AIBU?

AIBU Diet Coke at a party?

early30smum · 28/01/2017 18:50

DD (7) has just got back from a party. The only drinks put out for the kids were Diet Coke! She did get some water in the end, but the drink provided for each child was a mini can of Diet Coke!

AIBU to think this is a bit weird/uneccesary for a birthday party of 7-8 yr olds?

A mini can at a party for 7yos? Fine.

It's weird to offer ONE type of drink at any kind of party.

Only for a certain type of parent is it weird to give diet coke to 7-8 year olds.

Of course it is fine. Unclench.

Do mini cans still exist? I remember the excitement of getting them at parties when I was young! Missing the point but one little can is surely fine?

Kids birthday parties are unnecessary, cake is unnecessary, sweets are unnecessary, balloons are unnecessary, bouncy castles are unnecessary. It's all "unnecessary". A bit of Diet Coke amongst all that other unnecessary stuff is fine.

It's fine, not weird to have pop at a party. At 7 they can, like your dd, ask for water and drink that instead.

I think that's very odd, I'd never even consider it, and wouldn't be impressed with someone giving my 7 year old coke!

Ds doesn't like pop so wouldn't drink it. I am not a massive fan of coke for children.

I still think you are being unreasonable though every so often at a party it's no big deal

4 for £1 in asda. I buy them as drinks mixers, the small cans are just the right size to get a good ratio to the alcohol in my glasses.

YANBU. She should have put water out as well. My DC won't touch fizzy drinks (or squash either, fussy little monsters) and would be so thirsty after a party & party food. I wouldn't give diet coke or coke to kids of 7 though (mainly because it is the work of the devil, and the only time diet coke is acceptable is when you want a vodka on slimming world), so maybe I am wierd too. That's absolutely fine.

I wouldnt be bothered about them having fizzy pop but my DS won't drink anything with bubbles so he will have went without a drink at all. Also kids normally need more than a small drink at parties due to the amount of running around.

Guess that makes me a certain type of parent then! I don't think 7 year olds need caffeine and wouldn't be impressed if DS2 came back saying that's all there had been at a party.

My 7 year old isn't shy and would just ask for water, purely because he doesn't like Coke.

It wouldn't bother me but I wouldn't have done it myself. My daughters 7th birthday party had 2 big jugs of squash, one orange and the other blackcurrant, then with lunch a carton of apple juice or tropical if I recall.
Seems strange to only have that drink but it's a party so a bit of a treat.

This reminds me of the dds school trip to a Chinese restaurant, where all the kids had a massive glass of coke as part of the meal. According to dd2 this made it The. Best. Trip. Ever. Think the teachers were a bit overwhelmed by the number of parents complaining!

I don't really see what is odd about mini diet cokes at a party.

Disgraceful, it's a shocking indictment of how low society has sunk.
I hope that you made a huge fuss and let them know what a superior parent you are to them?

It's fine, it's a one off treat. Unclench and be thankful this is your biggest problem right now.

And she asked for water anyway so didn't even drink the eeeeeeevil Diet Coke

(At brownie parties we provide squash but happily give water if a child asks for it. If I remember that a child normally asks for water I'll try to make sure a jug of water if available as well as the squash. On pack holiday we might give a small bottle of fizzy pop with one meal but again will provide squash, water or milk if asked).

Not weird to have fizzy drinks but weird to have just Diet Coke?! Surely coke & lemonade would be your standard along with fruit juice and water.

Children don't need birthday cake, parties or anything else for that matter.

I wouldn't be happy at that...but I wouldn't make a fuss or anything...mine is 7 and god knows how but we've managed to avoid him ever having Diet Coke or similar...
