Last week my car died and I couldn't get to work. Even if I could have got there, I need the car to actually work (mobile job) do I ended up sat at home all morning in a flap, trying to get car sorted but also mortifyingly handing out my work to my colleagues. They covered me and I got in for the afternoon. So embarrassing and I'm sure some of them were sceptical of why I didn't turn up for work in the morning.

Well same thing has happened this morning. I can't just not turn up again. I can't hand my work to colleagues again. Shall I just call in sick??? I'm sat here in tears because it's just one thing after another.

Just to add I've handed my notice in and I have two weeks left. I'm worried that they think this is why I'm not bothering turning up for work.

Honesty 100%

Surely if your job depends on the car you either have to get a loan car from the garage, use taxis or rent one?

This is my situation. I have a back up plan that if it happened DH would use bus /taxi and I'd use his. Surely if you take a job on that requires a car you have a plan in your head ?

Using sick leave is a very poor plan. If you are caught out ( and you are going to have to walk to the shops or what ever I assume so will be seen about, you could loose your job. Also people like you are why really unwell people are terrified of taking time off.

If you really haven't a realistic back up plan then be honest and take un paid or annual leave

Be very careful if using a rented or borrowed car for work purposes- there is a strong chance most insurance policies won't cover you for this.

anotherdayanothersquabble · 09/01/2017 09:22

Be truthful. Your boss might have some ideas.

Thingvellir · 09/01/2017 09:25

Don't tell a lie about being sick! It is wrong and unneccessary. If they didnt believe you about genuine car trouble, I don't see how faking sickness will go down better. In your position I would tell the truth about the car, ask if they have any options of a spare you can use, and assuming not, spend the day getting it sorted.

Did the car work over the weekend and then break down again this morning?

3luckystars · 09/01/2017 09:44

People's cars break down, I'm sure it's happened to your collegues too. Tell the truth, it's not the end of the world, you just need to get your transport sorted. Talk to your manager and tell the truth, you are not a bad person, your car is just sick!!

throughgrittedteeth · 09/01/2017 09:56

I work for a company who employs health care professionals and this is a common occurrence. We have a spare car for people in this situation.
I would urge you to be honest and don't panic, car troubles happen to the best of us and we don't all have a credit card or money we can pull out of our magical arseholes to fix things. Please just tell them the truth, they might think that you're pulling a fast one before you leave, but who cares?! You know you're telling the truth and if they challenge you then you know they will have nothing to pull you up on. Come back and let us know whats happened though OP.

ZefStar · 09/01/2017 11:57

Ring work and see if there's a company car you can use, or maybe there's someone who can drive you round!

HateSummer · 09/01/2017 12:00

Well I hope you called in sick. Sort your car out.

yoowhoo · 09/01/2017 12:01

I wouldn't have called in sick in case someone sees you out and about sorting your car out. You can't go far wrong with the truth! It's not as if you purposely broke your car!

ilovesooty · 09/01/2017 12:23

I hope you've told your employer the truth and sorted a plan out. I can't believe that anyone seriously thinks faking sickness is a good idea.

FeralBeryl · 09/01/2017 12:34

OP I assume you've made a decision one way or another by now! I would be truthful - can you be buddies up with a colleague for now? Or could you afford to hire a small car for the remainder period of work?
Or - could work bring forward your finish date by a week so you only have the next 4 days to sort out?

BabychamSocialist · 09/01/2017 15:39

Yep, tell the truth, see what your boss says.
