To ask, if you have an old house and wooden floors, how often do you mop?

And do you vacuum or sweep?

We're newly installed in this house and love it but it gets so dirty! I hate carpets so was happy that the house was full of nothing but original floorboards but my God! I mop daily and each time the water's gross!

I have been vacuuming but swept instead today...what's best?

I feel like they're never clean.

I also used method cleaner & didn't wet mop. I found it wasn't good for the floorboards. It also sounds like they need resealing which I would definitely do if you've been wet mopping. I have to vacuum everyday but have a hand held dyson & would wipe up any spills straight away but only clean once a week. Method cleaner is also excellent on my old wooden table.

They're quite worn.

An old wooden floor needs to be nourished; use something like Danish oil. organoil.com.au/NEW%20Olde%20Style%20Danish%20Oil.pdf

Original floorboards in hallway and sitting room, waxed. I hoover about once a week but only mop about once a month ( if that) I have a dog and plenty of people in and out but we tend to take off grubby boots etc. House looks and smells clean I think. I use Ecover all purpose for the cleaning

A few times a week.

I also pop my mop head in the washing machine on a hot wash to make sure it's nice and clean!

I've never mopped ours. (Been here years)
I vacuum, and, if something gets spilled, I get a cloth and clean it with that.

Werkzallhourz · 23/01/2017 11:27

Our floors are varnished so I vac once a week and mop once a fortnight. We don't wear shoes in the house.

If mop wooden floors you will rot the surely.

Lalunya85 · 23/01/2017 11:36

What's the finish on your wood? Is it varnish or wax or something else?

We sanded ours down when we moved in and then treated with hardwax oil. Very easy to apply and you can reapply in spots as needed. There's a special floor Cleanser for hardwax oil which closes the wood nicely. We use that every week and just hoover in between where necessary.

Also, just ask yourself how clean do floors really HAVE to be? Grin

First rule in our house, no outside shoes on in the house. You can wear indoor shoes or slippers or sock feet, but not outside dirt/dogshit/grass and stuff coming in.
We sweep every day, swiffer once a week, but wipe any spots you see as they happen.
