AIBU to feel annoyed that people constantly mispronounce my baby's name?

She's called Beatrix. People constantly call her Beatrice. Even when I correct them the conversation ends with 'Bye Beatrice'. Why? They're two different names! Question 2: How to go about correcting people in a nice way so they remember? I try saying "Beatrix, like the author Beatrix Potter" or "Beatrix with an x". Help!

Dd2 has a Welsh name. Lots of people call her Sarah, that is definitely not her name.

I'm Sally, and used to get older ladies telling me my real name must be Sarah, as Sally can ONLY ever be a nick-name.

Of course, random stranger, you know me better than I know myself.

reuset · 01/02/2017 11:10

Beatrix with a kiss on the end

That's just vomit inducing Grin Though I'm not the fluffy sort

I've heard people do this with Sadie, too. A bit rude. I'd imagine you don't get this so much any more for Sally

Busybee1234 · 01/02/2017 11:37

Reuset, as she is still a baby I think it is still the better option to smile sweetly and say 'with a kiss on the end' than clenching my jaw and hissing '' For the millionth time it is 'BeaTRIX' NOT 'BeaTRICE'!!" LOL! Hopefully it would go down OK at the baby and toddler groups. Grin

If you want to correct them I would say, It's Trix not Tris. I think some people have lazy hearing and don't hear the difference when you say the full name.

For what it's worth my dad spelt my name wrong my whole life. It is Sheila and he spelt it Shelia. His brother called me Shirley for most of my life.

Seeline · 01/02/2017 11:54

I have a similar problem with my name. It used to really annoy me when people used the other one, but now I just correct them with a I'm a X not a Y.

When I first started school many moons ago my Mum was called in because the teacher was convinced I had a hearing problem as I was completely ignoring her. My Mum pointed out if she called me X as that was my name, rather than Y which wasn't , she might have more luck Grin
I didn't recognise the other name as being an attempt at my name so just ignored it, assuming another child was being spoken to.

Thank you so much! It's an old family name. Most people really don't like it which has made me sad so hearing someone actually likes it has made my day! Smile

lalalalyra · 01/02/2017 13:57

I would just always add 'like Beatrix Potter' when introducing her. I do that with DD2, even though her name is easy it's commonly mixed up with another.

I had a stupid, stupid, stupid first name that I changed as soon as I was old enough so I've been really careful with names for my kids, but people still get a couple of them wrong.

DD3 is Lydia. Simple, yet people still spell and pronounce it wrong every day.

MitzyLeFrouf · 01/02/2017 14:01

But I bet loads of people call Beatrix Potter Beatrice too.

So they'll hear 'like Beatrice Potter'. Grin

Re Clara, Clare a is the traditional English version of the name and it was pronounced this way for centuries. The more widely known Clar a came over from Europe about 100 years ago. Both versions are correct, but obviously the family should choose the pronouciation.

greeeen · 01/02/2017 14:27

han01 oh my god that would drive me crazy! Do you see them regularly, does your DD not mind?

I have a foreign name that no one in the uk, not even DH pronounces properly. I have just stopped bothering to correct now and go with whatever people try. Used to annoy me as a child though.

OP love the name Beatrix and Beatrice actually. I wonder if there are Beatrice's out there constantly being mistaken for Beatrix?! May have to steal this for my baby names listGrin

Re Clara, Clare a is the traditional English version of the name and it was pronounced this way for centuries

I've never met anyone called this, but until I read this thread I assumed it would always be Clare a unless the person was German!

PuppyMonkey · 01/02/2017 18:54

I won't even go into the trouble we have with people pronouncing DD's name - she's Esme. Look up the zillion threads.

My own name is Oonagh, so as you can imagine it regularly stops people in their tracks. What I can't understand is that sometimes I have entire conversations about the spelling, it's Irish origins etc and carefully spell my email address out (my full name is in it) and their message will still say:

"Hi Una." GrinConfusedSad

bruffin · 01/02/2017 19:05

Both dh and dd have problems with th and f. They cant hear the difference and dh in particular cant say th.

TruJay · 01/02/2017 19:19

Yanbu our friends have a Beatrix and we have never pronounced it incorrectly and even if someone did surely only one correction is needed. It isn't hard.

We all use Bea as her nickname.
Beautiful name Beatrix, I love it!

Scratchythrustgenitalhugs · 01/02/2017 20:22

..

Ilovewillow · 01/02/2017 20:47

It's a lovely name! I would correct those that matter - relatives, friends school etc and ignore the rest. She will probably correct them herself in years to come my daughter does if anyone dares to shorten her name.

KERALA1 · 01/02/2017 21:07

How annoying. It's not hard is it?

KittyVonCatsington · 01/02/2017 21:09

My grandmother was called Beatrix and she got so fed up with it, she was permanently Trixie instead.

So very annoying OP-I feel for you!

RowRowRowtheFookingBoat · 01/02/2017 21:22

Oooh our daughter is Beatrix too! Great name OP 😀

I haven't found many people who get it wrong as yet (thou she's only 11months so still time yet)

Most people ask if it's with an x or c so that helps!

Funnily enough it's my dad who can't get it right, the amount of times I've had to correct him is insane.. 😂

JackLottiesMum · 01/02/2017 22:38

I'm sorry - but it's hard for some people to hear the slight differences in pronunciations - and I'm one of them! I'm also bad at learning languages for the same reason. I only get things if I see them written down - if it bothers you that much maybe you could consider writing it down for the worst offenders!
My name is super unusual - I only know of two other women who have the same name as me - and I've never even met either of them. So everyone pronounces my name differently. But it honestly doesn't bother me - I think it's more important people are trying to remember my name as I value effort more than accuracy. You have to remember no one is deliberately trying to get your little girls name wrong.

Asuitablemum · 01/02/2017 23:39

'Actually it's Beatrix, pronounced trix, like trixsie' and repeat. There are not trying to be mean, they just don't register that there are two different names. To be honest but sure I would either. But if you said this to me politely I would definitely listen and change.

SugarLoveHeart · 02/02/2017 01:04

I mean the Sara that's said like Sarah. Although Sara Sar-a is more common. It must be annoying for a Sarah Sara!

HappenedForAReisling · 02/02/2017 05:06

Saying that my name is Cassidy and people have always struggled with that.

I LOVE that name!

user1485706893 · 02/02/2017 06:43

Thanks very much :))

BarbaraofSeville · 02/02/2017 08:35

YANBU. Why do people do this?

My last name is reasonably unusual but not massively so and there is actually a fairly famous city in England with the same name that people usually spell and pronounce correctly. But my name is constantly mispronounced and/or spelled even though when giving my name I always say it and spell it so people can find me if I have arrived for an appointment or whatever.

But then the same people will then repeat it wrongly in the same conversation! Or repeatedly ask how to spell it, even though it is less than 5 letters long FFS.
