They are picking up school children and vulnerable people. Shouldn't they be checked?

They comment to each other.

A little bit victim blamey

Eh Hmm no one has implied anything like that age all.

mum2Bomg · 11/01/2017 06:52

I'd report him.

itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 06:52

"Locker room banter"

OP posts:
itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 06:53

No, the driver's comments were victim blaming.

OP posts:
itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 06:55

Who do I report him to? With no evidence. Plus, it's not just him. It's just a general culture and attitude that I've heard over the years.

OP posts:
SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 11/01/2017 06:57

Are you actually on a bus when you hear the comments or are you at the bus depot?

Are the comments being made to the children directly?

I can't imagine with a bus full of school kids in a morning that you'd hear much from the driver even if he were shouting.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 11/01/2017 06:58

Not sure what you want posters to say. Or where you are that you hear all if these comments.

It isn't a 'general culture' that I have heard amongst bus drivers and it is unfair to label it as such.

RoseGoldHippie · 11/01/2017 06:58

If your working in a school it would worry me if the culture has become that.

BoomBoomsCousin · 11/01/2017 07:00

Ahh. I take it you work with them then? Report to their managers, or HR. You're a witness, that's evidence. Though I get, if you work there, why you might be reluctant, and feel your word will be disregarded, that's a hard position. Are there others that overhear and may agree with you that it's not on? Would they support you?

emmab250 · 11/01/2017 07:00

The school? The bus company? I'd definitely report it. But I've never once heard a bus driver commenting on a passengers looks, girl, woman or otherwise. If this is banter amongst drivers themselves it's obviously not on the bus? Where do you hear these things?

itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 07:01

It's in the break room, or smoking area, or bus stops, or on the bus, or at the bus depot. I've heard it in all these places over the years.

OP posts:
itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 07:02

I have heard of comments being made directly to school children, but I have never personally witnessed that.

OP posts:
itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 07:07

I mean they don't shout it out in public or anything, or I've not seen that. They know that it's wrong, but they think that it's funny or whatever.

OP posts:
Chloe84 · 11/01/2017 07:07

Why are you on the school bus? Or near so many school bus drivers? Are you a teacher?

allchattedout · 11/01/2017 07:08

Making comments about secondary schoolgirls (some of whom will be over the age of 16) does not suggest that these bus drivers are likely to have anything in their backgrounds that would show up on a DBS check. They aren't pedophiles, they are just crude arseholes. Sadly, I have heard similar male banter from professions that ARE DBS checked. It means nothing.

itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 07:09

I doubt any one at the bus depot would support me. Like I say, I call it out when I hear it going on, but I end up against half a dozen sometimes.

OP posts:
itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 07:13

No I'm not a teacher.

I thought that even a 16 year old school girl was still a child legally? I know that's legally the age of consent, but I still think that it's pretty fucked up for 50 year old bus drivers to be perving over them. The bus drivers don't care how old they are, as school girls "look older these days", so that makes it ok then.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 11/01/2017 07:14

DBS checks, judiciously applied, will make some difference, but not much and they won't weed out people who simply make "Donald Trump"-esq comments. The way to stop those people is to complain about them to their employer

This.

You want to put in place checks that would not weed out arseholes but are not prepared to complain to someone that might actually make a difference.

itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 07:15

The fact that they're in school uniform, going to school should be a clue that they're not there to be perved over.

OP posts:
itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 07:18

Who's going to make a difference? I could report it to the school, and say Hey, some older male bus drivers make pervy comments and are arseholes, yeah and..... As others have said, they haven't actually done anything illegal. It just makes me uncomfortable, I thought that they should be checked, but it turns out that would do fuck all to help.

OP posts:
allchattedout · 11/01/2017 07:21

No, she could have sex with a 50 year old man and the law would not care (unless he was in a position of trust, which does not cover a bus driver but would cover a teacher). The age of consent is 16. I agree that these men are gross but you are kidding yourself if you think professions that are DBS checked don't have aresholes like this making comments like this to their male colleagues.

itsallbollocks · 11/01/2017 07:23

You're right. Let's face it, it's not just bus drivers where I work. It goes on everywhere sadly. Arseholes every where.

OP posts:
NewNNfor2017 · 11/01/2017 07:24

Right - so these are comments made about passengers, including school children, by bus drivers while they are on breaks and chatting with colleagues that you hear in non-public areas?

Yes, I'd report repeat offenders to their/your employers.
If you are there In the course of your job - even if you work for a different employer - you have a right to certain protections in the workplace.

And I'm shocked that the local authorities that have contracted that company to run the school transport service don't require the company to provide DBS checked drivers. A lone bus driver is considered a regulated activity.

The two issues aren't linked though.
