AIBU Diet Coke at a party?

early30smum · 28/01/2017 18:50

DD (7) has just got back from a party. The only drinks put out for the kids were Diet Coke! She did get some water in the end, but the drink provided for each child was a mini can of Diet Coke!

AIBU to think this is a bit weird/uneccesary for a birthday party of 7-8 yr olds?

Kombacha is a repulsive fermented hipster drink Envy

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 28/01/2017 21:11

I didn't ask DD. She came back and happened to mention that there was only Diet Coke to drink, so she'd asked for some water

So we don't actually KNOW there was only diet coke, we know that a small child SAID there was only Diet Coke to drink. And she got water, so there was also water to drink....

That sounds exactly what I've have told my mum if I'd been drinking Diet Coke but thought she might not approve...

TheEagle · 28/01/2017 21:13

Ah, you mean Kombucha. Disgusting drink.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 28/01/2017 21:13

I'm amazed at the amount of you who don't differentiate between 'fizzy pop' and caffeine loaded coke!

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/01/2017 21:16

Yes. That muck.

stoopido · 28/01/2017 21:16

My son wouldn't drink it, he thinks it is an adults drink! He would ask for water.

KatieScarlett · 28/01/2017 21:17

Exactly. Now why would the wee one think to mention that tiny detail?

It's really not hugely addictive. The overwhelming majority of people who drink it are not addicted. Anything can be addictive to someone.

And reported for blog-spamming too. Hmm

Saddo control freaks..

Do as I say, not as I do.

Highalert · 28/01/2017 21:25

I doubt OPs DD will be having withdrawals because she's had one tiny can of coke.

KatieScarlett · 28/01/2017 21:29

By that logic, coffee, alcohol, etc. are all terrible too.
I had a friend who was addicted to lip balm. She blamed herself, not chap stick.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 28/01/2017 21:31

Narky Caffeine IS addictive. Many coke drinkers ARE addicted to coke, just like coffee drinkers are to coffee (without even realising it's an addiction)

extrabiotin · 28/01/2017 21:31

So you are a brilliant parent, no sugar, no coke, five a day, perfect lunchboxes and so on.

Great..kudos.

So now you deserve WINE at any o'clock.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 28/01/2017 21:32

No dear, caffiene CAN be addictive, as can anything. Some things are more addictive than others,
Diet coke is NOT inherently addictive. Most coke drinkers are NOT addicted to coke.
I don't think you understand the mechanics of addiction.

indigox · 28/01/2017 21:34

DS (7) has never been to a party where he's been given fizzy drinks and he's never had coke/diet coke anywhere, I'd be pretty pissed off if someone did give it to him.

thenightsky · 28/01/2017 21:38

in a short 10 years' time you'll be fretting about Charlie at parties and diet coke will be a blissful dream.

nomoneytoday · 28/01/2017 21:40

Yanbu. Caffeine based drinks are also "banned" in our house until around age 10.

extrabiotin · 28/01/2017 21:42

Go to bed now you need your sleep. 10 hours and no sugar. Night.

Quietly raising my cup of camomile tea to the other parents on the thread who would fall into the category of 'one of those' parents who are apparently scientifically illiterate because we could prefer water to aspartsme.

NoCapes · 28/01/2017 21:43

extra your posts don't seem to be aimed at anyone, based on anything anyone has said and generally don't make much sense at all

And in years to come, I expect all illegal drugs consumed by my precious flowers to be organic and home grown!

Sweet. But are you in for a world of angst!

Camomila · 28/01/2017 21:51

I don't think it's weird to offer fizzy drinks at a party by junior school age but I do think it's weird have it as the only choice...a fair amount of kids still aren't allowed coke by then so if only doing 1 drink e.g. for individual lunchboxes I'd stick with something 'safe' like cartons of orange juice.

Back in the day (I guess around age 11/12ish) I used to be allowed a mini coke as a special treat every time I went with DM to the supermarket and helped her shop... I guess every few weeks. They were secret cokes because my dbro wasn't allowed them as the caffeine made him misbehave Grin
