To think driving at 30 mph in a 60 mph zone is unacceptable?

Stuck behind a driver this afternoon who was going 30, yes, 30 in a 60. Straight roads, clear weather, etc etc. No one could over take for about 10-15 mins as there were too many cars coming the other way and there ended up being a massive tailback of traffic. AIBU to think it's completely out of order to drive 30 miles below the speed limit in good conditions?

"Slow drivers are just as dangerous as speeders"

That's not actually true though is it? Statistically and harm wise. No one can argue that someone hit at 20mph will be injured in the same way they would if hit at 70mph Hmm

TheLesserOfTwoWeevils · 14/01/2017 19:51

DH used to be a Special Constable and said he would have stopped drivers going so slowly, particularly at night or around events when there's a good chance the driver could have been drinking and is trying to drive carefully.

PrimalLass · 14/01/2017 19:55

This has happened to me 3 times in the last 5 years or so- all faults with the car (gearbox, clutch, overheating, flat tyre) don't jump to conclusions, sometimes life just happens

Then put your hazards on.

Trainspotting1984 · 14/01/2017 19:56

You don't put your hazards on whilst you're driving along

SirChenjin · 14/01/2017 19:58

Yep, the Highway Code says no hazards when driving. OTOH, it is very helpful to warn other drivers that you're experiencing difficulties with your car.

Trainspotting1984 · 14/01/2017 20:00

What for 250 miles from Cornwall?ShockGrin

EatsShitAndLeaves · 14/01/2017 20:01

They are dangerous and discourteous.

Anyone who thinks they are not is just - well plain wrong Hmm.

If you cant drive at a sensible and appropriate road speed it means your driving skills are not up to par (for whatever reason - intoxication/poor skills etc). There is a strong likelihood that in the event of an issue they would not be react appropriately.

Overtaking is a high risk manoeuvre and "forcing" other road users to do this unnecessarily is not acceptable.

If there is something wrong with your car that limits your speed to that extent then "limping" home for 2 miles is one thing - but attempting to drive for 10 miles plus on 60mph roads is just damn foolish.

SirChenjin · 14/01/2017 20:02

Bloody hell - if you're driving a broken down car for 250 miles then I'd salute you Grin. No, obviously not - you'd be doing the sensible thing and driving your broken down car to the nearest garage or home.

SirChenjin · 14/01/2017 20:03

Or the nearest place that you could pull into in order to call for breakdown assistance.

Trainspotting1984 · 14/01/2017 20:04

It's not plain wrong, you're being ridiculous. What about speed limited vehicles? You just have to wait behind them and hope they'll pull over every so often. They're annoying, they're not dangerous. If they cause you to be dangerous that's your responsibility

Trainspotting1984 · 14/01/2017 20:06

Sir- the clutch was dying so I knew i could get home, just slowly Shock I Wasn't going to fix it so no point in calling RAC. Was slow though (although admittedly not slow for the whole 250 miles and on a dual carriageway/ motorway where you could at least be in the slow lane so ample opportunity to overtake)

I used to love a banger. But for reasons like this I started investing in decent cars

SirChenjin · 14/01/2017 20:07

I'm guessing that Eat is talking about your average, run of the mill, perfectly able to do 60 just chooses not to, type vehicles as opposed to the PITA speed limited vehicles

SirChenjin · 14/01/2017 20:08

Train - out of curiosity, if the police had stopped you and found you were driving a defective clutch, would you have been charged?

Trainspotting1984 · 14/01/2017 20:11

Charged with what? Of course they couldn't. Worst they could've told me to call a recovery service.

It's either dangerous to do 30mph in a 60 road or it's not. It can't only be dangerous if your vehicle is capable of going faster. That makes no sense

Sayhellopolly · 14/01/2017 20:13

It's dangerous on motorways and dual carriageways but I think less so on roads that are single lane. It's frustrating but I can't see how it's dangerous unless people are that upset they try and overtake when they shouldn't.

SirChenjin · 14/01/2017 20:15

Charged with driving a car that isn't roadworthy of course.

RobinHumphries · 14/01/2017 20:15

Charged with having an unroadworthy vehicle of course. Then if your vehicle is unroadworthy your MOT will be invalid and so will your insurance.

Trainspotting1984 · 14/01/2017 20:19

But cars break down during a journey all the time Confused a car not being road worthy is a different class of offence to just breaking down on a journey

Trainspotting1984 · 14/01/2017 20:21

A car not being roadworthy relates to a driver intentionally driving a car witHout MOT or working lights, bald tyres etc.

SirChenjin · 14/01/2017 20:21

You don't drive a car that's broken down for 250 miles FGS! If your car breaks down you call for assistance as soon as possible and you get it towed or fixed. Sounds more like you were driving a car which wouldn't have passed an MOT, and as such wasn't roadworthy. You're lucky you weren't stopped.

Trainspotting1984 · 14/01/2017 20:23

Ha, like you'd know though.

Silverdream · 14/01/2017 20:24

It's annoying but not dangerous except if other drivers are bullying them by driving up their backside or taking chances when overtaking.
I don't think it's against the law either to drive at that speed.
If that's the speed they feel safe driving at then I'd rather they stuck to that speed.

SirChenjin · 14/01/2017 20:26

Ha, and just as equally, like you'd know though.

Why didn't you call for assistance or get it towed home?

Pringle2628 · 14/01/2017 20:27

I got a minor on my driving test for driving 30 in a 60. At the time I was aware I was approaching a 30 so on best behaviour of course I slowed down very early. This was 8 years ago.

So yeah your not being unreasonable and it really annoys me when people do this, I never mind when people drive like 50 in a 60 but 30 is just a joke!

Trainspotting1984 · 14/01/2017 20:27

Well I assume you know the clutch isn't checked during an MOt and that and MOt lasts a year anyway

What would be the point in calling the RAC? I drove it home then had it picked up by the scrap man.
