To think nobody sticks to the speedboat limit?

I'm a relatively new driver and have had a car less than a month. I always drive at the speed limit. However this seems to annoy most people and I'm constantly being over taken (quite dangerously) by people who want to go 40 in a 30 mile zone. I was genuinely surprised by how many people do this. Do people actually drive at the speed limits or do they just wait until there are cameras around?

Oh dear obviously that wasn't speedboat but just speed.

I think the vast majority of people do however, slow drivers especially on motorways are equally as dangerous as fast drivers

Breaking the limit is illegal, however big your car, however late you are. Drive your own car legally and safely. If you have a fuckwit astern do the same. They will overtake eventually and you can laugh at them at the next roundabout.

Some cars reach pick up their speed much faster than others so whilst you could just be reaching 30 mph another car could be established at that speed. This will make them appear to be going faster than you but in reality they're not.
Also if you find that this happens all the time, perhaps your speedometer is off

I have always considered myself a careful driver and one who sticks to speed limits, however I got pulled over between Christmas and New year for doing 42 in a 30. I was really annoyed with myself, I used to always stick to 30 and had so many drivers tailgate me and overtake that I started to increase on roads I felt I knew. It was one of those tricky roads that goes from 60 to 30 then 60 again through a 'village' which is essentially houses either side of a road so the majority of people do 40-50 through there. I know though regardless of what I think the speed limit should be it is there for a reason and I was in the wrong.
Since then however I have been super careful, new driver careful and realised how often I have been exceeding without realising, even maintaining 60 it often creeps up and I am now slowing down.
As a new driver you are super aware of everything you are doing, which is great, not everyone else is. I say keep doing what you are doing and ignore those who speed, do not increase your speed for them or feel any pressure to

I recently did speed awareness course.
I didnt surprise me that 60% of people in the room didnt know the national speed limit for a single carriageway. Half thought it was slower than it was.
The general lack of knowledge was pretty poor. Yes i got caught speed but a least i knew i was!

The only time I have been stopped for speeding was by the river police in a speed boat.

wherearemymarbles Can I ask how long between being caught speeding did you get the letter about the speed awareness? The policeman advised me I was likely to get a speed awareness as opposed to points and a fine, but it was almost a month ago and i've no idea how long these things take to be decided/sent out

I got caught by a mobile camera on a dc. The nip arrived in about a week and i think i heard officially about 3 or 4 weeks after that.

Can can look up the thresholds online and if you are within them you are v v liekely to get a course.

Accepted max speed to be considered for a coruze is
42 in a 30, 53/40, 64/50, 75/60, 86/70

Yeah, the policeman was really nice and explained any faster and it would be points and a fine but I might get lucky with a course. I was horrified and I think he knew I was sorry even without a punishment, he also looked quite relieved I wasn't arguing like the car driver they pulled over before me and was still there!!
I'll give it another 2 weeks before calling and chasing, considering it was the Christmas period and the police are usually out in force to deter drink drivers so they may just be busy.

I do in excess of the limit on a motorway, usually 80/85 if the conditions allow, everywhere else I stick to the limits.

The only boats I've ever driven have been narrowboats - I couldn't have broken the speed limit if I'd tried! (Irrelevant)

I do wonder how many people don't even realise they are speeding.

I'd lose my job if I got caught speeding or lost my license.
