To not mention the bankruptcy

Ok so a real inner turmoil here! I am applying for a job internally for a company I've worked with for about 10 years. As part of it there is an independent check done and I believe they will ask have i ever been bankrupt. It was more than 6 years ago and doesnt show anywhere now but I am nor sure whether to just wing it and not mention it. I still don't have a great credit score which by itself could probably be overlooked by if i chuck in the bankruptcy too (even though it was years ago) i am not sure i would pass the test. Problem is if i get the job it would be plastered everywhere and everyone would congratulate me BEFORE i would then go through all this internal checking. What shall i do?!

Ilovesooty, it stays on the insolvency register for a year and three months. Your credit record for six years and the London Gazette forever.

OP just as an aside have you checked all three of the main credit reference agencies and have they recorded the debts defaults correctly? Have the ones included in your bankruptcy now dropped off all the files?

I'd also caution that given its recorded in the archives of the Gazette and (depending on how long ago) the local paper for time immemorial just be honest and never underestimate the spite of some people. I remember someone telling me that a woman's son's bankruptcy was spotted in the local paper and somebody blew up a photocopy and put it on the staff notice board where she worked. Her son had long left home and the bankruptcy was nothing to do with her, but someone chose to shame her over it. Someone might well be enough of a cunt to find out and use it against you in the future if you lie. If you don't lie then you have nothing to worry about.

IAmALeafOnTheWindWatchHowISoar you are right I did put the wrong thing down, I did mean the London gazette. It still means a permanent checkable record is kept.

Thanks for that information Leaf - I'm on sounder ground with disclosure of offences! Smile

The reason security checks are done are to assess the persons honesty and integrity - if you lie, you'd be putting all the nails in your professional coffin forever.

As mentioned, go to HR and then be honest.

No worries. It used to be my area of speciality until I moved abtoad but I'm a little rusty in places now as there has been some changes recently.

Thanks everyone yes it is in financial services and no I've never had to declare it before in other roles so I've never lied etc. Yes my credit reports are all up to date, the bankruptcy and defaulted credit items are no longer showing, i made sure i did everything correctly over the last 6 years. My credit score is low as it just still needs building back up over time rather than anything negative being on there. I am going to do the interview then see if i get offered the job before crossing that bridge later with the background checking. My record with the company over the last 10 years is impeccable so this should mean they can overlook everything especially as it was over 6 years ago i think i am just being over cautious/worrying. Thanks all!

No, there is no rehabilitation as there is for minor criminal convictions. You must answer truthfully. If they find out later and sack you - which they will - they can and will say why on your reference, which will leave you further in the mire.

I've just searched the London Gazette and someone I know who was made bankrupt 14 years ago is still listed so you're bound to be still on there?
