A bit of a random one, but I'm sure someone here will know. I'm having a clear-out of old sun lotions etc, all way past their best. What's the best way to dispose of them? I want to be able to put the bottles in recycling and tipping the contents down the sink doesn't feel particularly eco-friendly. Thanks!

Is it just me, or is this tragic?! She really needs more to worry about IMO!

I was going to start a thread asking what people do with shredded paper (according to google, it's recyclable and it's a bit recyclable and it's not recyclable) but now I'm having second thoughts...

Bushymuffmum · 20/01/2017 22:55

1.tragedy:
an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe:
"a tragedy that killed 95 people"
synonyms:
disaster, calamity, catastrophe, cataclysm, misfortune, ... more

So....er, no not really op!! (Personally though I'd just water it all down and swill it down the sink, I'm sure it'd be fine)!

OP I'm with you. I wonder at the minutae that people worry about and wish I had time to post about such shite.

Bubblebathwater · 20/01/2017 23:06

wish I had time to post about such shite.

But you are though Grin

differentnameforthis · 20/01/2017 23:06

she really needs more to worry about Maybe you need more to worry about too....What I think is tragic is that this bothers you so much!

user1477282676 · 20/01/2017 23:08

Bubble Grin Noooo....commenting on other people's shite is not as pathetic!

Honestly.

elQuintoConyo · 20/01/2017 23:13

It puts the lotion on the skin.

It puts the bottle in the recycling bin.

Or something. I heard it in an Anthony Hopkins film.

WanderingTrolley1 · 20/01/2017 23:15

"... and then it puts the lotion into the basket..."

abbsisspartacus · 20/01/2017 23:41

Shredded paper gets given to the rabbit for bedding

Recycle the sun cream bottles if they have the right number on them

ALemonyPea · 20/01/2017 23:41

A while ago someone on my local FB selling was offering half used bottles of different condiments, for free naturally, as she was getting a new fridge and wanted all new ones. Can't think why nobody took her up on her offer.

MammaTJ · 21/01/2017 00:15

Trying to work out who is the saddest, the OP for her post, she person she is posting about, the people commenting on the OP posting about it or ME, for commenting on the whole lot.

That would be me then! Or maybe not, because I get the whole irony thing going on!

Anyway, the world is still turning!

BillSykesDog · 21/01/2017 02:03

I've never thought of this and I find it a really interesting question. You're going to have to tell us what the replies are now OP to make up for BU. Grin

RandomMcRandomface · 21/01/2017 02:35

I think it's a fair question.

OP wouldn't you be concerned about not recycling so many bottles that are able to be recycled if you just chuck it in the bin?

Rainmaker1 · 21/01/2017 05:51

YANBU. Just chuck the bottles and their contents in the bin. Life's too short to worry about this crap.

HerbalLey · 21/01/2017 06:50

Please don't give it to the Chemist - we aren't the local recycling centre.

FuckOffDailyMailQuitQuotingMN · 21/01/2017 09:18

What do chemists do with prescription medications? Is there a special disposal?

FuckOffDailyMailQuitQuotingMN · 21/01/2017 09:20

Well that was worded badly. I know what chemists "do" with prescription medication- they dispense them! But how do they dispose of them?
I have worried about throwing away old tablets - down the toilet seems awful and in the rubbish seems bad. But honestly who would find and take tablets out of the rubbish?

Redglitter · 21/01/2017 09:21

You have a very strange definition of what tragic is Hmm

megletthesecond · 21/01/2017 09:22

"The bin" doesn't really exist.

We need to think of it as "landfill" where it's going to sit, polluting the soil for decades and messing up the planet for years to come.

TaraCarter · 21/01/2017 09:26

So, OP, because you couldn't be arsed to do anything other than throw it in the bin, she's tragic? Grin Not sure that's how it works!

Skang · 21/01/2017 09:28

I think it's way more tragic that there are still so many people who don't give a shit about the environment to the extent they think nothing of throwing a recyclable bottle into landfill.

FineLookingHighHorse · 21/01/2017 09:28

YANBU

I wonder at how some people's minds operate when they ask such questions rather than justy chucking their manky old sunscreen in the bin.

Furthermore; I really do think that household refuse should be sorted in to recyclable/non recyclable at the local rubbish tip.
This would create new jobs, bolster the economy, save the planet and stop people with tendencies towards the mundane pondering upon such shite.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/01/2017 09:51

I'd ask what she mean't by 'way past it's best' as I've used 3 year old sunscreen this year on hot weather holidays and my very pale skin hasn't burnt.

I'd probably just use it this summer unless its all separated and decades old.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/01/2017 09:54

I feel terrible guilt about putting things in the bin when they could be used by someone, but it isn't the done thing to give things away unless they are in a 'new from John Lewis' condition these days.

Sara107 · 21/01/2017 10:05

Tipping a load of sunscreen down the drains is a very bad idea indeed. The chemicals that provide the actual SPF protection are very harmful to aquatic life ie things that live in rivers and seas, which is where the contents of your drains end up. Those chemicals are not degraded by the sewage treatment process. You may have heard about the shocking state of the world's coral reefs, many reasons for this, but the sunscreen chemicals are contributing.
So, don't sneer at this woman - you may think there are more pressing issues but we will all be worse off when our oceans are irreversibly knackered.
I would suggest checking the local council recycling tips - many take household chemicals, paint, oil etc for safe disposal.
