My dog has hurt his paw Sad. I can't see anything immediately wrong with it but its clearly hurting him.

He's not insured. If I take out insurance today can I claim straight away?

What if you can't afford it without insurance ? Which it sounds like you can't. Do you just let the poor dog suffer ? Hmm
Its basic dog ownership to get them neutered microchipped and insured as soon as you get them

ATailofTwoKitties · 10/01/2017 12:09

Some household policies include third-party insurance and cover damage from pets, so possibly you wouldn't need separate cover, Wolfiefan, but you would need to check!

TweedAddict · 10/01/2017 12:09

Insurance won't cover it.

As for what you are saying it could be anything, from something in his paw or he may of pulled something, keep checking for infection in the mean time. I wouldn't do anything else apart from keep it clean and tape it up for trips to the loo, but take it off as soon as back in inside. Other then take leave it alone. If he's weight bearing and is just sore I'd leave it 2/3 days with rest and see how he is. No need to rush to the vets if nothing is showing.

I'm not a vet but do come from a family of them and that's the advise they would give you first off.

Just keep an out for infection that's the main thing, keep checking the paw but don't fiddle and check his temp.

SoupDragon · 10/01/2017 12:09

Why wasn't your dog insured when you got him ? It's basic pet care to ensure they are insured

Don't be ridiculous. SoupDogg is not insured. I made a conscious choice not to insure him and to take the hit of any vet bills (which I can pay).

How, exactly, is that lacking in care?

HermioneJeanGranger · 10/01/2017 12:09

If you won't pay insurance, you shouldn't have a pet! Don't leave the poor thing to suffer!

Grindelwaldswand · 10/01/2017 12:10

No my pup was a fully paid up member it was cheap because she was fit as a flea and young

LexieLulu · 10/01/2017 12:10

Pet insurance is expensive as the dog gets older, every year it increases 10%, in the end for our dog they wanted over a thousand pound a year for insurance, plus £100 excess. We decided to cancel the insurance. It saved us money and if anything bad happened to our dog we would pay out of our savings or on a credit card.

Just cause you don't have insurance does not mean you don't care!

TweedAddict · 10/01/2017 12:10

If he stops weight bearing- straight to vets mind

Grindelwaldswand · 10/01/2017 12:11

Thank you Hermione im not loosing my marbles Grin can't stand irresponsible pet owner's

Swerab · 10/01/2017 12:11

oh don't be ridiculous. I haven't insured them for three years. They are amazingly happy healhty dogs. If I have to take them to the vet, I pay. The vets still take them if they are not insured you do realise??

Thank you. That's what I was planning to do. I have taken his temp (I do it for my horses too!) and its fine.

*can't stand irresponsible pet owner's

and I can't stand stupid people so that makes us even.

If he is still sore after a couple of days, or if it gets worse, I will take him to the vet. They will allow me through the door if I am not insured, although their eyes do dim a little when they realise they can't slap all the top price treatments on.

It can be £30. They increase it with age. My 9 year old spaniel cost this and at that time didn't have any ongoing issues.

Deadnettle · 10/01/2017 12:14

Grindelwaldswand my dog costs just under £30 per month with petplan and has since the day we got her at 10 weeks. Previous dog cost £28 per month with petplan.

I have never heard of a decent insurance policy costing less than £20 per month and am amazed that you have. Can I ask what breed you have?

3luckystars · 10/01/2017 12:15

On the supervet he cleaned the dogs paw with toothpaste and a toothbrush and the dog had a corn. It was amazing, they had spent loads on X-rays before going to see him!
It cost £2!

Anyway, I hope you get sorted and dump the toothbrush if you do this. I'm just saying! Get well soon to your dog.

Swerab · 10/01/2017 12:17

yes mine cost £40 for two with John Lewis from the first year we got them.

I think its cheaper if you just get accident insurance. How irresponsible Wink

No, if you won't pay vet bills you shouldn't have a pet.

Paying money to line the pockets of an insurance company does not make you a responsible pet owner.

gobbynorthernbird · 10/01/2017 12:22

My dog isn't insured because of her age. It wasn't cost effective. Or, to be blunt, if she ends up needing treatment that costs more than the policy and excess would it'd be kinder to have her PTS.

Barefootcontessa84 · 10/01/2017 12:22

Yep unfortunately they will need a 2 week period following start of policy before a claim is made - plus it would also be dishonest to take out insurance with pre-existing knowledge of an issue.

DancingDragon · 10/01/2017 12:22

Mines about £30 a month with pet plan. Its not cheap. But its also not irresponsible to not have insurance if people can afford the vet bills. Obviously,

Swerab · 10/01/2017 12:23

You defraud insurance at your peril. If you get caught ALL insurance companies can withdraw cover: car, home, buildings, life. They have a VERY good linked up system to track and stop fraudsters.

Frankly, you'd be mad.

Oh and some companies use voice tracking and lie detection systems on their claims lines. ..

I work closely with insurance companies. I would not do it.

PersianCatLady · 10/01/2017 12:27

Also, I can't see anything so I don't see how the vet will be able to either
I would have though that a vet may have techniques for finding out if there is something in the paw that are more accurate than just looking.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 10/01/2017 12:27

Op have you tried different comparison sites for per insurance? I got my through compare the market and change it each year to keep the costs down. But I don't have back up savings so for me if I didn't have insurance and something happened I would think be able to pay.
