Is anyone else unable to function at all if they're tired?

I'm just shit at "managing" on less than 7 hours of sleep. If I get woken up or have a bad night, then I can't DO anything the next day.

I am dozy, grumpy and clumsy....other people seem to manage! WHy can't I?

That's a lot of turmeric but I'm willing to try it

Raaaaaah · 13/01/2017 22:34

I'm utterly rubbish at coping on no sleep which is rather a problem with a youngest DC who doesn't sleep! I look in awe at all these women who build careers, book complicated holidays and manage building projects when they have small babies. I literally manage to keep everyone fed and clean and that's my limit. I come back to life when they start sleeping.

How often do you drink the turmeric lemonade?

Aroundtheworldandback · 13/01/2017 22:40

Me. Neither my mind or body can function. I just give up and go back to bed if I can.

user1484268181 · 13/01/2017 22:40

Broken sleep of max 5 hrs/night for years now. Due to dogs and now habit most likely. When less than 3, my eyes develop a tic. No coherent speech, etc. But plough through it.

Weekdays, awake from 3am. By 4pm, my brain literally turns off. No making important decisions or sending rash emails.

Weekends are lovely. Usual wake up at 3 am. Up until 6-7. Then fall asleep and have lie in until 10am. The extra morning "nap" really helps.

crazywriter · 13/01/2017 22:55

5-7 hours and I'm fine. I can do things on 4 but only one day. I actually find I'm better if I go straight through for 36 hours than if I get less then 5 hours sleep! If I get more than 7 I'm just as badiscussed as not getting enough.

I do manage on less through if I have to. Plenty of caffeine to keep me going. When in uni I survived on caffeine and pro plus to keep myself going. Not a healthy mix and definitely not recommended.

Lifeonthefarm · 13/01/2017 22:59

I get average 1.5 hours short feed interval then usually 3-4 hour stretch plus another hour if lucky.

If I get a four hour uninterrupted stretch I'm fine. The shorter the stretch the more of a mong I am the next day.
I'm working roughly 50 hours on that running a very busy business.

People at work (no kids!!) whinge about only having 6,7,8 hours then having to work a pathetic 5 hour shift - Hmm cry me a river!!!!
.

Lifeonthefarm · 13/01/2017 23:02

I think barocca is good to for a top up of vitamins. Probably bollocks and just placeby effect but he hey. Any things worth a go when you've been on 4 hours a night for weeks.

No coffee, coke and all that crap too. Long term does you no favours.

I need at least 7 (preferably 8 hours) sleep a night . I can cope on slightly less for a night. If I go two nights on the run with less sleep than that, I don't function well at all and get really emotionally. I cry at THE most ridiculous things.

If I have a few nights with not enough sleep I feel run down and am prone to picking up sore throats and infections. I have to make sure I get an early night otherwise it's very likely I will get ill.

My husband only really needs 6 hours sleep and copes fine with less than that. He coped with the newborn phase much better than me! Thankfully our son, now 3, takes after me in the sleep department.

When I first met my husband (17 years ago), he only needed 4 hours sleep a night bloody freak

Welshmaenad · 13/01/2017 23:05

I have fibromyalgia so I'm rubbish at the best of times but when my insomnia plays up I am a zombie. I'm currently battling cellulitis and gave in and called in sick yesterday, went back to bed after the school run and slept from 9am-2.30pm! That was after not a bad nights sleep too. My BF calls me Dormouse Blush

blueshoes · 13/01/2017 23:32

My superpower is being able to 'bank' sleep. Came in handy at the start of my career in the City. It is almost part of the job description. I functioned for years with broken and little sleep as both dcs were terrible co-sleepers and woke me up every hour, sometimes 3x an hour. I was a little light-headed at times the next day but did not need to nap. Usually sleep on planes and don't get jet lagged much.

I think I inherited this from my father who is a doctor. You could plonk him anywhere and he'd fall off to sleep and then wake up and be ready to go. Must be from his medical training in a hospital where he snatched sleep when he could.

LoupGarou · 14/01/2017 00:17

It is a lot of turmeric, and it does taste somewhat...powdery, a bit like dioralyte. Stirring a lot does help, it doesn't taste nice - no point pretending otherwise, but for me it works wonders so I drink it quickly and just grin and bear it. There is a lot of info on google about it, loads of different recipes but I stick to this one as it was the recipe the nurse told me about and at the time I was desperate enough to try pretty much anything! Grin
I drink it once a day, but if we are hosting a dinner party or going out I have another glass to pep me up about an hour before we leave/guests arrive.

Chattycat78 · 14/01/2017 01:27

I've got 2 under 2 (although eldest turns 2 next week). Currently up for night feeds. Not had a full night sleep for over 7 months. I function on tea, Pepsi max and cake. Unhealthy but I don't care, it's all about survival!!!! God knows his I'm going to manage when I have to go back to work!

Chattycat78 · 14/01/2017 01:28

"God knows how" that should be!

StealthPolarBear · 14/01/2017 06:58

I was woken by the smoke alarm pipping at 4 this morning so thought I'd try this.
We have no sodding lemon juice!

StealthPolarBear · 14/01/2017 07:05

Have used fresh orange.
erm, yum. Down the hatch

Without sleep, I become increasingly depressed. I can cope with one bad night but if I don't sleep properly a second night, I get morose, tearful and hostile. It's worrying.

Scrumptiouscrumpets · 14/01/2017 07:07

Thanks LoupGarou!
Popping straight out to get some turmeric.

Namejustfornappies · 14/01/2017 07:22

I'm totally fucked. Dd1 didn't sleep more than 45 minutes at a time until she was 9 months old - then it went to 2 hour stretches until she was 3. By that time we had dd2 who also only slept in 2 hour stretches and still wakes a couple of times a night at 3.
I now have DS (5months) who is waking every hour or more for a feed then wakes all fucking happy at 5am.
I'm permanently dizzy, crave sugar, the kids end up watching too much TV on bad days as well, and I often get words wrong/can't speak.

Before Children I would have said I NEED 8 hours. Now I beg pitifully for a 4 hour stretches. Or 3, I would settle for 3. No? How about 2 hours sleep? Pleeeeeeease!

.... 5.5 years no fucking sleep here

Namejustfornappies · 14/01/2017 07:23

Oh and of course I wasn't going to be one of those weak people who's children don't sleep! No, a good routine is all they need! Grin

Ha. Ha ha ha ha ha ha

ForalltheSaints · 14/01/2017 07:24

I am like the OP in that I function much less if I have not had a proper nights sleep.

Since catch up tv came along I do not stay up for any tv programme which I find helps.

Lilaclily · 14/01/2017 07:31

This thread scares me, I'm going back to work full time and I've no idea how I'll cope with the little sleep I get, the responsibility of the new job, the early mornings getting dcs to childcare and me to work on time, Arrgghhh, hides under duvet Wink

Lilaclily · 14/01/2017 07:31

I already go to bed at 10pm, no chance of catching up at weekends with dcs !

cherrytime · 14/01/2017 07:37

I haven't had more than 5 hours uninterrupted sleep in over a year, I'm kind of used to it now but I have caught a lot more illnesses this winter so I wonder if it's affecting my immune system.
