To ask when is too young for a good skin regime?

This is to stop dry skin really. My 5 year old is prone to dry skin. I've put some coconut oil on her hands this morning and it totally absorbed in! It must be the cold and I've told her to make sure she wear gloves. It got me thinking about her lips (which are dry) so I put a bit of Vaseline on there and then she has patches of dry skin. So I know I need to help her put cream on her body. But what about face? Daily? Do your kids use anything? Or AIBU is 5 too young for a facial skin routine?

I use doublebase cream on one of my boys, probably about three times a week for dry patches, it's unscented so he doesn't protest too much!

WombattingFree · 06/01/2017 10:09

I guess if she has dry skin treat it. Coconut oil won't hurt her and I use it on my face. I get really dry and cracked skin on my hands in winter and just by using the oil on my face it stopped it, so now I use it everywhere. Maybe just use it once or twice a week rather than daily - she doesn't use a face wash I'm assuming so it may clog her pores. 5 is a bit young to go further than Vaseline and a bit of moisture for dry patches IMO Smile

If they have dry skin an unperfumed moisturising cream is fine IMO. I'm not sure what you're suggesting with 'facial skincare routine' though?

Sad
Softkitty2 · 06/01/2017 10:12

Coconut oil is comodegenic so I would be careful using it on her face or scalp. Try jojoba oil its the closest to human oil

Softkitty2 · 06/01/2017 10:13

Also try baby aveeno, cetaphil range

DailyFail1 · 06/01/2017 12:05

Mum had me cleanse tone and moisturize from 5. Cleansing with soap, toning by splashing cold water on my face afterwards, and moisurizing with a spf cream (nivea). Dd also does the same.

Strongmummy · 06/01/2017 12:07

Coconut oil didn't work for my son (who is 3) but I swear by aveeno. Totally changed his skin. We use it daily over his whole body

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 06/01/2017 12:12

Something like Oilatum Natural Repair Cream is great for very dry and sensitive skins. Aveeno also. If you have dry skin it can be very uncomfortable and needs looking after whether you're 5 or 95.

'Mum had me cleanse tone and moisturize from 5.'

^^ That however is bonkers.

dollydaydream114 · 06/01/2017 14:19

I had dry skin on my face as a child. My mum asked for advice and was told to get me to 'cleanse' with baby lotion and cotton wool rather than soap and water, and then just wipe a slightly damp flannel over my face to remove any traces.

If it was still dry after that I would suspect that any plain, bland moisturiser would do - a pharmacist would probably be able to recommend something.

I don't think 'facial skin routine' is really the way to describe it; we're talking about a tiny child so it's a case of treating the discomfort of dry skin when it's necessary, not creating a beauty-focused skincare routine that they have to stick to come hell or high water.

Thanks I'll perhaps speak to HV (I have a toddler and have contact) I don't know what comodegenic so I'll look that up.

What does comodegenic mean? I use it on DS's face and hair as I figure it can't hurt if he eats a bit (9 month old)

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 06/01/2017 15:07

Comodegenic means it can cause spots.

Rixera · 06/01/2017 15:08

Another vote for aveeno here too. My DD has mild but stubborn eczema and nothing else worked until I tried that. Within days it was significantly better.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/01/2017 15:13

Mum had me cleanse tone and moisturize from 5. Any boys in your family? Are they doing this?

specialsubject · 06/01/2017 15:16

if it makes her more comfortable, fine. Of course kids with eczema or other conditions need creams for treatment, and everyone needs sunscreen

but the general farting around with expensive tubes of goo with french names does nothing, and certainly doesn't prevent ageing. Although at five this is probably not a worry...

Camomila · 06/01/2017 15:17

Thanks :) I'll carry on then as we are all spot free.
