To wonder who these wonder women are who 'cook from scratch' every day

Following on from all the threads about supermarket shopping and how to make it cheaper etc, I just can't get me head around all of the families 'cooking from scratch' everyday.

Is it just me that thinks that cooking from scratch everyday is an absolute nightmare? Are people confused about what cooking from scratch actually means? Are all these people who do this SAHM/SAHDs? Are they getting up at 5 am to put the meal together to heat up in the evening. I just dont get it.

I am currently on Mat Leave but when I was working full time and getting home around 1645/1700 every night, the last thing I wanted to start doing was cooking from scratch.

And what does cooking from scratch even mean? I enjoy sausage, mash, peas and gravy. The mash is from scratch...does that count?

I tend to cook from scratch at the weekend....a big pan of chilli which can cook for a few hours, or spag bol and then will freeze the left overs but I dont start cooking this on a thursday night for example.

Anyway, If I am being unreasonable and it is actually pretty easy to be super mum/dad and cook from scratch, can I please have your recipes?

Thanks! -

I do it every day. It's not hard. You just need to know how to prep and cook Hmm takes less time that a ready meal or a takeaway and is much cheaper.

Op I thought the same way as you but I've got into it now.
I make soup one night a week, in the soup maker and we have crusty bread with it, that DH picks up on the way home.
I do risotto in the oven, which involves chopping veg, adding things like salmon steak, or diced pancetta, or some leftover chicken, and veg such as peas, peppers, onions. Takes about half an hour all in.
I do a stir fry once a week, which takes about half an hour too.
Pasta with philli for sauce, plus whatever I have in.
I buy roast chicken in a bag from Aldi which does 2 nights as I use the remaining meat in a soup or risotto.
We have something like salmon steaks
I try to do a bit of batch cooking, or at least make extra and freeze another portion or two for another night.

I also have a meal planning calendar on my phone which helps with shopping and getting things out the freezer

It sounds harder than it is but it's taken me 20 years to get to this point!

I struggle with cooking because we spend every evening ferrying different children to different activities. Often the ones doing the activity want to eat afterwards so I need food that can be reheated. Stir fries and slow cooker recipes work best. I really couldn't manage without prepared vegetables from the freezer and lazy garlic and ginger!
