AIBU to ask how much you spend a month on groceries?

I'm trying to budget for an incoming mat leave/new baby and don't know if I'm budgeting too much for groceries. I currently spend around £500 a month (in London) on 2 adults, 1 toddler and 2 cats. Is that about normal or do you think I could do it much cheaper? Would love to know how much everyone else spends on groceries for context...

500 a month for two adults, one child and one baby. It includes work lunches for DH (made at home) and fancy meals to cook for dh and me to have on Saturdays, I also meal plan.

early30smum · 28/01/2017 22:24

About £600 a month for 2 adults and 2 kids including toiletries, any booze, cleaning products etc.

noeffingidea · 28/01/2017 22:29

At the moment its about £25/week for myself and my daughter who is 16. Shop at Sainsburys (unfortunately), Poundland, Aldis and Tescos. Trying to avoid Sainsburys because the prices are getting ridiculous.

TobiiRheaStarr · 28/01/2017 23:03

£150 a month on 4 adults and 3 kids with 2 extra kids alternate weekends.

TobiiRheaStarr · 28/01/2017 23:04

sorry 5 adults, 3 kids, 2 extra alternate weekends. can't count!

dotdotdotmustdash · 29/01/2017 00:08

I couldn't have answered this question a few weeks ago as I shopped randomly and never added it up. Recently, since the loss of my FIL, I've started taking MIL shopping once and a week and I've discovered that I spend (for 3 adults and 2 dogs) almost exactly £100pw. This includes 6 evening meals (takeaway one night) and about 8 lunches, along with toiletries and treats for the dogs. I'm pretty happy about that figure.

Lynnm63 · 29/01/2017 01:09

£450-£500 a month. 5 of us, two adults and 3 dc all teenagers and a dog. I shop in ALDI, fresh bread from Tesco no Lidl here unfortunately, home bargains for toiletries, loo roll and cleaning stuff and meat from a good local butcher. That includes dog food at 14 months she is still on junior food bought online every 2 months it works out £35 a month.
We meal plan, shop with a list and cook from scratch. Very little is wasted.
We have a takeaway maybe once a month and eat out approx once every 6 weeks.

You feed 7-9 people on £5 a day? How is that even possible?! That's way less than £1 per person per day for 3 meals and snacks etc.

BeastofCraggyIsland · 29/01/2017 01:40

I just saw your other post, 8-10 people, that's 50-60p each per day. Seriously, how??

Mindtrope · 29/01/2017 07:32

I don't actually know.

OH does a lot of shopping at weekends, and loves quirky food, so probably spends more than we need to, my weekday shopping tends to be quite basic. So I have no idea how much we spend in a month,
£200? £400? Somewhere in between possibly.

Afreshstartplease · 29/01/2017 07:35

We spend between 500-600 a month

Two adults three children and a baby

This includes nappies, formula, cleaning products etc

NickyEds · 29/01/2017 07:58

Tobii I'm guessing that's a typo and £150a week?

MadamMooMoo · 29/01/2017 08:00

£200-230 pcm on shop. This is all food, bath prodcuts, cleaning products etc for 2 grown ups, 1 child, 1 baby.

EmeraldScorn · 29/01/2017 08:53

This week -

M&S on Monday was £60 something.
Tesco's on Thursday was £87 something.
Butchers on Thursday was £20.

That's a typical week for 2 of us (both adults) but it does not include alcohol or takeaways. I would love to cut back on food spending but to be honest I can't be bothered with meal planning because then I'd feel tied down to set menus every day but what if I decide I want steak and not the chicken that the meal plan was prepared for? It just seems too restricted, so I'm trying to think up other ways of spending less on food.

TeaAndBisquits · 29/01/2017 09:18

We spend about £220/250 a month.
It would be slightly more if we could, but we're running a tight budget at the moment.

We're a family of 4, two adults, a preschooler and a primary school goer.

We eat well, but don't have as many treats or eating/buying things on a whim as I'd like.

Silentplikebath · 29/01/2017 10:00

I spend about £500 per month with just me, DH and 1 cat. I'm disabled and DH works long hours and also isn't well so we rely on ready prepared fruit, veg, salad, jars of sauce (unpopular on MN!) as well as frozen or chilled ready meals. We rarely eat out or have takeaways and have all our shopping which includes all toiletries, OTC medicines, stationery and occasional treats delivered at home. If I was fit and well I know I could cut the shopping bill down to around £300 but it's not going to happen until Aldi and Lidl start doing home deliveries.

Pooppoopboogie · 29/01/2017 10:29

£600 per month 🤔

2 adults (both work from home so lunches included), 1 school age, 1 preschool and a dog.

£100 per week on weekly shop (Aldi or Asda) then always top ups during week.

I would really love to save money on food!!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/01/2017 12:33

About £600 a month, for four, occasionally five, adults and one child. Includes cleaning stuff, toiletries and all meals including lunches. That's £20 a day and we eat lots of meat, fish, fruit and veg.

PrettyDarnQuick · 29/01/2017 12:45

Approx. £550 per month for 2 adults, mahoosive teen and two 9year old twins.

Waitrose for most stuff unless I know an item is significantly cheaper in Tesco.

PrettyDarnQuick · 29/01/2017 12:46

That doesn't include school lunches though 🤔

SusanneLinder · 29/01/2017 13:04

Well depends when and how you shop and if you are willing to make changes. We don't have Ocado up here but have looked online and find their prices ridiculous.
I work full time, but try to make use of my slow cooker. I shop in Aldi and Morrisons. There are 4 adults here and two dogs and can get my shopping to about £70-80 a week.

wheezles · 29/01/2017 13:08

Two adults, 1 child, about £400 a month from Ocado.

No booze. Not a lot of meat. Could deffo do it cheaper, but we're time poor so happy with this. It covers all toiletries and household stuff too though.

Piratefairy78 · 29/01/2017 13:14

We average £500 a month, plus about £70-£80 for school dinners 2/3 times a week. That's for 2 adults and 3 DC and includes all food, cleaning products and toiletries. Possibly also the odd DVD if bought at Tesco.

SusanneLinder · 29/01/2017 13:16

I do meal plan, but I dont make it rigid, nor does it have to be. It's based round what we are doing. I don't make it so tight that Tues is spag bol for example and no deviation. We decide the night before what is for next days dinner.

grumpysquash3 · 29/01/2017 13:35

Like a few pp have said, I'm always amazed at how little some people manage to spend.

I spend about £130 per week in Tesco (no alcohol, includes toiletries and cleaning stuff). So that's about £550 per month for two adults and 3 teens/tweens. But in addition, the two teens buy lunch at school which works out to about £3.50 per day each and DS2 has school dinner on Fridays. So that adds on about another £150.

DH likes to buy nice meat from the butcher and would probably spend another £50 per month.

That adds up to about £750 which is loads.
