Going skiing at half term, in Scotland

DH thinks there might be snow. I doubt it- having grown up there and we went one new year and it snowed one day then rained. I think we will be getting the children's hopes up for nothing.

Not looking good for skiing in Scotland atm. The other thing about Scottish skiing is that wind can shut the slopes fairly often.

DP is from the Highlands and he said Glen Co is the most likely to have snow Smile

Ah thanks, maybe it was Nevis we wine tot with the Gondola, not sure. It was near Fort William anyway.

So France can be cheaper? I have had a look and they definitely have snow, but it added up to at least a grand, and that is with driving there.

A grand for a week family skiing mid term is dirt cheap. We spend more than that at Aviemore with car ferry, accommodation , passes, ski hire etc. The Lecht is my favourite for a couple of days with small kids, feels very safe and almost always open cos not so windy. This thread really making me want to go back this year.

I used to ski in Scotland (I used to ski anywhere before I had children) but it was always last minute, when snow came. We either camped (Shock) and also had friends in Fort Bill, so last minute was easy to arrange.

Skiing in Europe is always nicer than Scotland (but Canada is best).

LovelyBath77 · 23/01/2017 14:15

Ah, yes last time we shared a large cottage with brother's family so was around £300 for a week for our family of four, I can see with loft passes etc it would add up though.

Canada sounds amazing, Norway also looks wonderful (but expensive). DS is going skiing with school to USA and it is expensive (now thinking should have had a week for the whole family in France for less than the lost of that) but USA was their only option.

Cleebope it says online the Lecht is the only one open so far and that is because they have moved snow to make it happen. I grew up as a child around that area and would be nice to go back. We might be going to Snowdonia for a week now though (no snow, but cosy cottage and walks)

My dh took the boys skiing in Aviemore last February half term. They got 4 days skiing out of it. Other days slopes were shut due to high winds etc. This year they are going to France . It's going to be a lot more expensive!

LovelyBath77 · 23/01/2017 17:05

ooh I like the idea of him taking them, sounds good! I'm not sure I'd trust him on his own with the little one and the bigger one though- maybe when they are bit older.

Are you committed to Scotland already? If you are very keen to ski, Bulgaria, Slovenia, or even the smaller resorts in Italy would provide much better budget ski holiday options than Scotland.

ArialAnna · 23/01/2017 18:11

Ah right, just saw your other post. Yes, it's going to be hard to go anywhere in Europe for a total of £300.

Moodykat · 30/01/2017 16:15

I was watching your thread as we are also going to Scotland in half term and hoping to ski! There has been some snow but not much yet. The man from ski school said that there is more forecast this weekend and then next week so I am crossing my fingers hard! Even if we can't ski, DS's would be gutted if there wasn't any snow to sledge!

IveAlreadyPaid · 30/01/2017 16:22

Worst season for ages at the Scottish resorts... But you never know that might change.

Conditions at the Lecht were lovely yesterday. They have a great committed team who will work hard to open when possible.

I have a cairngorm season pass - only one day on it this season so far (very short and wet day it was too and only one run open). This time last year I think I had done about 10 days!

LovelyBath77 · 01/02/2017 10:10

We're off to Snowdonia now, not for skiing or snow, but to a copy cottage and walks. It does look forecast for a cold February though.
