To think that 7 is way too young for an iphone and unrestricted app/internet access?

My 7-year-old went on playdate recently and quite frankly I was expecting her to come home and tell me she'd played with friend's dolls, watched a movie, had dinner..but no. They spent most of the time "playing" on friend's iphone browsing youtube (including videos with "people saying rude words") and using apps that are designed for teens where they upload videos of themselves singing. I've heard about these apps recently from parents who found their young child being groomed by an older man. There's also easy access to porn within the app. Am I just not down with the kids? Is this normal entertainment for 7-year-olds?

If you're not down with the kids then neither ami I, that is not age appropriate. iPhone for a 7 year old?! When did that start?!

No advice how to deal with this, sorry not helpful Hmm

YANBU totally irresponsible for a seven year old to have a mobile. Too many risks of undesirable people contacting them and convincing them to share things like photos etc.

DJBaggySmalls · 09/01/2017 23:37

Shriek! YANBU!

MimiTheWonderGoat · 09/01/2017 23:38

Well, I don't think it's normal and our kids don't get any unsupervised internet access, but I don't understand why these parents allow it (and other things I won't go into). There must be other parents who do think it's ok, and I'd love to know why. The internet can be so dangerous. Getting hooked at 7 with parental blessing is just bizarre!

userformallyknownasuser1475360 my daughter actually said her friend received a call via the app asking if they wanted to "broadcast" some videos of themselves. Seeing how irate we were she changed her story a few times, but she will most definitely not be returning for another playdate. Thing is, how are we as parents supposed to know if her new friends have access to things like this at home without interrogating the parents first?

What music app is that please OP? Easy access to porn how? I'm concerned - my DD and all her friends have that app but profiles set to private

MimiTheWonderGoat · 10/01/2017 00:14

I've read there is a way to set profile to private but I don't think you can delete anything you upload even if you delete an account. Also privacy settings don't block adult content.

Ahh shit. That's the one. Thanks OP. Will delete it from her phone.

MimiTheWonderGoat · 10/01/2017 00:34

There was another similar app they were using as well but my daughter can't remember the name. They seem to be aimed at young teens but they just don't seem very safe at all.

TheGrumpySquirrel Do a search for xhamster or pornhub - both sites talked about openly on social media, both which are designed to show pornography.

Most of teenagers talking now is done over the internet, the issue is there is social status in the number of "friends" you have online, the issue is you don't know who these "friends" are.

specialsubject · 10/01/2017 11:10

Stupid parents there. They have left the.kids unattended in a porn shop complete with the worst customers.

Tell the parents, and have the playdates at yours , with toys not internet access.

Ilovecaindingle · 10/01/2017 11:16

Tell the parents. Maybe they are not technical and have no clue how easy it is to access such things!!

manhowdy · 10/01/2017 11:22

Are you sure it wasn't just an ipod touch? My 7 year old has one and is always telling friends it's an iPhone by mistake.....like I would buy her a phone, let alone a £700 one.

HearTheThunderRoar · 10/01/2017 11:57

Yanbu

Do you know the Mum/dad well enough to let them know what apps their child is using, they possibly aren't aware. TBH until then i probably wouldn't send your child their for a playmate until you know it's a safe environment.

I was rather shocked when my colleague said her 2yo had an iPhone. I know it's not my place to judge and it's a different time from when my dd was that age but i was still a bit Hmm

SarcasmMode · 10/01/2017 11:57

I'm 26 so not old but no way should a 7 year old have unsupervised access to an iPhone.

Borrow it to take pictures or something sure but not a chance in hell is let them browse the Internet and use Snapchat (I'm guessing by description it was Snapchat).

I'd let this level at about 13, not 7!

Some parents are really clueless.

abigfuckinghohoho · 10/01/2017 13:48
