To think the school are ignoring a bloody threadworm epidemic

DD has them again Angry

Older DD and DS both also had them when they were using the early years toilets. Never caught them again once they moved to KS2 toilets.

Nobody else in the house has them or has caught them. If it was a case of her catching them repeatedly from home someone else in the family would have them surely?

She only ever catches them during school terms. This is the 6 time in 18 mths Angry

So now the whole house needs bleaching again, bedding, teddies everything needs to go through a hot wash. I know the drill off by heart.

The school flatly refused to send a letter out. I've had kids at the school for over 8 years and there has never been one letter about threadworms. Over a thousands about bloody nits though.

Receptionist looked disgusted when I went in to ask them again to send a letter out. I explained what advice I had been given, that in schools things like playdough are massive harbingers of eggs etc, toilets need a deep clean with bleach, surfaces need deep cleaning. Again it's been ignored. Apparently nobody else has said their children have them.

I did notice that nit letters were issued with regularity in the bookbags, accompanied by instructions for how to check for them and treat them, but never a letter for threadworms did we have, even though I approached a staff member to say I'd had to give mine Ovex when it first happened.

I just got a confused stare and a mutter that she'd have to check guidelines. Evidently those guidelines were 'don't tell anyone'.

Are you treating the whole family every time your DD gets them?

Blardythreadworms · 27/01/2017 17:04

I don't think the school is 'ignoring an epidemic' - they've only got your word for it that there is one. You're guessing that your kids are getting it from the school toilets and you're guessing that loads of other kids have got it - you don't actually have any proof.

I totally understand why you've reached that relatively likely conclusion - but schools can't really send out letters based on one parent's guesswork.

As for people suggesting that the school be closed down for a couple of days, that would be a huge overreaction to an outbreak of a very common, very easily treatable childhood condition. Yes, it's a bit rotten, but it's not the end of the world.

Well done OP!!! Success!!!

OK maybe I overreacted with the school needs to shut down, but I just think its unacceptable. They need to tackle the issue head on and educate other parents. But it seems like they are so that's good.
