AIBU to expect hold ups to stay up?

I've tried a few brands now and every single one, without exception, ends up round my knees within an hour or two. Does anyone know of any that actually stay up?

PS Sadly this is certainly NOT because my thighs are like twigs - quite the opposite Blush

Tesco Ines are great.

helenfagain · 27/01/2017 17:32

Ones, not Ines!

trinity0097 · 27/01/2017 17:33

Why not just wear tights?!

IlPorcupinoNilSodomyEst · 27/01/2017 17:33

I've always found they pull the fine hairs on my legs out in an excruciating manner on the way down, too! (Outs self as not waxing to waist height).

SingingInTheRainstorm · 27/01/2017 17:34

I think it is hit and miss. Most swear by M&S, I've worn M&S for years, but for a wedding got a pair from Debenhams, slightly more expensive, but felt a lot more secure and the 'hold up' part was more substantial.

OooohHorlicks · 27/01/2017 17:35

No YANBU but it was a long search for me. Wolford do some lovely ones that look pretty AND stay up but for almost £30 a pair I couldn't justify it.

John Lewis do some warm, thick 60 denier for £8. They wash well and I've not yet had a disaster. Last few pairs saw me through a whole year.

No moisturiser whatsoever. Once went out in broad daylight on a date wearing them with moisturiser and had to walk along holding them up. OMG it was so embarrassing

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 27/01/2017 17:38

It's a matter of engineering.

Consider the shape of your legs. Tapered downward they are a natural shape for holdups to fall down. The only way to keep them up is a very sticky band of something like silicone. But is if is sticky enough it will make your skin sweat. If it allows the skin to breath it won't stick then they will fall down.

Not using body lotion or anything that coats the skin with any sort of emulsified oil will assist the hold ups to hold up.. but that may in turn aggravate dry skin.

Suspender belt?

Schwifty · 27/01/2017 18:45

Primark! I swear by them and they last ages too if you wash them carefully.

I've found the more expensive brands - Fogal and Wolford - were great. Really deep band of lace at the top gave more grip than the ones with a narrow band at the top.

They are expensive but ime they do last.

IWantATardis · 27/01/2017 18:55

The only workable solution I found for this was suspender belt and stockings.

Esspee · 27/01/2017 19:04

Can't wear tights and hold ups don't work for me either. Have worn stockings with suspenders on a few occasions but mostly I just go bare legs in summer, trousers in winter.

Talith · 27/01/2017 19:12

Get them a size smaller. I am size 12/14 -- 5 foot 7 and about 10 stone. You would think this equates to medium or large. I opt for small and they stay up. Else get a good old fashioned suspender belt. Just attach it on the nylon not the fancy topping if you don't have stockings.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 27/01/2017 19:35

Always Wolfords here, never had any bother with them in about 25 years, every forray into cheaper brands has resulted in 'interesting' wardrobe malfunctions.

Pricey but they do last.

hefzi · 27/01/2017 20:10

Stockings HQ used to do a hold up glue stick thing : I don't know if you're chubby of thigh, as I am, but I find the glue thing solves the slithering down issue completely.

ShoesieQ · 28/01/2017 09:11

Thank you lovely MNers for giving me hope! FYI I haven't bothered with them for years, but am getting married in March and thought I'd give them another go Smile. And am not sure a suspender belt will work with the dress.

PS Girlwhowearsglasses - I did exactly the same thing - but at a job interview. That included a full tour of the site Blush

Gave up with them. Guess the clue is in the name...hold ups, not stay ups!

EchidnasPhone · 28/01/2017 10:37

Soap! Rub a tiny bit of soap on the silicone sticky bit, bar soap is better, and they don't fall down.

RandomWordsandaNumber5 · 28/01/2017 10:40

Wouldn't wear any but Wolfords. They are expensive but will last if you take care of them and they never fall down. Well worth the money.

HeCantBeSerious · 28/01/2017 10:40

I use the glue mentioned above. Got it from Amazon.

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 28/01/2017 10:53

I use tescos, have been washing and wearing daily the same 5 pairs for around 2 years now and still going strong. I second going down a size, am a medium dress size but buy hold ups in small.

MoonGeek · 28/01/2017 11:27

Wolford. They last and last if you take care of them. Worth the money.

Stoneagemum · 28/01/2017 11:47

A spritz of hair spray on your thigh where the silicone sits works for me
