Toilet at work left in a disgusting state: aibu to send a general email?

A poo thread!

Between 13 staff (rising to 18+ over the next couple of years), there are two unisex toilets, one either end of a long, long corridor. Every single day, one toilet is left with sloppy poo all down the inside, truly horrific! We know who it is, he goes into a clean loo, it's disgusting when he comes out. We left a very polite 'please clean up after yourself' note and bought a loo brush. No change. Premises/building manager have been called several times when it was really horrific.

AIBU to send a general email as the note has made no difference? I don't want to approach the guy, he's senior to me, really lovely (bar his shitty toilet habits) He must know we know, tho! Does he not clean up at home and check before he leaves?! He's started putting down the lid so at least the poo is hidden from first glance. (Not sure if I should be grateful about that Confused Should I start leaving some Branflakes on his desk? Or some Fruit and Fibre?!

It would be good to have two loos available, we mostly use it at break/lunch, so time is limited.

Which hotel, MrsC?

UnimaginativeUser · 27/01/2017 22:18

Off tangent here but we have a phantom tap turner in our loos. Someone, who despite cctv outside the door, seems to go unnoticed, but occasionally leaves ALL the taps on in the men's loos. The last time it happened, by the time someone noticed, the water had run out the bathroom door, down the stairs and out the front door! Seriously, WTAF??!!

Leave a note on the toilet;

Who ever has an arsehole between their shoulder blades, could they please lay across the toilet. Failing this, use the toilet brush like everyone else.

babychamcherryb · 27/01/2017 22:21

I have worked many places with poo leavers poo smearer poo splatters etc it's so common and I've worked with people you wouldn't expect to be doing this - top consultants and architects - makes me wonder if it's something to do with power over others in the workplace.

He must know you know who it is but keeps doing it? So odd. Even with a medical condition that doesn't excuse not cleaning it up.

Too bad it's 11 months until secret Santa because you could of given him some toilet duck rubber gloves and a brush then.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 27/01/2017 22:22

Jesus wept, what is wrong with some people!?

Accidents can't be helped (even then you'd still try your best to clean it all up!) but supposedly grown up adults leaving toilets in such a state because they're lazy/as some kind of dirty protest is fucking disgusting. As if cleaners don't have a hard enough job Angry

Agiraffeisnotacat · 27/01/2017 22:25

Another one saying having IBS would be irrelevant to how he leaves the toilet. I have IBS but clean up if needed, it's disgusting not to.

I second the anonymous note.
John, it has been noticed on several occasions that you leave the toilet in an unpleasant state, please ensure you clean the toilet bowl after use. This will save us all the embarrassment of having to have a direct conversation on this matter.

Greta84 · 27/01/2017 22:28

This is squatting I've just googled it...slightly off thread I did wonder why our toilet loo at work was always breaking...now I know why. Sometimes plop would end up on the seat and it wouldn't be cleaned.

Shoutout..I honestly couldn't tell you, this was some years ago...it was very pretty on a street, off the main town area, an historic building with beams...very attentive staff..who NEVER CHECKED THE FUCKING TOILET!! I was 7 month pregnant at the time and assumed it was somebody with mental health issues as there was no way anybody could do that by accident. I felt so sorry for the staff who had to clean it up...Colchester, it was nice by the way!! Just a random day out, I am in Herts Smile

Maryann1975 · 27/01/2017 22:31

It doesn't matter at all if he has IBS or any other toilet related problem. He is capable of leaving the toilet clean in the way he has found it. He is lazy and rude and I imagine can't see why he should have to lower himself to clean up his own mess.

I like the idea of getting a temp in to call him up on it who then just leaves after the awkward conversation. Failing that, a note left on his desk while he is in the toilet telling him to clean up after himself if no one is brave enough to speak to him about it.
Some people are so disgusting.

Trainspotting1984 · 27/01/2017 22:31

Why do you need to do anything? I accept that I've generally worked in bigger companies but no manager is going to disipline a staff member for shitting in the loo. The notes and posters just sound petty and busy body like.

It's not really your problem- complain to your managers the facilities aren't useable and let them decide what to do

That I really like. If we popped that on between me arriving and him arriving, he would read it and be able to remove it before anyone else went in there, not that anyone else appears to be using it. I might add instructions on how to use toilet roll folded up!

