To feel like TV teaches DS more than I do?

And to be embarrassed about it?

He's 2.5. I picked him up from nursery yesterday and they commented onhow good his shape recognition is - he can name triangles, squares, rectangles etc. As we left his keyworker told me to keep up the good work Hmm. Thing is, the only reason he can do that is because he watches too much Team Umizoomi where they have to solve puzzles with shapes.

Similarly there are loads of buildings/ vehicles/ animals etc that he only recognises because he's seen them on TV. He quite often comes out with something random - like pointing out a diving bell in a book - and I realise he's picked it up from fecking Paw Patrol or something.

I mean, it's good that he's learning things, but I feel like I should be teaching him more and less of his general knowledge should come from TV!

I don't think anyone on this thread is saying that tv is more educational than hands on experience. Just that, used with some judgement it can be a good medium for retain types of learning. Of course there are millions of things that can't be taught by tv, obviously.

Oops I didn't mean to leave this... Have been out all day (without DS watching any TV)! We do lots of other things, and read lots of books etc - I suppose I mean nothing seems to grab him the way TV shows do. He'll point out things from books etc but it just lacks the same enthusiasm! I think whoever said I'm just picking up on anti-screen hand wringing was probably right. I second-guess myself with lots of parenting decisions and at the moment TV is definitely one. It definitely was not a stealth boast btw! (If I wanted to boast I'd say that his social skills are excellent Wink though I'm pretty sure nursery gets the credit for that rather than me ).
