to go to sleep as soon as I get in from work

I don't work long hours 10am-4pm (temping at the moment looking for a permanent role). I don't really have any reason to be so tired, but the moment I get home from work, I sit on the sofa and nod off, waking about 3 hours later, I then get up have a drink get washed and in PJS and go back to bed until I wake at 7.30am

AIBU to think I shouldn't be sleeping at 4.30pm every day or is it part of getting old (I am 51)

Depends. Pre kids I'd have had myself a little snooze after work but only about 45 mins. Then I'd be up and about doing chores and making dinner and go back about 10pm.
You sound very very tired and that much sleep is a lot.

Could you get your bloods checked?

NapQueen · 06/01/2017 08:35

Oh hang on is your username true?

If so sleep as much as you want!!!

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 06/01/2017 08:35

You should probably get thyroid and B12 levels checked, this is excessive tiredness!

Stormwhale · 06/01/2017 08:36

It does sound like you need more sleep than you would expect. My mum is a similar age and she does not need to nap in the day time, and sleeps from 11pm to 7.30am. I wonder if you might be anaemic or some other issue?

Stormwhale · 06/01/2017 08:36

Oh unless you are pg or have a newborn that is!

BarbarianMum · 06/01/2017 08:37

If you really are pregnant I'd say totally normal, esp in the first trimester.

statetrooperstacey · 06/01/2017 08:38

I would go for a gp check up , however could it just be because it's winter? The cold and dark nights etc make me feel a bit hibernating bear like. You might feel more sprightly when the lighter evenings come back.

MLGs · 06/01/2017 08:39

As long as you don't have a sahp partner who is coping with small children during that time!

pregnantat50 · 06/01/2017 08:49

No, not pregnant, that was a scare, when I joined mumsnet, hence user name.

I think I will go to the GP, as this tiredness is overwhelming, I sit down and physically cant get up, next thing I know 3 hours have passed and I am waking from sleep.

My 21 year old daughter has narcolepsy but I haven't had issues with sleep until recently so don't think its connected. (she has been known to fall asleep on a water slide!)

I think I am menopausal, so maybe that's causing the tiredness..I will check it out though as it could be thyroid, I have gained a little weight too

I have a 10/15mins nap when I get in, then get up and sort kids/mark etc. That is a LOT of sleep, I would sort a GP's appointment.

JoeyJoeJoeJuniorShabadu · 06/01/2017 09:04

See your GP.

EssentialHummus · 06/01/2017 09:08

This sounds like thyroid issues to me.

Greyponcho · 06/01/2017 09:14

Whilst getting bloods done at GP for b12, folate, iron etc perhaps consider asking to be tested for coeliacs- being utterly exhausted tired is a typical symptom.

abigfuckinghohoho · 06/01/2017 09:17

I have a b12 deficiency (waiting for another injection atm) but when it's low like now I'm completely exhausted and can sleep constantly (I have 2 young dc no chance of that right enough Sad) definetly have your bloods checked x

Tenshidarkangel · 06/01/2017 09:18

I agree with PP. I have B12 deficiency and I could have a good nights sleep and wake feeling like I've just run two marathons. Go and get a blood test done.

CurlsandCurves · 06/01/2017 10:03

My friend was just as you describe and has been diagnosed with pernicious anaemia. She will now need b12 injections every 3 mths.

Definitely get your bloods checked.

WorraLiberty · 06/01/2017 10:08

When do you find time to eat?

Perhaps that's part of the cause?

Softkitty2 · 06/01/2017 10:10

Are you possibly anemic? Do you take multivits? Go to your gp, you shouldnt be that tired.

RegTheMonkey1 · 06/01/2017 10:12

Funnily enough OP, I'm just back from the GPs to get the results of some blood tests. I could sleep round the clock, everything is a chore, I go to bed at 10pm and get up at 6.30am and I work full time. So I'm out of the house from 8.30 until 6. All I want to do is lie on the sofa, or go to bed for a nap. Just exhausted all the time. So, the blood tests came back and it's all a bit of a mystery, thyroid fine, blood iron fine, cholesterol a bit high. She did ask if I snored? And I said yes, I was a snorer, so she started to question the quality of sleep I was getting - something to think about? So I'm none the wiser about my tiredness but have got to lose weight, lower my cholesterol and take more exercise.

pregnantat50 · 10/02/2017 19:18

underactive thyroid was to blame