Use this loo paper in your workplace...it would automatically ensure everyone used it for anything revolting Wink

Seriously, though, it's a horrible situation to deal with. Very awkward, if he's simply refusing to change his habits. Giraffe's wording for the note is great.

(In my experience, people suffering with IBS tend to be the very opposite of inconsiderate. Usually are hyper-aware and have tried and tested methods for leaving loos spotless, as they sadly have to deal with it far more often than most of us. Must be so hard at times).

PickledCauliflower · 27/01/2017 22:39

I am terrified of toilet brushes.
I have never had one in the house, I just throw bleach down there.
I like the idea of using a toilet brush on a clean toilet - scrubbing it with a bit of bleach and then admiring the sparkle.
But someone in the house will use it to "clean" a shitty toilet. There is nothing more grim than the sight of a toilet brush with bits of poo and toilet tissue stuck to it - sitting in its holder with a bit of poo water in a puddle at the bottom.
Sorry to be so graphic, but that is the reality of the toilet brush.

If I lived alone and never had visitors I would have one and use it properly, but no way will I risk having one as I know what most people do to them.

ShoutOutToMyEx · 27/01/2017 22:40

I'll keep an eye out for any that match your description next time I'm in town MrsC. I'm glad you had a nice day anyway, apart from the poo Grin

Sorry to be so graphic, but that is the reality of the toilet brush.

That's really made me laugh. Sounds like a public service announcement Grin Grin

TheFormidableMrsC · 27/01/2017 22:45

Shoutout, yes please do, I am sorry I can't be anymore specific, I do remember buying really nice top in Topshop though for post pregnancy! What I do recall is that the windows were nearly pavement level and the door was low...do PM me if you recognise it!

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 27/01/2017 22:46

Pickled,

I feel your pain.

This might answer our prayers. Expensive though Confused

TheFormidableMrsC · 27/01/2017 22:48

Talking of toilet brushes though...I have them, in lovely stylish brushed steel cylindrical holders....but it's just me and my two kids...both know not to put them in shit. Both know to put loo paper round the bowl before a dump. I use them to have a really good daily scrub with bleach, there are no poo bits, paper or anything else on my brushes, they are spotless. The containers are regularly cleaned out and bleached so I applaud them used properly Smile

PickledCauliflower · 27/01/2017 22:49

Zuzu
That's new to me :)
Why didn't I invent that?

QuestionableMouse · 27/01/2017 22:51

All you need to do to clean a loo brush is hold it under the flush. I do it every day at work.

I personally can't stand dirty bastards who leave a loo filthy. He needs someone to have a stern word.

PickledCauliflower · 27/01/2017 22:52

Toilet brushes are great when used properly. I trust husband to use one properly - not sure I could trust adult kids and their friends / partners when they visit / stay over.
I've seen too many soiled specimens over the years.. 😷

Dagnabit · 27/01/2017 23:03

Well this is all a bit shit...

I'm another anti loo brush...the ones at work have shitty toilet bits on them There's a young, very well groomed woman at work, luckily works on another floor now but she always leaves a crappy stench after visiting the loo and the aftermath of skid marks and floaters. Dirty bitch...

AbernathysFringe · 27/01/2017 23:05

For the people whose parents never taught them how to use a loo brush:
Step 1, Scrub off what didn't go after you flushed.
Step 2. Flush again over the brush once or twice
Step 3. Bleach the almighty heck out of the loo and loo brush.
Step 4. Flush again over the brush.
Step 5. Check to see if brush is clean. If not bin it and ffs don't just put it back in holder.
I have a relative who cleans at a very exclusive private school. You wouldn't believe the filth they leave, in grafitti form too.

Gymnopedies · 27/01/2017 23:06

Just flush the loo, then use the toilet brush then rince the brush under a second flush and repeat as necessary. When cleaning the loo, desinfect the brush at the same time and voila.

Closing the toilet lid before flushing is supposed to stop aerosol of loo water so it's not inhaled by the person flushing.

tobee · 27/01/2017 23:10

The bloke in Greta's illustration seems to be able yo use the loo without taking his trousers down. Which is a good trick if you can do it.

What you do is you flush, use the brush, then flush again while holding the brush bristles under the resulting flow. Thus cleaning said brush. Simples!
