin'.

Judydreamsofhorses · 01/02/2017 10:54

I quite often nip in past M&S on my way home from work, and pick up stuff that's reduced to stick in the freezer if I see it - there's never a scrum. Maybe it's just a more civilised class of customer there...

7SunshineSeven7 · 01/02/2017 10:54

HappyFlappy I was walking past! I will glance but never really get anything from there, I think if I was diving into the rabble I'd need a Gin

Whatsthepoint I've seen people just scoop stuff up, dump it in their trolley and then go through it to see what they want. Shock Totally against etiquette. Completely rage inducing for anyone who sees this happen.

Only1scoop If I could see them all running in slow motion to the sticker section I would pay hard cash. I would pay enough cash I could buy everything in the section Grin
