For the first time I can remember the people who control the variable speed limit have been on holiday. Thank fuck for that. Long may they stay on holiday. I got on the M25 at J21 and left at J15 and it took about 25 minutes, despite a hold up at the A41 junction caused entirely by the useless arses in control of the speed limit who lied that there was a queue on the slip road. There was no queue, they made us slow down for no reason. So for about a mile it was stop start which was entirely down to the idiots in charge of the system.

Driving past Heathrow at 65mph was amazing, usually something I only see at 11pm.

Indeed thay are very much of a bunch of plonkers....

But we have to pay their wages and inflated pensions so we must be grateful to them for all their -hard work- doing very little and getting paid.

I can't help but love the M25 as it means I'm nearing my wonderful parents. I live too far away

With variable speed limits in heavy traffic you get there quicker by driving slower. Otherwise it's stop-start (bad for the MPGs) and inexplicable traffic jams (which cause crashes).

Roads quieter this past week so no need fit the variable speed limits, but it's the lower level of traffic that's making your commute better, not the absence of speed restrictions.

Stop start traffic and crashes are caused by people not living the right gap for the speed ( so when people see brake lights, they brake harder and so on back up the lane of traffic). So it makes sense to drive slower with lots of traffic.
Those variable speed things are a bit shit though as half the drivers don't bother and the ones that do drive 40 or 50 in the wrong lane.
I love the M25 normally but I only use if off peak so I'm biased.

I drove up the M1 today and between j12 and13 they told me to stay below 40 because queue, caution but the hard shoulder was for emergency use only. I shook my head and drove at 70 as there was no traffic.

Fuck the variable speed limit. It is the cause of the problem, not the cure.

I drive the M25 at rush hour every day. It was quiet this past week. And YABU about the variable limits, they do help.
Don't get me started on the holiday drivers who don't know where they are going /have no lane discipline over the last 3 weeks..give me the regular drivers any day.

Variable speed limits should improve driving conditions. They definitely do decrease accidents. But because so many people are such bad drivers they don't improve traffic as much as they should.

Often the speed limits are temporarily added for the safety of emergency services workers. As someone who works in the emergency services and personally knows people who have died on the motorways after being hit by traffic, I am all for them.

DoctorTwo - your comment about shaking your head and deciding that you think you know better than Highways England absolutely disgusts me.

There is extensive research carried out into how to manage traffic, often using computer models. Computer models, however, tend to assume that humans follow rules. The models have had to be updated to include people like Doctor Two who seem to be too stupid to understand that the success of a larger plan depends on individuals co operating. It's very hard to account for people who put themselves and others in actual danger though - and there are a shockingly high number of those people on the roads.

So do I. And I have done for about 20 years, and I've noticed the traffic flows better when they leave us the fuck alone and don't back us up.

An example. Just before Xmas I had a delivery that took me from the A1M to the M4 and down to South Wales and back. On both journeys there was a 40mph limit. At 4pm the trip from j23 to j15 took 3 hours. At 11.0pm, with the same 40mph restriction, and "queue caution" warnings it took me about half an hour to do the reverse journey.

My point is: leave us the fuck alone unless there is a problem. We're not all stupid. You traffic causing cunts.

My only accident in over 20 years of driving was at walking pace. I got crashed into at Hyde Park Corner. Suspension broke and car written off. But the car only cost me £400. :o

As someone who has spent many an hour screaming and stuck between J18 and J23 on the M6, I can only imagine how bad the M25 is.

Don't even get me started on the Mancunian way (the only road where a sinkhole opening up actually improved traffic)

No. Not even a Transit Connect is that fast. J15 to 23 is about 24 miles, so I was under the 70 limit.
