You need to fast for a liver scan so that your stomach is empty as when it's full it can obscure the liver meaning your sonographer wouldn't be able to see all of the liver and could potentially miss something important. They also wouldn't be able to give a full report on the scan and potentially no diagnosis as a result. You can ring up and ask for an early morning appointment which may be handy for you in the future if they gave you the first appointment of the day for example you could be scanned before 8.30am which means you'd only need to fast overnight (while your sleeping). I hope tomorrow goes well and good luck with the rest of your treatment

Hi, sonographer here. If you phone them tomorrow morning and explain your situation then they can advise. The fasting is for the gallbladder as the gallbladder contracts after eating - it is very difficult to assess if it's contracted. However, in your case, given your history, it may be the case that they're only concerned with how your liver looks and are not concerned about your gallbladder, in which case not fasting won't be the end of the world. It does depend on what they're looking for though. Speak to them first and see what they say.

I had an emergency gallbladder scan. Was asked if I'd eaten since the morning (this was 4pm) and whether I'd drunk any drinks with milk in. I think clear liquids are ok, but best to check.

MichaelSheensNextDW · 16/01/2017 22:54

I have frequent ultrasound scans of liver/gallbladder/pancreas and always have to not eat for six hours but clear fluids (nothing milky or pulpy juice) are absolutely fine.

myoriginal3 · 16/01/2017 22:56

It's specifically the liver they will be looking at. Blood counts indicate liver damage. Thank you for your replies.

I was also going to say that clear fluids should present no problem, so water and/or gin/vodka shouldn't be too problematic, so long as they're not going to do anything else to you afterwards depending on what they find.

I recently had an ultrasound for abdominal pain - they wouldn't let me even drink water because they thought it might be appendicitis (it was) but I was allowed to suck ice cubes (and was on a saline drip). I don't know how much alcohol you need to take in to prevent the DTs, but you might be able to do an alcohol/water mix ice cube or several, and suck them as you need them if there is a chance that you will need further intervention after the ultrasound - alcohol is absorbed in the mouth too, so that might work to prevent the DTs. (I ALSO don't know how much you'd need to water 40% alcohol to get it TO freeze in the first place!)

Well htt were very helpful and told me to ring111 as they advise on physical health.
I think I will be ok drinking minimal amounts.

All went well. Liver a little fatty but she said the referring doc can decide whether that's an issue or not. She said she sees it a lot. Also scanned spleen and pancreas and all good there.

Well done in trying to overcome alcoholism.

There is a thread in relationship called the rave battle bus. I suggest you join that thread as the members there have been a huge support to others.

Good luck in your recovery.

hazeyjane · 17/01/2017 18:54

Glad things look ok. Wishing you well on the road to recovery, myoriginal.

myoriginal3 · 17/01/2017 20:20

I've been reluctant to join those threads until I am sober, but I will do once I'm detoxed.
