To be scared of chillies?

Rarely use them but chopped up a wee red one for Chinese meal this evening.
Washed hands (twice) immediately afterwards.
Have washed them several times since.

But touching tip of tongue to fingertips, and there's still some Zing there.

Now I'm scared I'll rub my eyes in my sleep and wake up screaming....

Any antidote?

milk apparently! Rub some milk into your fingertips and see if that helps.

Gloves. Disposable ones!

BrieAndChilli · 17/01/2017 22:29

No but I didn't take my contacts out one night As I had chopped chillies, woke up in the night with dry eyes and forgot so took them out. It was bloody painful, I woke the whole house up with my swearing and yelping!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 17/01/2017 22:57

Thank you.
Already in bed and can't be arsed to go down to kitchen for milk, but apparently oil is also good. Oil also in kitchen.
So slathered on oily hand cream from bedside table, then washed it off.
Less Zingy.
Might be safe to go to sleep .

Wonder should I wear gloves?
Darn. They're in the kitchen too

Yup disposable gloves.

I once nipped to the corner shop while DH was cooking tea, and came back 5 minutes later to find him completely naked and highly agitated. He'd stopped chopping the chillies and gone for a pee ...

GinAndSonic · 17/01/2017 23:01

Chilli oil doesn't dissolve in water or properly with even soap. If you "wash" your hands with oil the chilli dissolves in it then wash the oil off with washing up liquid and you should be good.

Gloves, always!! I de seeded fresh chilies with my bare hands once. Not long been in my home and learning my way around a kitchen...

It was horrific. It stayed with my hands but it happened at 7pm and by 1 am they were still burning like hell, fiery waves all over my hands and it had been going on so long I thought I was actually going to lose my mind and I wanted to go to a&e Blush I felt asleep with my hands in a bowl of milk which did little to help. (Previously slathered in creams, oil and a bowl of ice)

PinkSwimGoggles · 17/01/2017 23:04

the smaller the fiercer.
(not always, our garden grown ones are a zing lottery!)
yes to oil to wash off. full fat yoghurt at the ready in case you burn your mouth.

Back when DO and I had only been seeing each other a couple of months, he cooked me a lovely meal. Can't remember what it was exactly, but I was spicy. Think maybe his own version of a chilli beef ramen like from Wagamama? Anyways, couple hours later we are up to no good and afterwards I tell him he had gotten me all tingly Shock wasn't sore, just...different - I'm a weirdo though and kinda like pain Blush

Sorry. I couldn't help as I'm not really sure but I just wanted to share Grin

Don't put your hands in hot water. I once chopped a load of chillies, washed my hands then got in a hot bath. My fingers were on fire until 4am. Milk only worked while my fingers were actually in it. In desperation I tried a tip off the Internet which said to swab them with nail varnish remover and it worked! I was so relieved, the pain was horrendous!

I did look up why the hot water had activated the chilli but I've forgotten now. I think you'll be OK!

notuniqueenough · 17/01/2017 23:07

Although do you maybe have a sleep mask? Prevent you rubbing your eyes?

IHeartKingThistle · 17/01/2017 23:07

X post with evee - the sleep deprivation was so bad!

Eevee77 · 17/01/2017 23:37

Iheart awful isn't it! Not a mistake I'll make again. Now that you mention it I'll have most likely washed my hands with hot water afterwards too so that won't have helped ...

Alcohol works to get the chilli stuff off - worked for me when I had burning hands after making sweet chilli sauce Grin (This was after milk treatment failed)
