To ask where I could move to to get on the property ladder??

PleasantPheasant · 21/01/2017 15:46

I need to move if I ever want to afford more than just a room in a shared house. I am single, so one income and earn less that 23,000 GBP gross. I desperately want to be able to afford a place of my own, eventually 2-3 bed. At the moment in my town I can only afford an 8 sq m room in a shared house, so you see why I need to move.
I'm quite able and willing to move, I've moved around all over the place during my 20s but I'd like to settle wherever I go next and I don't really have ties anywhere in this country so nowhere jumps out at me.
So - inspire me?! I'm looking for somewhere cheap to live, but not in a city or industrial place. I would love to live near the sea or lakes, out in the country but not too far from a small town - 30-40 mins say.
I only need a small place, bungalow, mobile home, cabin, but need to be able to afford the land it stands on, or a small cottage/bungalow/tiny house.
I'm looking to rent somewhere again for now - on my salary I can't afford to pay much over 600/month if I ever want to save. I would consider anywhere in the UK, currently looking at Wales and Scotland as they seem cheaper? AIB totally naive to think I will ever be able to move out of this grotty room??

Do factor in commuting costs in your decision too, whilst rural can be nice... a 10 minute commute vs a 40 minute one doesn't just save time but £££, not an insignificant sum either on the margins you are looking at.

SilentBatperson · 21/01/2017 22:27

Guessing OP is starting out as nurse, teacher or similar rorty, currently in somewhere expensive. If so, happy days! It's a great position to be in, having a mobile skillset and no ties. You can have such a nice quality of life on 25k in a low cost of living region.

IonaNE · 21/01/2017 22:35

Tyne and Wear, Northumberland.

BreconBeBuggered · 21/01/2017 22:38

Lots of places you can buy, as many posters have suggested, but beware of thinking of it as a ladder. Housing values in these cheaper bubbles don't rise in the same way they do in hotspots, which is fine if you're happy to stay there, but not so much if you plan moving back again.

Penguin82 · 21/01/2017 22:38

I can recommend the falkland islands! If you are a teacher, nurse or whatever you could easily get work 😀

wannabestressfree · 21/01/2017 22:44

I am a teacher penguin are they looking? :)

£25,000 1 bed flat. At the seaside. All of Lincolnshire's cheap, basically. Little work, but if you think you'd find some then quality of life is good. Very rural, very peaceful. Anywhere up the Lincs coast is cheap and there are some lovely villages.

NennyNooNoo · 21/01/2017 22:56

East Anglia. Plenty of land and fairly cheap. Driest and sunniest part of the uk. The reason why so many people retire here.

umberellaonesie · 21/01/2017 22:56

I can second the south West of Scotland. And you can place yourself near very good transport links within that price range.

downwardfacingdog · 21/01/2017 22:57

South Wales Valleys. Look for small town/ Village with train station. Good services to Cardiff esp in areas nearer the city. Grew up in a village 10m from Cardiff. Plenty of houses to rent under your budget. Left for 10yrs, but now back in Cardiff raising my family as it's such a fab place to grow up. Easy access to countryside, beaches and the city. Smile

Niskayuna · 21/01/2017 23:04

Manchester. Make a wide search area on Rightmove and set your price parameters. The tram will get you into the city for work.

Snowflake65 · 21/01/2017 23:14

Some parts of Northamptonshire are reasonable - good employment opportunities and can be in London in an hour on the train

Shared ownership £20k

Tabbylady · 21/01/2017 23:16

A good friend in Bangor (N Wales) rented a lovely 3 bed house for £400pcm and saved up enough for a deposit on a similar place within two years.

It seems like a nice bit of the world - I really enjoy visiting anyway- not far from Liverpool for "city" requirements and if you''re a health care worker you'll get a job without too much hassle too

Mrsderekshepard · 21/01/2017 23:43

Gunting I could I written your post.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 21/01/2017 23:48

West Yorkshire or villages by Durham

tommytippedup · 21/01/2017 23:52

If you want to be near the sea, go for East Yorks, not West Yorks. It's cheap, you'll get somewhere decent within easy reach of Bridlington or Scarborough with that budget. Both have all the amenities you would expect from a small town, and there's plenty of beach. You do have to be able to cope with cold and wind though Grin.

Seaham in County Durham?

Eevee77 · 22/01/2017 00:42

The north east is very cheap. I'm in a 3 bed semi about 10 mins from Sunderland & Durham. Its pristine apart from the windows needing to be replaced and it was £84,000. You can get far cheaper than that too, especially in villages around Durham.

Willyoujustbequiet · 22/01/2017 01:00

Northumberland.as others have said.

Gorgeous countryside and the most stunning beaches. Sparsely populated but Newcastle on the doorstep and very friendly locals. You get a lot for your money in many of the towns and villages.

maggiecate · 22/01/2017 01:07

Lots of reasonably priced property in Lanarkshire and commutable to Glasgow for work (or Edinburgh at a push). You could get a 1 or 2 bed flat for

maggiecate · 22/01/2017 01:09

Oh Sorry, just notice you wanted sea/hills etc. Ayrshire then, again commutable to Glasgow and some fantastic countryside. Or Fife for the East coast.

maggiecate · 22/01/2017 01:12

There you go: £40k, you can see the sea from the door, lots of lovely coastal walks, and under and under an hour to Edinburgh

Yes but do you have the deposit OP?

helpimitchy · 22/01/2017 08:12

Northumberland is a lovely place and has some of the best coastline in the uk. There are also hills and you're within easy travelling distance to the Scottish Borders, Cumbria and The Lake District as well as Newcastle.

Hexham is nice and so is Morpeth. There are plenty of outlying areas if you want somewhere more remote - look at Otterburn.

If you like moorland then look at the Durham Dales. Very easy access to Cumbria from there. Can be chilly in the winter, but we don't tend to get a lot of snow.

Housing is very affordable up here Smile
