to not want the dentist to remove a tooth so quickly on 6 year old DD?

Daughter of 6 hasn't lost any baby teeth so far and Friday I noticed that she had the start of an adult tooth coming up behind one of her bottom teeth
I had a dentist appt for myself Friday afternoon so mentioned it to the dentist who said to give it 10 days and then bring her in for him to remove
Is this really needed?
He mentioned that if by 7 no other baby teeth have fallen out, he recommends she goes into hospital to have every tooth removed under a general?!

My son had a baby tooth come out a couple of months ago, and he's just turned 15!

What the what!? My 6 yr old had front teeth at almost right angles with adult teeth coming through. They fell out naturally and he now has two straight teeth in thier place. Removal seems totally unnecessary. Your gut instinct seems right to me.

I'm really relieved reading this thread. DD2 is 6 and has an adult tooth growing through behind her baby teeth. DH is freaking about it

I'm 34 this month and still have 11 baby teeth... theybahve said they will take them out as my big teeth are ready to come thought... they are I can feel them hkwver theyvate not causing me any pain.

Ds1 is 10 and still has 4 baby teeth... ds2 is 7 and had to have 5 baby teeth taken away as they rotten due to a high soya diet (diary anaphylactic) however he has needed 6 teeth removed and will need further dental work and then braces when older.

I wish my DS lower teeth had come through behind the baby teeth. It would have saved me many visits to the orthodontist.
Lower teeth erupt into a much better position in relation to the top teeth they oppose if they come through behind the baby teeth. The tongue is such a powerful muscle it soon pushes them forward.
DS teeth were a standing joke in our family. Both Dsis and I are dentists and we watched with horror as he developed the worst mouth either of us had seen in 25yrs of practice.
So in answer to your question I would get a second opinion.

My children have had these a lot. They sort out in the end. DD3 did get a swollen gun with one of them, so the dentist gave her a three month deadline for the baby tooth to come out on its own.

I had six teeth taken out in one go when I was six years old, gave me a fear of dentists and I still find it stressful going, I'm 35... I remember afterwards as well, not nice, so I'd say no

That does not sound right - I would never return to a dentist who gave such ridiculous advice!

DD got her first tooth at 15 months and only lost her first tooth at age 8. She had 2?rowd of teeth at the bottom for months til the baby ones fell out - it's pretty common imo as I see it in other peoples kids frequently - my friends daughter is 9 and has this. Eventually the baby ones fall out and the adult ones move into position.

likewhatevs · 07/01/2017 23:27

No. No no no. She is just 6. When exactly does the dentist think baby teeth fall out? Ds2 is in year 2 and is one of the oldest (7) and has just lost his top front teeth. He lost his bottom two a couple of months back. Many of the 6 year olds in his year have not lost any teeth yet. His bottom adult teeth were completely through before his baby teeth fell out and the dentist advised against any intervention even though they were sticking out forwards. They have since completely righted themselves.

Have you seen the xrays? Ask to see them and then also take them to another dentist for a second opinion.

luciole15 · 07/01/2017 23:37

He's suggesting she gets teeth removed in hospital? Ask which one and contact them. Doubt they'd do it if her baby teeth are healthy.

I've just paid £900 for private dental work because my 3 months of persistent pain didn't meet the 'threshold' for specialist NHS treatment (even though my normal NHS dentist said there was nothing else she could do and she wouldn't feel comfortable extracting either)...

My point is- you'd never get an NHS hospital to take out all her (perfectly healthy) baby teeth at 7! That's madness. Your dentist must have been having a funny turn today...
