To suspect I don't need to be back here in A&E again...

For the kind folk who assisted with my last thread, no I'm not back with my dad after the weekend's dramas, instead I'm here with ds1 (14) who shut his finger in a door at 10pm.

I told the operator he had pins&kneedles in the finger and they sent me here. He says the pins&needles is fading.

I'd be grateful for any insights or advice. I feel silly being here.

The problem with something like a trapped finger and the like is unless you can see it properly and have some gentle manipulation you can't really know what it is likely to be.
its also a case of not wanting any long lasting nerve damage so people tend to air on the side of caution.

madcatwoman61 · 10/01/2017 23:49

If he can move it, feel it properly and it's the right shape, they will probably not x-ray it and there will be no treatment - go home

PovertyPain · 10/01/2017 23:50

OP, if you do go home, please inform the staff at the desk, so they can take you off the list.

Foxysoxy01 · 10/01/2017 23:51

Just read your update, I would stay now I was there and get it looked at by the DR.

PointlessUsername · 10/01/2017 23:56

You are there anyway, may aswell have it looked it. Could wake up tomorrow and it feels worse so would need to go back again.

Younger fingers are better at getting squashed without actually breaking. To be honest even if it is broken, will probs just be strapped to the neighbouring finger to immobilise it. You could do this yourself with a bit of tape ( not too tight) I'd head home.
Sounds like he trapped/ bruised a nerve and or temporarily interrupted the circulation. That would explain the weird, numb feeling

My husband caught his finger in the front door. Because it was caught at the the nail bed I suggested it would be worth getting checked. (His finger was bleeding a bit too where the skin was cut). He phoned 111, who suggested that he went along to have it checked. He insisted on driving himself and was adamant it was a waste of time. Turns out he had an open fracture, and had to see a specialist. Luckily he didn't need surgery but he did get serious level painkillers, antibiotics, a splint, physio referral and a few weeks off work as he had to have his hand strapped to his chest. The adrenaline seemed to carry him through the 20min drive to a&e!

Update, I really appreciated your support last night.

We are back home and I can hear him playing the piano.....it feels weird but is moving and sensing normally.

I told them at the desk.

Glad he is ok.

PovertyPain · 11/01/2017 17:46

That's great and I'm sure they appreciated you telling them. Glad he's ok.

Good news x

Please don't try and treat broken fingers at home. You would have no idea what sort of break it is and could cause further damage.

Maybe mumsnet is a part of the solution to the A&E overcrowding problem.
It's like a crowd sourced triage:)
