AIBU to give away a plant given for Xmas?

I was given an orchid for Christmas by my MIL (this isn't a MIL bashing thread BTW). I don't like the responsibility of plants, I don't like them cluttering up the house (we have more than enough clutter!), and I don't actually like orchids.

So AIBU to give the plant away to someone who would look after it properly, and probably offend my MIL who will spot that it's gone? Or do I suck it up and live with it?

I too don't really like plants and am incredibly neglectful of them. But... I was given an orchid about 4 or 5 years ago and no matter what I do or don't do it keeps coming back to life. It always redirects itself just as I'm about to call it officially dead.

I've got a friend who likes to give plants instead of flowers. I love her but I hate the responsibility of plant ownership! Don't worry I don't have any animals, but I do have a dc!

Just a quick update - the orchid is absolutely blooming under my negligent care! My mum received one too and she says mine is doing much better than her's. She thinks I should keep it and stop over thinking it, so like a good daughter (and DIL) that's what I shall do.

Thanks all for your comments. My first AIBU and a very positive experience Smile

I don't like them. They are a cliché. (Sorry orchids...)

Glad you are keeping it though. It is a living thing, after all!
