its devastating the rain forest, the clearance for its production destroys ecosystems and pollutes a whole continent. But its a very valuable and productive crop, when sustainably grown.some companies, such as unilever, claim all their palm oil is sustainabley grown. more than half of processed products on the shelves seem to contain palm oil.

How to others feel about palm oil?

Palm oil is notoriously difficult to avoid. It's in nearly everything. Here is a list of all the names it is marketed under and the most popular brands/products that contains it: drpongo.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/productpalmoillist2012flexweek.pdf

I would love to not use or consume anything containing palm oil. But it's extremely hard. I can recommend Meridian nut butters though, tasty and palm oil free.

Please remember that the dire stats about the carbon impact of beef are based on the US feedlot model.
UK grass fed free range meet has a much lower carbon fottprint, supports rural communities, is more humane and tastes better

I eat meat
I'm just picky about which meat I eat
my butcher lists the postcodes of the farms he buys from and they all welcome visitors

I try to by dairy etc from suppliers who have ethics
and loudly complain if a shop I'm in does not stock food I'm willing to buy.

I avoid palm oil, I think avoiding po and being vegan would be really difficult, I signed up to veganuary out of interest, I'm trying to greatly meat reduce, and they sent out a list of vegan snacks, all of which had palm oil in.
At the moment I'm accepting that I'm not up for the sacrifice of being completely ethical, I'm not buying palm oil, I'm only buying organic dairy and meat, I'm trying to reduce meat from my diet. It's a minefield though.

Ta1kinPeace · 29/01/2017 20:22

Organic dairy
ah yes, the mother of all cons ....
its the same dairy herd fed different food for a few months at a time
food miles is a better focus

user1484226561 · 29/01/2017 20:27

supports rural communities, is more humane and tastes better not in the south west it isn't, hundreds of badgers are being slaughtered inhumanly to prop up diary farming. I don't think it will stop until badgers are extinct. Sad

scottish beef and kentish dairy are badger safe

user1484226561 · 29/01/2017 20:31

that is worth knowing, thank you

Of course you're not BU.

It's hard work though.

I'm trying my best.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 29/01/2017 20:37

I'd say making as much as you can yourself reduces your use of it.

Thing that bothers me most is toiletries. They hide it under so many names but organic/sustainable shampoo etc is so expensive :(

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 29/01/2017 20:41

I stopped being cakes and biscuits.

Baking bread everyday is a bit of a nuisance, so that's off.

And of course toiletries, that's a minefield.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 29/01/2017 20:41

buying cakes.

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 29/01/2017 20:43

Sojiii dependant if you have time, it is quite easy to make your own sourdough with strong flour, vegetable oil, salt, water and natural yeast from the flour (need to feed it for a week before you can start making bread).

Does anyone knows if Quorn is more environmentally friendly than meat? It does sounds like it would be.

YANBU OP, I didn't even know they put palm oil in bread.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 29/01/2017 21:50

I do make my own bread but that's because there's only two of us. The bread machine seems bloody temperamental though. It comes out different every time, but at least I know what's gone in it.

Lidl is awful for putting palm oil in pretty much everything, though I buy raw ingredients, fresh food and tins there. Why the fuck is it in EVERYTHING? Angry. It never used to be.

wonderstuff · 30/01/2017 00:06

Quorn is a type of mushroom, so must be lower carbon footprint than meat. Iirc when it first came out it wasn't endorsed by the vegetarian society because they tested on animals during its development.

I can't imagine no dairy, I thought that organic cows didn't have the hormones pumped through them, so produce less but are less likely to get mastitis. Organic animals don't get given tons of antibiotics so are kept in larger land:animal quotas? Did I dream that fact?

BluePheasant · 30/01/2017 00:18

Duchy bread in Waitrose is palm oil free.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 30/01/2017 00:25

so. is there a list somewhere of common foods without palm oil? which margarine, for example, are you all eating?

Butter. Stop eating nasty processed food like margerine if you want to avoid palm oil AND eat ethically.

BluePheasant · 30/01/2017 00:26

We have just about managed to cut out palm oil mainly by doing the following.

Changed the types of biscuits, bread and peanut butter that we buy. Don't buy any ready made cakes. Only use butter not spreads.

Next time I buy soap will make sure I buy palm oil free.

I don't think it's as hard to avoid as people think, we have made a few changes and would say we are now close to being completely palm oil free. I know it's a drop in the ocean but it's got to start somewhere.
