Just opened the door to a man in a UPS uniform (couldn't see van). Mate behind not in uniform but poss id.

He was holding a parcel, said was cosmetics from Latvia had a different name but my address. Said it needed £140 to be delivered.

Do they really ask for money at the door? It seemed so weird, he pushed a bit but then smiled and said they'd send back when I insisted twice

We are not Latvian and have no links, just a favour to a neighbour to use drive space whilst we have no car. Make sure house look occupied.

Waiting on ups response before telling police, in case some genuine mix up and I waste their time

Definately sounds dodgy Sad

user1485202674 · 23/01/2017 20:24

Sounds very odd.

I did see on a website yesterday the option to pay by card/PayPal or cash on delivery. The first time I had ever seen that option anywhere, it was on nanolash.co.uk, very odd

Natsku · 23/01/2017 20:29

Very dodgy, definitely sounds like a scam.

Can't be trusting people dressed as UPS delivers - a family member had "UPS" come to the door, was actually police to arrest him, bloody cheeky!

tatty1010 · 23/01/2017 20:37

Sounds very odd.
Could it possibly have been a mix up? Maybe you could ask your neighbours if they are expecting a delivery from Latvia?

Helloitsme87 · 23/01/2017 20:44

Definite scam.
OP, were you expecting a parcel from Latvia? If not then report! There's no mix up. Why would there be 2 of them.

TrinityForce · 23/01/2017 20:50

I do think this is dodgy - but would like to point out it's common in some EU countries (Belgium is my specific experience) to pay for the delivery at the door. Not to the excess of £140 but I've paid £40 on the door a few times - even when goods are from inside the EU.

Sara107 · 23/01/2017 21:03

Scam! Delivery drivers do not arrive on foot.

confuugled1 · 23/01/2017 21:33

I've read of a scam on here where you get sent a parcel to the right address but wrong name and they pressure you to accept it, then they later come around to collect it, claiming it was wrongly addressed and they are Mr XXX, 123 Other Road, Your Town, whereas it's been sent to Mr XXX, 123 Your Road, Your Town (and you are Mr YYY).

Then it seemed to go in various directions - either somebody comes to collect it and it's something like drugs that they didn't want sent to themselves. Or they come and get it then somebody else comes to get it and threatens you as it was theirs, not the other person that took it and thus you need to refund them to make up for their loss of the parcel. And so on - definitely one to avoid taking in.

Next time - if you can get snap of them on your phone without them seeing you, bet the police would be pleased to see who it is...

I provided my address but obviously no tracking number, this was the reply:

Thank you for your e-mail.

I understand if you feel that it is unusual that the driver asked for a payment upon delivery.

Usually this happens when the shipment has a duty and tax or a brokerage fee applied to the shipment.

I understand that the package was not attention to your name. I am more than happy to check this information, as well as the payment that was asked by the driver. Please provide the tracking number, in case you have it.

Kind Regards,

Gloria Gonzales

I'm sure I've seen this scam on a Facebook warning, plus the fact he had a mate with him? Seem very suss to me and if it's not addressed to you?! I'd be very weary regardless of what UPS said in their mail

Jaxhog · 24/01/2017 17:47

If it was genuine, they would have given you a card with a ref/tracking number on it. Otherwise, how would they think you could pay and have it redelivered?

A scam, methinks.

Katherine2626 · 24/01/2017 17:48

I heard about this scam a few days ago - there is another too where you get sent stuff you haven't ordered and then get an invoice later.

tempester28 · 24/01/2017 17:48

I ordered from biovea and opted for pay on delivery and actually paid the delivery driver. (I think that yes it was UPS) However obviously I ordered it and was expecting the charge! Is it possible that your friend ordered it to be delivered to your address? although big ouch if she forgot to leave you the £140 or let you know about it

Lynnm63 · 24/01/2017 17:53

I'd report it to the police. I'm sure they'd rather this was reported and it wasn't a scam than to have fraudsters scamming your area. Sounds dodgy to me with two delivery men and no van. Ups park across my drive when they deliver to me. Time is money.

DesolateWaist · 24/01/2017 17:58

No way would they be on foot.
UPS drivers park as close as they can leap out, deliver and then off again. They have sliding doors on the vans to speed things up. Walking that far to the van would be madness.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 24/01/2017 18:14

Tell Neighbourhood Watch as well, if you have one. This has scam written all over it.

Backt0Black · 24/01/2017 18:16

Yes I've had this. WAS genuine. Bought a watch from a US retailer, thrilled at it being £100 less when I ordered it. Far less effing thrilled at being asked for £60+ import duty on my doorstep. That combined with the P&P cost and the three week wait for delivery pretty much negated the saving.

Guy arrived on foot (thought with little hand held delivery dress) as our courtyard was tricky for van access.

Anyway. diff name, so not your parcel, so no issue I guess.

Backt0Black · 24/01/2017 18:17

gah - little hand held delivery DEVICE. not dress?!?!?!?

GabsAlot · 24/01/2017 18:19

they sound bothered not

id report to the police doesnt sound right at all

DagenhamRoundhouse · 24/01/2017 18:19

Little hand held delivery dress? Can you get them in Zara? Wink

Sammyislost · 24/01/2017 18:29

I agree, report it!

pollymere · 24/01/2017 18:33

It could be import fees...I once had DHL send me an invoice for charges after I'd received a parcel and I pointed out that I had no agreement with them. If it's genuine, you'd be expecting it so very likely to be a scam.

38cody · 24/01/2017 18:33

Let police know too - this is essential

gemma19846 · 24/01/2017 18:49

Royal mail NEVER ask for money at the door so the post above saying the PO do is wrong. They ask for money to SEND it ofcourse, you are paying for a service but they never charge you to recieve a parcel! The only time you will have to pay extra is if the sender didnt pay enough postage. This sounds very dodgy and i would ring the police asap!
