To take a big pushchair on an airplane?

I have a Mama's and Papa's zoom- am I mad to take this on a flight? DS will be 9 months old when we go. Have plenty of adult help with carrying things, but am worried about how big and heavy it is.

Should I buy an umbrella stroller instead? I prefer the zoom as it has a big hood to keep sun off and also have a parasol to go with it- it is pretty big though!

Yes it does matter. But if you are an American I'll let you off.

PixieMiss · 13/01/2017 17:46

OP take a look at the new Baby Jogger City Tour. I have just bought it and its great!

LoupGarou · 13/01/2017 17:52

Well I live in North America for thank you for adding to my enjoyment at reading your thread Alive. Grin
No, it doesn't matter, not in the grand scheme of things. So long as people know what you mean why pick holes? For all anyone knows a poster could be dyslexic or other. DH is very severely dyslexic and is a member of an online forum, where, fortunately people are more gracious when he makes mistakes.

Oh no Pixie.... now what have you done! I need it.... but was hoping to pick something il second hand for less than £100. Being new I doubt I will find one, but now you have shown me, I must have it!

Sorry, I'm just going to make it worse. I just bought the city tour too, only had it a few days but I'm really pleased so far.

Aliveinwanderland · 13/01/2017 18:19

Oh no! What are you doing to me!

I don't need it until July and so can hold out and see if anyone has got fed up of it by then and is selling on. So far there are none for sale second hand that I can find!

We went through a whole bunch of buggies before we got the silvercross pop, it's fantastic, huge hood, great ventilation, sturdy and lays flat. It has now replaced our uppababy vista.

Aliveinwanderland · 13/01/2017 18:20

Downside I guess is it I take it on the plane it counts as my hand luggage- whereas if I wheel it up to the gate then add it to the hold I can take another bag as my hand luggage. Otherwise how do you manage with nappies etc as baby doesn't get their own hand luggage allowance.

When we've travelled (BA and Lufthansa) you get an extra piece of handluggage for infants, as well as an extra piece of checked baggage. They vary in whether or not you can have both a car seat and a pram as well or only one so it's worth checking that if you were planning on bringing both.

If you do go back to going for the BJCM it fits in the Ikea Dimpa bag, which costs 2.95 and zips up around the pushchair www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/small-storage-organisers/waste-sorting-bins/dimpa-storage-bag-transparent-art-10056770/ .

Aliveinwanderland · 13/01/2017 19:08

Fab tip about the bag thanks!

We are flying budget so no frills. Adults allowed hand luggage but not for baby. Baby can have 10kg of hold baggage. My hand luggage will be the changing bag with milk etc for flight.

I have one of these for travelling, it's really light (can carry easily 1 handed) folds small and has a big canopy for shade etc.

Check what your airline allows but easyJet for example allows you to take travel systems. We took an umbrella stroller for DS when we first took him abroad (at about 21 months) but I was surprised by how many people seemed to take their big travel systems. You wouldn't be alone!

Lalunya85 · 13/01/2017 19:17

(sorry no time to read full thread)

I have taken my city select double buggy (its massive and folds into three pieces) onto the plane with my then two year old toddler and 6 months old baby. Just me, no other adult help. We managed just fine to get on and off the plane! Including suitcase and three pieces of hand luggage.

Don't worry about it, it's totally doable. You don't need a stroller just for that.

emma6776 · 13/01/2017 19:22

When DD was in a buggy we always took our bugaboo chameleon everywhere - we were never asked to check it in - we always just left it at the side of the plane just before we boarded and collected it as we go t off the plane - so had it throughout the airport. Does that not happen now? We did that with at least 5 airlines

Artandco · 13/01/2017 19:58

I always checked the bugaboo chameleon in in buggy bag. That way I could fill pram space with stuff also ie nappies that take up space but actually help protect pram from knocks

WeSailTonightForSingapore · 13/01/2017 21:35

I took a Mamas and Papas Sola on several flights over the three years that DS was using it. Each time (transatlantic, budget, connecting flights...all sorts), we had the pram with us until the aircraft door, and got it back at the end of the flight. Was so great to have on hand when we had long stopovers and DS would sleep in the pram as we pushed it around the airport.

We did once fly with a relatively cheap umbrella stroller instead, but found on arrival that, compared to the Sola, the stroller was sooooo difficult to push and manouver, especially one handed, so that became a major source of annoyance!

I found the Sola virtually indestructable, despite the bandying about on flights and overloading it with shopping every week! Had absolutely no problems after it had been on flights (pretty sure it got chucked around).

Pippa12 · 13/01/2017 22:04

I took my pram on a jet2 flight. When I collected my buggy the wheels were missing 🙈 jet2 took ages to deal with the claim, eventually offering £100 for my pram- hundreds of £ less than I'd paid for it but because my receipt showed the pram was a couple of years old that's all they would pay out. However, had outstanding customer care from pram manufacturer who sent out replacement wheels free of charge. Celebrations quickly halted when it became apparent the wheels had been
'Ripped/prized' off causing the pram to constantly pull to the left. Never took more
Than a cheap buggy since.
