To let you know how to protest that Amazon is advertising on Breitbart "news" site?

Many MNers will have heard of Breitbart, the ultra right wing "news" site. Companies that advertise with them fund them - but some companies don't know they advertise with them as it's part of a "package", and some don't care.

UK companies may be even less aware that they advertise with them (I clearly shocked one smaller retailer yesterday by telling them!) but Amazon US and Amazon UK are refusing to answer questions about this.

You'll need a Twitter account for this (but they are easy to set up) and as a lot of us know companies REALLY pay attention when customers tweet them.

So if you go here:

www.wall-of-us.org/weekly-acts-of-resistance/2017/1/29/action-3-stop-the-loose-bannon

you can do this two ways, both explained on the Wall of Us site.

Via AdStrike where they will prepare the tweet for you and it will target one of the companies that isn't listening (usually US companies)

Or directly to the BB site (sorry but you have to click on it, just close your eyes a bit! News is on the left side and ads on the right) where you will find some of the UK companies that may not know they are on there - and Amazon UK that is also ignoring the campaign.

Yes drspouse I wonder where it came from?

drspouse · 31/01/2017 13:03

Guess 1. his daddy
Guess 2. a golden parachute from a bank
Guess 3. the backs of workers who aren't allowed to take loo breaks (in a warehouse in the UK/a factory in the third world)

Ah I see from Wikipedia it's a mixture of 2 and 3 with a side order of fraud and tax avoidance.

And his little friends, who helped in June and November.

Indeed. Although Banks did manage to utter the gem "What's wrong with owning a diamond mine? Someone has to," to follow up his dissing of working of journalists for being the despised "elite".

That was shortly before he became a UK media proprietor, of course.

Harumph. Hungry House (whose website I would never visit as I don't like junk food and they only offer kebab shops in our area) say:

Hey drspouse, We do not actively advertise on Breitbart, when you visit hungryhouse, Google remembers this by installing cookies on your browser. Google then automatically displays hungryhouse ads to potential customers on any website they are visiting as long as this website is a part of Google's display network. We are not currently able to pick and choose where these appear. I hope that clears it up a little & you have a fab rest of your week!

They clearly don't understand how their advertising works (or what options they have) since over 200 companies have managed to remove themselves.

Amazon boss Jeff Bezos is supporting legal challenge to Trump travel ban.

Well that's a step in the right direction.

Pausing I followed the Cologne threads on here and there was a fair time when the mainstream media were not picking the story up, much to the concern of many posters. Quite a few MNers were, at that point, unsubscribing from the Guardian because of it. Can't comment on the NY Times as I am not aware of its coverage although a quick Google search seems to show the first date of 5th Jan where Breitbart began covering it on 2nd Jan

I don't read Breitbart myself so was not aware of the awful stories others have referred to but I still believe free speech is an important part of a free and democratic society

drspouse · 01/02/2017 11:53

There's a big difference between allowing someone to spout racist garbage and paying for them to spout racist garbage.

The former is fine as long as it does not stray into the "shouting fire in a crowded theatre" territory. Which Breitbart frequently does.

Apparently 818 companies have ceased advertising on Breitbart as a result of people participating in this campaign: www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/breitbart-advertising-activists-campaign-petition-milo-yiannopoulos-a7559441.html
