I've been getting hugely into decluttering and keeping tidy since the new year. I've been looking on websites and in magazines for tips advice and most of it is unmitigated tripe that makes life harder rather than easier.

So I'm turning to you vipers for your non-crap tips for keeping on top of shit.

I've got three to start us off.

Clean the shower while you're in it. Gamechanger. Saves masses of time.

Storing duvet sets inside their pillow case. I was sceptical about this one but with four beds in the house it has a)made my linen cupboard tidier and b)means no more rummaging.

Using the big IKEA bags as laundry bags. They are just the right size for a load of washing in a standard machine and you can fold them up and put them away tidily instead of having plastic baskets hanging around.

Aibu to think you lot will have loads more?

I don't get the roll of bin bags still attached in the bottom of the bin. Is it just me who gets 'seepage' at the bottom of the bin? Don't all the binbags get all gross and covered in bin juice?

Happy to be enlightened from a wise MN -er

Just seen on Pinterest two great ideas I will be stealing- 1) dowel rods inside the kitchen cupboard to hold the rolls of bin bags, and inside food cupboards to hold rolls of cling film and tinfoil. 2) a little flip over sign on the dishwasher saying clean/dirty held on with a command hook,

EZA15 · 06/02/2017 21:24

averagebear1983 I thought that about the bin bags too. The bedroom bin is different but the kitchen bin? No freaking way

ReallyDownxxxx · 06/02/2017 23:04

I have a waste disposal unit which is where most leftovers and foodcrape goes.

I rinse out cartoons etc before putting in the bin and prebag dripping meat wrappers.

So no seepage at all.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/02/2017 06:37

Good grief. No offence but that's an ecological nightmare- you put a plastic bag around a plastic meat wrapper simply to bin it???? Please don't do that
We recycle all plastic meat containers here, so they don't go in the bin anyway, but there still is, always, a fine film of general 'bin-ness' that gathers at the bottom of the bin. My only tip for that is to switch to a smaller bin that can easily be wiped and dried. Since doing that, I no longer have to fill the bin up with soapy water, tip out, leave to dry etc, and can wipe it out without having to put my head right down into the bin!

Idefix · 07/02/2017 10:03

Just watched the housekeeper doing it again and this is a clinical waste bin...I really have little to do but watch these little moments Grin

Fwiiw they are thick bin bags not flimsy ones...but attitude to clinical waste is so different from uk. Everything goes in...obviously not worried about billing.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/02/2017 12:22

I'm just green with envy that you have a housekeeper idefix
In my house, I am the housekeeper. Sigh.....

Lweji · 07/02/2017 15:13

It's the hospital housekeeper, not Idefix's house. :) (see above)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/02/2017 16:32

Oh I see! Sorry, very slow on the uptake here!! I suppose if you empty the bins several times a day as I'm sure they do in hospitals, there's no time for leakage!

Idefix · 07/02/2017 17:04

Hehe, sorry for any misleading bear I am very much the housekeeper too (ordinarily).

But am thinking I might try this at home to see...

ChishandFips33 · 07/02/2017 20:46

For the bin bags; would opening them up then putting one inside the other (several times) get round the seepage issue - it would just seep in to the next bag iyswim

Too much faff on for saving a few seconds on the changeover

I'd settle for DH just putting a new bag back in (and the lid back on) or taking the empty bathroom bin back upstairs when he's emptied it (bins are 'his' jobs here!)

Wondermoomin · 09/02/2017 10:18

This will make me sound like a feckin' idiot 😂...

But when you've got a tip that says "put half a cup of white distilled vinegar in the drum with your usual load..." do you have to put it in a "receptacle" 😂 as you do when using those in-drum gels and liquids that come with a little cup? Or do you just pour it in on the laundry?

Thank you! 😳

Sgtmajormummy · 09/02/2017 14:20

Wondermoomin
Better to pour it into the empty drum first, so it falls straight through the holes in the drum and doesn't stain your clothes. That way it starts mixing with the water at the bottom of the machine as it pumps in.

ElfrideSwancourt · 13/02/2017 16:12

Just wanted to say thanks ladies for all the amazing tips! I have zoflora everywhere; I have Kondo-ed all my clothes & I think I have finally cracked the pairing socks issue by washing and tumble drying them in a laundry net SmileI've just bought some more so I can put them on laundry baskets so I don't have to fish out all the socks. When my depression gets bad unpaired socks cause me immense stress. Flowersto all you lovely ladies of Mumsnet.

nonameinspiration · 14/02/2017 07:13

Elf that's really great. I don't underestimate how Ines environment affects mental health it sure does for me! Kondoing my house had a Jude impact on feeling in control and on top of things Grin

unlucky83 · 18/02/2017 00:17

A big thank you to Idbemonica1 for this
Grey cutlery marks can be removed from plates and dishes by rubbing them with bar keepers friend. Found this out just as I was planning to buy a new set, the old set came up good as new.
I also was thinking of buying new crockery - white ours were really bad - I would be embarrassed to give them to eg DDs friends...
So today I got round to buying some barkeepers friend and giving it a go - and it was fantastic.
Photos don't do the transformation justice really - and I didn't think to do it until I was on the last bowl ...but it really is a wow....
And I had tried lots of thing before...

Does anyone have any tips for getting rid of a musty smell in a wardrobe please? It's in built, ex-council house so literally built in the wall. I've got my "when I lose weight" clothes in there...I will get rid of them, but my daughter's dresses and coats are in there and it smells.

Is there anything I can do apart from wash the clothes all the time?

Thanks.

ChishandFips33 · 18/02/2017 17:23

Sprinkle Bicarbonate of soda in the bottom or hang in muslin bags or wash it out with sugar soap?

user1484394242 · 18/02/2017 18:49

Put a few drops of essential oils on the floor cloth before steaming the floors. I use citronella, the smell stays for a few days

Idbemonica1 · 18/02/2017 21:42

Thanks unlucky83 😉
